Chapter 18 - The Airship That Tumbled

Chapter 18 - The Airship That Tumbled

In the Timonium-rich wasteland, a steamy helicopter flies fast from the sky. The design of the helicopter in this world can be referenced to the helicopters designed by Leonardo da Vinci (search for Da Vinci helicopters yourself for specific pictures), whereas the spiral part of the helicopters on Earth has four slurry blades, this helicopter has one whole spiral blade. It's like rotating up the face of a staircase. Puff puff puff puff steam boiler pushes the thick spiral parachute blades to rotate, leaving a trail of smoke in the sky.

The saga continues the world of large troop transportation by airships. As for information transmission, ultra-long range wireless telegraphy had not yet been invented, although wired telegraphy was already available. But the cost of setting up a wired telegraph is too great. And the forces on the plains are often the battlefield where all the forces are fighting, and wired telegraphs are extremely easy to be destroyed.

So the communication structure of this world was similar to node transmission, but here the nodes didn't use cavalry to deliver express messages, but rather used these helicopters that flew in the sky. This kind of helicopter is very fast, Vinci piece of territory is only as big as the area of Madagascar Island, for example, the distance between two city-states on the Great Plains of Dilsey where Renyu fought a four-month war is only 120 kilometers. A normal person walking four kilometers an hour crossed the entire area in three days on foot, and the cavalry rushed one day to attack the next day.

But it wasn't the cavalry that was the fastest, it was these helicopters. Those that fly in the sky are always much faster than those that run on the ground. These helicopters had a speed of about two hundred kilometers per hour, which could only be considered just an introduction for those flying machines on Earth. But for the whole Vinci, it can be said that it is convenient and incomparable to summon.

Logistics and intelligence are controlled by the command of Mina's legion.Renyu,Andrew and others have no chance to really take control of the army independently. What happened on Fleeglo Crags has long been reported by the direct logistics officer of the main camp to the supreme commander of the main army there.

The series of events that took place in Fleeglo were very well known to the base camp. The steam helicopter landed on the platform of the Citadel and the pilot brought a stack of information to the office of the Supreme Commander.Giacomo picked up the information and looked at it carefully. General Kalini on one side asked, “What about the conflict between Ensign Andrew and Ensign Renyu at Fleeglo Crag.”

Giacomo put down the intel and said, "It hasn't affected normal wartime developments yet, and both sides have consciously suppressed their differences."

General Kalini picked up the paper Giacomo had put down and looked at it and said, "It looks like Andrew conceded this argument."

Giacomo said, "He's the first military chief there, directly responsible for success or failure there, and is on the conservative side about the emergence of new weapons. This is understandable. He also chose very decisively to switch to the new weapons after they proved their worth."

Kalini looked at the information and read it out, “Ensign Renyu and Reserve Ensign Niiyama fought in the eastern mountains. According to their captured barrels and sabers and their battle report records. They engaged at least thirty battle cohorts of the enemy and eliminated seven battle cohorts of the enemy in twenty days. Before the Battle of Broken Raid, the main city-state sent transportation blimps to the front line thirty-four times per week, and the number of transports dropped to eight after the Battle of Broken Raid. According to intelligence observations, the direction of the blimp transportation flights has shifted to the eastern mountains.”

Giacomo handed Kalini another piece of intel in his hand and said, “What you're looking at is from the logistics officer. This is the report submitted by Captain Renyu, and according to what they have gotten from the mouths of their captors, there is a General Bataleo in the eastern mountains of Fleeglo who is rebelling against the brutal rule of the Duke of Silari in Fleeglo.”

General Kalini flipped through the intel a few more times and said, “The actual commander of the breaching battle was the one called Ensign Niiyama Prep. Renyu also worked with him to perfect this elite bombardier weapon.”

Giacomo similarly looked over some of the information Renyu had passed on, which detailed a series of shortcomings of the barrel-throwing and heavy mortar weapons that had been exposed in actual combat. Looking at Giacomo, who was engrossed in the technology, General Kalini prompted, "The conflicts in the Fliglow Vanguard army have not been eliminated."

Giacomo looked up and said, “Ensign Andrews has admitted his mistake. And has equipped his troops with this light artillery.”Giacomo was a technological inventor and a mere novice when it came to experience as a king, whereas Kalini was far more experienced.

General Kalini said, “Before the Battle of the Breach. Andrew's report on Renyu was negative comments such as poor artillery support. As for the specific shelling being a technical problem, our intelligence officers are amateurs and can't tell the exact cause. So whether it was Ensign Andrew's claim that Renyu deliberately delayed artillery support, or whether Ensign Renyu emphasized that heavy artillery simply could not be mobilized in the mountains anymore, we do not know. However, when Ensign Renyu completely abandoned the heavy artillery and demanded light artillery tactics. Ensign Andrews, in his conservative stance, gives us an unfavorable comment. It was felt that Renyu, who had no experience in independent combat, would only be burying a limited defense force if he acted rashly.”

