Chapter 12 The merits of a good spell side-effect

“Pretty kitty kitty.” I said in an attempt at a soothing tone, despite my voice shaking horribly.

The kitty stopped for a moment with what appeared to be a puzzled expression on its face. I don’t know how that’s even possible. I could’ve just been projecting though. Unfortunately it didn’t seem to stop it for long as it began to slowly prowl towards me once more with that weird hissing growl it did. It looked like a large cat, somewhat resembling a panther, only massive. Although most things are huge compared to me. At first I couldn’t see why it would be considered undead but the closer I looked the more I noticed, funny how that works. When it crouched to pounce, I could see a part of its rib cage just open to the air with no skin covering it and one front paw was just bones and claws. I realised that it was about to pounce just moments before it did and I jumped sideways with a small amount of assistance from my wings just in time to avoid it. I tripped as I landed and fell over onto my back, just narrowly avoiding a swing of it’s giant claw filled paw. The wind kicked up from its paw swing moved me back slightly and it gave me an idea.

I quickly hopped to my feet and aimed at the undead creature. As the kitty growled at me menacingly as if to say ‘how dare you not stand there and let me eat you’ and rushed at me, I fired my pulses at it and jumped at the same time. The Shadowcats head was knocked sideways from the hit and while it did some damage, it wasn’t enough to finish it off. Meanwhile, I was sent flying once again as the shockwave effect of my own attack rebounded on me. Thankfully I didn’t spin too much from my impromptu flying leap and I corrected my position and fired several more purple pulses of kinetic force at the cat. All but one of my attacks missed unfortunately but the blows landed near it on the ground. Chunks of earth, mulched grass and shattered sticks exploded all around the creature from my misses, staggering it slightly and slowing it down from chasing after me. As I neared the apex of my jump, blue hair floating in front of me in the wind, my wings fluttering lazily, I decided to try something partially new. I held my hands together like I did to the Quillboar when I one shot it but when I activated my ability, I tried to hold it for longer, to see if it would do a charged shot. A purple orb of light appeared in my hands as power rushed down my arms. The orb got brighter as I held it for several moments longer before I fired it at my target just as I started to fall back down to the ground. The bright purple orb shot out from my outstretched hands and flew directly for the cat as a long streak of light followed in its wake. The blast knocked me back further as the attack hit the cat and it vanished in an explosion of sound and earth. I lay there and panted for a moment before I sat up to make sure nothing else was going to come and investigate all of the noises. I sincerely hoped not, I needed a short rest after all of this.

A loud hissing growl startled me from my thoughts and I looked over at where the noise had come from, astonished at what I saw. The shadowcat gingerly pulled itself out of the crater I had made of the ground around it. It may have been alive or undead? I don’t know, but it was in bad shape. It’s bony arm was dangling, seemingly shattered and half of its face was just a cracked skull. It was more bone than skin now underneath the black flames but it was moving still. I stood up wearily and prepared to fight. I still had some mana left, I couldn’t use the mana potion again straight away but I should have enough mana to finish it off. I suddenly remembered that I had the second ability that I hadn’t used yet.

“Rude! You’re supposed to die when I kill you!”

I waited, and judged the distance as the undead beast limped it’s way towards me, while it glared with murderous hate in its eyes at me, eyes which had somehow turned red. As I prepared to use this new ability, I instinctively raised my left arm and crossed it over my chest with my fist closed. As I activated [Psychic Slash] my fist glowed purple briefly before purple light leaked out in a small stream and I flung my arm at my enemy, opening my fist as I did so. A curved stream of violet light flashed across the intervening distance forming a C shape before it hit the cat directly in the face and vanished as the cat flinched but didn’t otherwise seem to be affected. I frowned at the stubborn undead that hadn’t quite become fully dead yet. So I charged up another slash attack and fired it before the creature could stumble its way to me. A moment later my second [Psychic Slash] tore into its mind, the creature grunted before collapsing, the shadow fire surrounding it fading away before it exploded in blue light as it died. I grunted myself as I collapsed to my knees and let out a weary sigh.

“I said I wanted to fight something, I just didn’t expect all that craziness to happen.” I said with a tired giggle. Just as I said that a notification made itself known. Apparently they don’t appear during combat which is good.

Congratulations! Your power level has increased to 268

I glowed slightly brighter and my hair moved as if in a light breeze for a moment. Huh, I hadn’t noticed that last time. Well the glow is harder to notice from my already always present glow and the wavy hair isn’t that noticeable if you’re outside with a breeze. Plus I’m not the most observant fairy around. I shrugged, there might be some other reason. I didn’t get that notification when I put the armour on either.

