Elara stood alone in the small, dimly lit cottage, the dying embers of the hearth casting faint shadows on the walls. Her father's chair, made of sturdy oak and worn smooth from years of use, sat empty by the fire. She couldn't bring herself to sit in it, nor touch the carved armrests that he had gripped so often, his knuckles white from the strain of hard labour. She stared at the chair, willing him to return.
Two days had passed since he had been taken. The lord’s men had come, their armour clinking and their faces stern, demanding more men for the levy. Elara’s father, Edric, had stood tall despite the fear in his eyes, kissed her on the forehead, and promised he’d be back soon. But that promise felt like dust on her lips now. She had heard the distant sounds of battle in the morning — the clang of iron, the cries of men. By midday, a thick mist had rolled in, swallowing the village in a grey, suffocating gloom. Since then, nothing. Only silence.
Elara sat by the fire, clutching the wooden pendant that hung around her neck — a small carving of a stag, smooth and polished from years of being handled. Her father had given it to her on her tenth birthday, saying it was a token of their family’s strength. She had always felt a strange warmth from it, a comfort in times of worry or fear. But now, as she held it tight, she felt something different, something deeper… a faint pulse, like a heartbeat, thrumming against her palm.
She frowned, closing her eyes. For a moment, she thought she heard something — a distant whisper, a murmur carried on the wind. She strained to listen, but the sound faded, leaving only the crackle of the dying fire. Shaking her head, she dismissed it as the tricks of an anxious mind. She had been so worried, so tired.
The memory of her father before he left came to her then, as clearly as if he were still sitting by the hearth. It had been just three days ago, in the dim light of the early morning, before the soldiers arrived. Edric had sat on the bench outside, his hands moving with a quiet determination. He had his axe in his lap, a large woodsman’s tool with a broad, nicked blade that had seen years of hard use. The handle was split near the base, the wood worn and cracked.
Elara had watched him as he worked, carefully binding the split handle with a strip of leather, winding it tight and then tighter still. He muttered to himself as he worked, his face drawn with worry. “This old thing’s been with me longer than you, Elara,” he had said, glancing up at her with a small, weary smile. “But it’ll hold fast, just like me.”
She had seen him carve a small mark, a simple spiral pattern, into the leather binding with the tip of his knife, something he’d always done with his tools to make them his own. “In case it’s lost, they’ll know it’s mine,” he’d explained, though his eyes had told a different story — that he hoped it would be a mark she’d never have to recognise.
Now, sitting in the empty cottage, the memory of that morning felt like a distant dream. The knock at the door broke her reverie. She opened it to find Matron Bess, the village herbalist, her face lined with concern. “Ye look like ye’ve seen a ghost, child,” the old woman muttered, stepping inside. “I came to see how ye were holdin’ up.”
Elara forced a smile. “I’m fine, Bess. Just… waiting.”
The old woman’s sharp eyes darted to the pendant around Elara’s neck. “That’s a fine piece ye’ve got there. Yer father’s, aye?”
Elara nodded. “He gave it to me when I was a girl. Says it brings luck.”
Bess’s expression turned serious. “Aye, I’ve heard of such pendants before. Some say they’re carved from the heartwood of ancient trees, touched by spirits long forgotten. Keep it close, lass. Ye might need all the luck ye can get.”
Elara felt a shiver run down her spine but nodded. “I will, Bess. Thank you.”
After the herbalist left, Elara couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that had settled in her chest. She held the pendant again, feeling its warmth, and wondered what secrets it might hold. But she had no time for mysteries — not with her father still missing. That night, unable to sleep, she decided she could wait no longer.
---
Wrapped in her shawl, Elara slipped quietly out of the cottage and into the chill night air. The village was hushed, the mist thick and heavy, clinging to the ground like a living thing. She moved quickly, her footsteps silent on the damp earth, her breath coming out in small clouds. Her heart pounded in her chest, but she felt a strange resolve settling over her.
She knew the path her father and the other men had taken. As she walked, the mist seemed to swirl around her, twisting and turning like it had a will of its own. The wooden pendant grew warmer against her chest, a comforting heat in the cold night.
By dawn, the mist was so thick she could hardly see a few feet in front of her. But she kept moving, driven by a force she couldn’t name. And then, suddenly, she stumbled into the clearing — the battlefield. Her breath caught in her throat.
The ground was churned to mud, bodies lay scattered like broken dolls, armour dull and blood-streaked. The air was thick with the smell of smoke and death. She wanted to turn and run, but her feet stayed rooted to the spot. Somewhere among the dead and dying, her father could be waiting.
Elara moved carefully through the battlefield, whispering his name softly, afraid to raise her voice. Each step brought a new horror: men she recognised from the village, faces twisted in agony, hands clutching makeshift weapons or reaching out as if in prayer. She felt a sob rise in her throat but choked it back. She had to be strong. She had to find him.
