Chapter 9: Let's play the detectives

With the influence of Reaver class, skill "Dragon Claws" has been changed into "Phantom Claws".

Phantom Claws - Demonic claws made from pure energy surrounds your hands and are used to shred your enemies into pieces. Uses 70 mana/min to sustain.

With the influence of Reaver class, special skill "Devour Mana" learned.

Devour Mana - Absorb mana from your opponent. During the process of consuming mana, the opponent can't use any mana based skills or spells. If all mana is consumed, the opponent loses consciousness.

Skill "Unknown Martial Arts" learned.

Unknown Martial Arts reached level 2.

Mana Manipulation reached level 2.

Mana Perception reached level 3.

For a moment I have lost my skill 'Dragon Claws'... but only for a moment. I created it once so there was nothing to stop me from doing it again, and in the end, I now had 'Dragon Claws' and 'Phantom Claws' in my arsenal.

With my current mama pool 70 mana per minute might sound harsh... but in reality, if I choose so I could fight for almost half day. Only an idiot would keep this active all the time to fight barely five minutes. If activated just for a split second when it's needed, mana is no longer an issue.

"Nice, I am Kitty with class." I smiled as I looked at previously empty spot in my status. I am not elegant, nor have nice clothes, but even the system knows that I am someone with style.

"Reaver? Hmm, never heard of it." Reveon said while climbing down the tree with a rope and I was a bit disappointed he missed double meaning of my words.

After he reached the ground, the rope he used has immediately vanished. This Space-Time Magic is cheating! Just like that, I lost my chance to carry him down.

But all jokes aside the magic is really a cheat. Let's take his shooting with a bow for example. After shooting one arrow he was summoning another right into his hand, ready for the next shoot. Even an average accuracy could be compensated when this quantity of arrows was released.

After retrieving salvageable arrows and corpses of the wolves, we continued our journey to the village.

"We are not skinning them?" I asked as we started to walk.

"You know how to do that without damaging the quality of a pelt?" asked Reveon in return.

"No." I lived in the city, how the hell I could know something like that.

"Well me neither. It also takes a lot of time. Kilmor does it quick and cheap, so why even bother" replied Reveon.

The Luhton Village was a large farming village.

We walked past the fields for almost a half hour before even reached the part with the buildings. Most of the villagers we meet on the way were either humans, some fox beastkin or dryads. After asking around we got directions where we can find the families of missing women.

First, we meet with a human that was the father of one missing girls. He said that his daughter Liza went missing three days ago, after she went to gather some medicinal herbs. Later they searched with the help of other villagers, but came empty handed.

When I asked if they have something I could use to get her scent, mother who just reached our group quickly ran away and then came back with a tunic. Apparently, Liza changed from it at the morning of her disappearance and she still hasn't washed it. I sniffed to memorized the scent and then asked where she was supposed to gather herbs.

After they answered we left.

Our next stop was Albert, brother of another missing woman. When his sister Tia hasn't returned from the fields she was working at, at first, he thought she was fooling around with some boys again. But it was a mistake... she is still missing for a week now. When asked for something to get her scent he led us to her room where I got what I came for from a pile of her clothes. With the scent of both women memorized we left to start the actual search.

First, we decided to search for Liza, as she was missing only for three days, and had better chances of still being alive. Although my personal opinion was that both of them were already dead.

We entered the forest and reached the place where Liza was supposed to gather herbs. After some wandering, I eventually picked her scent... after three days the scent was weaker, but still there.

"Hmm, I think she was kidnaped..." I said while observing the surroundings, "She climbed that tree over there, but then fell down. Probably was knocked down with a stone. Creatures of a race I don't recognize, have captured her then and dragged in that direction." I pointed to the direction scent was leading to and looked around for more clues of what happened. "She was still alive."

"If she was still alive then there is hope," Reveon said while facing in the direction I pointed.

As we followed the scent, I came to the conclusion that there were three kidnappers in total and after a bit further, we even found a patch ground not covered by the moss. From the footsteps that were visible even after all this time, I could see that the kidnappers were small creatures walking on two feet.