Congratulations! You have unlocked a new skill

Congratulations! Your [Telekinetic Pulse] is now rank 2

I was confused for a moment, I thought I had already unlocked the ability [Psychic Slash] before I remembered that I had only had it available because my gear boosted my power level. It now seems that it had risen high enough on its own to merit me unlocking it properly. Neat. As I looked at my stats sheet, I noticed I had another new skill. Obviously this one was from my armour boost since there was no notification for it.

I slowly walked, or more like stumbled my way to a large flat rock that sat partially in the water near the shore after reading through all of my notifications. I sat down heavily and dangled my feet over the edge. My legs were too short for me to touch the water sadly, it would’ve been nice but I don’t mind too much. Never know what manner of dangerous monsters lived in the water. I sighed wearily before I opened up my inventory and pulled out a papple. I couldn’t be bothered to cut it up right now, so I just held the large fruit to my face and nibbled away. By the time I was full, most of my face and half of my upper body was covered in fruit juice and pulp. Probably wasn’t the smartest thing I have done, since now my chest armour was all sticky and gross. As I placed the rest of my papple away into storage, I checked how the rest of my supplies were holding up. All my food supplies seem to be entirely fine. It would seem that food doesn’t spoil inside my inventory, or if it does, it’s a whole lot slower than it normally would be. I shrugged my shoulders, I will find out eventually I was sure. Suddenly I realised that my shoulder didn’t hurt at all when I did that. I experimentally moved my previously injured wing and when that didn’t hurt, I buzzed them gently, followed by more vigorous testing. No pain at all! I felt so relieved that I almost collapsed. I hadn’t realised how stressful it was not being able to fly until I could again. I couldn’t help but pump my fist and cheer a little, although much quieter than I would’ve normally had done. I’m a master at sneakiness after all. I took to the air and as I looked around, I noticed the shiny loot box orbs that floated at the location of my victories.

“Ooo shinies!” I blurted out as I flew to the nearest loot box.

As I placed my hand on the orb, a notification popped up in my UI.

Quillboar Pork x2

Would you like to collect all loot?

Yes No

I looted everything, not that it was actually all that much and it certainly wasn’t shiny but I might be able to sell it when I eventually make it to a town. As a bonus it’ll be a great test for my inventory!

I went through and clicked on all of the golden orbs one by one. Surprisingly two didn’t have any loot which was odd. It reminded me of an old online game that had that glitch: you'd loot the sparkly corpse but not get anything from it. Ah well. I looked at all the stuff I’d collected. It wasn’t a whole lot but better than no loot.

Undead Shadowcat Pelt x1

The Shadowcat pelt was an interesting item. It felt kind of rough but it was a really dark black and rippled a little like heat on a road in summer. It looked really awesome. Curiously only the Shadowcat gave me any money too. Just like the undead dire bear did. Maybe it’s an undead thing. My clothes still needed a wash or at least a quick rinse and so did I. So I made my way to the shallow area of the little wateringhole and had a quick bath, constantly on guard for any kind of sneaky business.

Rinsing my armour was a quick and easy job that didn’t leave it too wet and thankfully it was mostly dry by the time I had finished bathing. I wanted to try out my new shield ability, so I put my armour back on while exploring the beautiful area I had found. I cast [Psychic Shield] on myself and a violet shimmering light appeared, completely incasing me in its protection. It didn’t interfere with my vision and it didn’t seem to affect my flying too much either, which was nice.

I finally flew off after exploring the now peaceful waterhole, travelling back into the forest, alert for any more dangers. A few hours of flying through the forest saw me running into a couple of gross monkey creatures that threw their poop at me. I shot them down by destroying the branches that they swung off of before finishing them as they lay stunned on the forest floor. I shuddered at that memory, thankful that I didn’t get hit nor need to physically touch them for the crappy loot they dropped. It was starting to get into the early afternoon before I came across something weird.

A fairly large tree, at least for this forest. It was still tiny compared to a lot of the trees in Fairy. It sat in a clearing all on its lonesome with purple and green leaves and thick blackish bark covering most of it. Curiously, there was a hole in the tree a bit of a distance up from the ground. The part that was curious wasn’t the hole itself but the fact that a ring of magical words surrounded the edges and a glowing magic circle was in the centre of it all. Huh, I bet this would make a good book cover or something. As I cautiously flew closer to the weird tree, I received a notification in my UI.

Alert!

The entrance to the Tree Caverns Dungeon is nearby. Caution is advised.

“My first dungeon! Yes! Let’s go kick some booty and get some looty.” I shouted excitedly. I entered the hole in the side slowly but curiously. As I passed through the words encircling the entrance I felt a slight tingle over my whole body but nothing else happened. I hovered near the magic circle for a moment before I cautiously held out a hand and placed my palm in the centre. Nothing happened. “Huh, well that was anticlimac-.” Just as I had started speaking, there was a flash of light and everything went dark.