As she searched, her fingers brushed the pendant, and again, she felt that strange pulse, stronger this time. Her heart quickened, and she closed her eyes, feeling a strange sensation coursing through her. When she opened her eyes again, she saw it — a faint glow, a shimmering thread of light leading her deeper into the mist. She followed it, hardly daring to breathe, until she reached a cluster of felled trees near the edge of the field.
There, half-buried beneath mud and broken branches, lay her father's axe. The handle was wrapped in leather, a spiral pattern carved into it just like the one she had seen him make. She knelt beside it, fingers trembling as she touched the cracked wood. Tears blurred her vision, and she whispered a prayer to whatever gods might be listening.
“Father,” she murmured, “where are you?”
The wind seemed to stir around her, and the mist swirled thicker. Then, from the corner of her eye, she saw movement. A wispy figure appeared, half-formed from the fog, a woman with eyes as bright as stars and hair flowing like silver. She spoke, her voice soft as a sigh.
“Ye’re seekin’ him, lass,” the woman whispered.
Elara's breath caught in her throat. “Please… do you know where he is?”
The figure’s gaze was filled with sorrow. “He’s beyond the veil now, child. But he fought with honour, like the stag he was. Ye must be brave, as he was.”
Elara's heart sank. “Will I… will I ever see him again?” she asked, her voice breaking.
The woman smiled gently. “Aye, in time, all paths cross again. But the path ye walk now is long and filled with shadow. Keep that pendant close. It holds more than just memory.”
And with that, the figure faded, dissolving back into the mist. Elara sat there for a long moment, clutching the pendant, feeling its warmth against her skin. She wiped her tears and stood, the wind whispering through the leaves.
---
Back in the village, Elara found herself restless, unable to sit still. The words of the spirit lingered in her mind, and Bess’s mention of the pendant being more than it seemed echoed in her thoughts. She felt an urgency, a call to action. As the day turned to night, she resolved to leave and seek out any rumours of captives being taken.
The next morning, before dawn had broken, she gathered what little provisions she had and prepared to leave. As she packed, Matron Bess came by, her eyes weary.
“Elara? Where are ye off to?” she asked, suspicion and worry clear in her tone.
“I have to find him, Bess. I heard… I heard that some men were taken captive. There might still be hope,” Elara replied.
Bess frowned, but her eyes softened. “Captured, aye? There are rumours of a stronghold to the north, past the mountains. A dark place, where men are taken for labour or ransom. But it’s dangerous, child.”
“I know,” Elara said, her voice firm. “But I have to try.”
Bess sighed
and handed her a small bundle of herbs. “Then ye should speak to the hermit, the one at the edge of the Wyrmwood. He knows things… sees things others don’t. He might guide ye.”
Elara nodded, her resolve firm. “Thank you, Bess. I’ll find him.”
---
She set out again, this time heading towards the Wyrmwood. The forest was dark and twisted, the trees bending as if whispering secrets to one another. After hours of trudging through tangled roots and narrow paths, she finally came upon a small clearing. In its centre stood a crumbling stone hut, smoke rising from a crooked chimney. Elara approached, her heart hammering.
“Who comes to my door?” a voice called out, gravelly and suspicious.
Elara took a deep breath. “I am Elara, daughter of Edric. I seek the way to the northern stronghold, where men are taken captive.”
The door creaked open, and a grey-bearded man peered out with sharp, searching eyes. “A dangerous quest for a young lass,” he muttered, his gaze lingering on the pendant around her neck. “But come in, and I’ll tell ye what I know.”
Inside, the hut was cluttered with strange trinkets and herbs. The hermit gestured for her to sit by the fire. “The stronghold ye seek is real, aye, but guarded by more than men. Dark magic clings to it like mist on the water. Those who go often don’t return.”
Elara’s determination did not falter. “I have to find my father.”
The old man studied her face, then nodded. “Follow the river north, past the falls, through the Black Fen. It’s a dangerous road, but the quickest way. If luck is with ye, ye’ll reach the mountains by the next moon.”
Elara nodded, thanking him and rising to leave. As she turned to go, a sudden gust of wind swept through the hut, stirring the fire into a sudden blaze. She clutched the pendant instinctively, feeling its warmth flare against her skin.
And then, without warning, the world around her shifted. The forest blurred, and she saw visions: dark walls, iron bars, men in chains. The pendant grew hot, and her heart pounded as the images flooded her mind.
She gasped and stumbled back, her eyes wide with shock. The hermit stared at her, awe and fear mingling in his gaze. “So… it’s awakened,” he whispered.
Elara stood there, panting, the pendant pulsing like a heartbeat in her hand. She realised now — it was more than just a memento. It was a guide, a source of power. And she would need it for the road ahead.