"Goblins!" Reveon frowned when saw the footprints, "This is bad."

"Why? Aren't goblins weak?" small, weak and ugly, that's basically all I knew about them.

"Individually yes, but not as a group," Reveon replied while looking into the distance, "They are capable of using tools and it would be very troublesome if they have many archers. Depending on their numbers we might have to withdraw and call for help."

I tried to imagine the number that could give me trouble, but as long as I have the stamina even hundreds of weaklings shouldn't be a problem... my gaze then shifted to Reveon... or if I was alone.

After a few more hours, we reached an entrance to a cave.

"The other missing woman was brought through here as well," I said after sniffing around, "Although she was brought almost a week ago."

"She is probably pregnant by now," Reveon said while looking at the cave entrance.

"Pregnant?" I asked with disgust.

"Yes, there are no female goblins and they use captured women for breeding," he replied, "We can't allow for even a single goblin to escape or the same will happen somewhere else. If we can't take all of them at once, we should return to the Guild to get help."

I felt silent and with the help of enhanced hearing and smell, tried to determine their numbers. As I did so, I realized that a few more women were dragged through here, probably from another village.

"There is more than twenty of them inside, but it's not more than thirty,"  I said after a while, "There is also someone whose smell I don't recognize."

"Probably a hobgoblin. Same roots but it's a different race. Anyhow this is too much for two us, we should report to the guild." Reveon started to speak while facing me.

"Come on, it's only goblins. If we bait them to fight at the entrance, it will be easy. You could shoot them from the side, while I prevent them from leaving confines of the entrance." I quickly suggested. "It's like fishing in a barrel."

"You realize it's a job for at least six people? I know you are confident in your skills, but even at the entrance, you would face five or more of them at once. And let's not forget about archers." Reveon tried to dissuade me.

"Don't worry Master. It's me we are talking about. What can go..." I stopped mid-sentence and looked into the sky with a bit of dread.

No signs of meteors or thunderclouds approaching. That was close. I almost voiced that doom-spelling phrase.

"Anyway five, twenty or thirty. As long as they are attacking from one direction, It makes no difference how many do that." I said with a grin.

*Sigh* "Fine... I hope I won't regret this." Master gave in.

I left Reveon outside the cave and then went inside. For the plan to work had to lure the goblins into following me... and I found a group of five goblins less than half a minute after I went inside. Just like I expected they were small like kids, and very ugly. Two had little bows, while others were holding a club, short sword, and a short spear.

"Hey look, look, a new female." I was noticed by one of them.

"Ohhhhh! Looks nice. Will make many babies for Teg." shouted excitedly another.

"Stupid! She will make babies for Fil! It's my turn now." started to argue the first.

I rushed in and before they could react, decapitated two of them with my phantom claws.

Phantom claws were oversized ghostly demonic hands with claws. A blue transparent hand, about 30 cm in diameter, it started from an elbow and was one and a half meter long, ending with giant claws. If I lowered them, could easily reach the ground with them.

Buying a sword was a mistake. With claws like these, there was absolutely no need for a weapon.

The goblins I killed were archers. After I let my phantom claws to dissipate I provoked the others to attack me with a finger. The goblin with a short sword swung his blade at me, but I redirected his blade by hitting the flat side of the sword with my hand. After that, I summoned my phantom claws again and crushed his now completely exposed body into meat paste. If he had armor, it might be hard to pull it off, but all he had was a loincloth and a weapon.

"Boo!" I scared the rest of them into fleeing.

Both of them ran deeper into the cavern while screaming. So far so good. I needed them to call the rest of the goblins so we can deal with all at once. I choose a bit more flashy way of killing so they take me seriously and attack with all they have. Well, maybe part of the reason. This demonic look when I used phantom claws got me excited.

I returned back to the entrance and after checking if Reveon was out of the sight for possible archers, started to wait for goblins. The fun part was about to begin.