Giacomo nodded and said, "At that time, you and I said that Andrew criticized over and over again, making Renyu doubt whether Andrew was impartial. But it shouldn't be fought in such a way that is suspected of splitting the army."

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

Kalini said, "Now the fact of the matter is that Ensign Renyu found an excellent combat officer who turned out to be only a petty officer of a lower rank. And while detailed combat battle reports are made public at the weekly combat exchange meetings, Andrew has not taken the initiative to de-escalate with his lieutenant since so far, nor has he once shown praise for Renyu, his lieutenant, in his reports."

Giacomo said, “Maybe he just forgot.”

Kalini said, "The reasons and military law for victories and defeats are to be taken on their merits, but front-line army commanders must give credit to their comrades, especially the good ones. I smell jealousy in these battle reports."

Raining grenades fell from the sky, bursting out countless shrapnel and triggering chaos in the four combat formations opposite. During this time of confusion, Niiyama commanded his two combat squads to press forward in a neat formation like a wall. Seeing the enemy pressing in front of them, the enemy, whose formation had just been disrupted by the bombs, panicked and opened fire, and three or four of Niiyama's troops were shot and fell.

While they were still panicking, a neat volley of bullets met them, and the bullets impacted on them spattering them with bright red blood. The Fleeglo soldiers, who had escaped, dropped their weapons and fled quickly.

Twenty days of fighting and gaining the upper hand time and time again seemed to have injected Niiyama with a never-tiring stimulant, finding an opportunity to take a bite out of the enemy even when faced with superior enemy forces.

This time, when he saw twice as many enemies in front of him, but some of them had just landed from the airships and were mixing with the receiving troops in a chaotic manner, and the airships were still unloading a steady stream of soldiers, Niiyama decided to attack.

Hot blooded doesn't equal no thinking. Having survived the Battle of Dilsey, Niiyama has more experience in independent combat than Renyu. In this era of industrial development, sometimes the non-commissioned officer could decide whether a battle was won or lost more than the soldier.

Cannon fodder could be trained in three months after conscription, but in the age of peace, sergeants were required to undergo at least two or three years of study. Of course there is a faster way to train sergeants, and that is on the battlefield. Those who survive are the experienced sergeants and will be quickly promoted to sergeant in wartime. This kind of selection is very cruel, because life is only once.

The existence of the protective light screen gives Niiyama, Renyu and the others a little more chance of surviving the brutal battlefield, and it is in the midst of the dangerous exchange of artillery fire that Renyu hones his calm shooting. (In a game like World of Tanks, you should be able to get a Composure skill bonus... funny)

After these many days of fighting, Renyu had learned a lot from Niiyama's command. Loading bullets to form effective firepower with teammates, and pulling the trigger to project and kill according to the order, it's easy to say, and you'll be familiar with it after practicing it dozens of times in normal times, but on the battlefield, who can guarantee that these steps will go smoothly in an environment where you don't know if you'll live to see the next second.

The sergeant has to safeguard his side's troop fire projection as well as judging the opponent's fire projection, giving the opponent a killing blow whenever possible when the opposite side is in trouble.Renyu and Niiyama work well together, and in the short time caused by the grenade bombardment Niiyama's team has maneuvered to the best possible position to give the opponent the biggest blow that will make the opposite side crumble in an instant.

The ropes dangling from the airships in the sky were still lowering soldiers, but the soldiers and receiving troops that had already come down were being broken up, and Niiyama commanded his own soldiers with bayonets in pursuit of the routed and disorganized soldiers.

Watching his soldiers in disarray, the commander staying on the transport blimp decided to support. Not from joining this mess below, of course, but to try and salvage the defeat by firing downwards from the firepower on the blimp.

Several crisp volleys of gunfire rang out from thirty meters in the sky, sweeping a line of smoking ash across the ground. the soldiers under Niiyama's command unconsciously looked up at the threat in the sky, and the pursuit slowed.

Just then the huge airship shuddered. The landing of this helium-carrying blimp was not a natural one. Rather, the dangling ropes were secured by a pile driver, and then the ropes were contracted to pull the airship down hard from the sky. Forty steel ropes smoothly pulled the airship to a height of thirty meters, dropping the ropes for the soldiers to climb down.

Renyu hadn't prepared a direct attack on this large massive airship from the start, at thirty meters the airship wouldn't do much damage even if it fell. His plan was to keep the huge blimp off balance, and while Niiyama was routing the enemy forces, Renyu's troops rushed underneath the blimp and strapped bombs to a dozen steel cables on the left side of the blimp. As the volley guns fired through the windows of the airship. The cables on the left side of the dirigible started to explode, and one by one the steel wires on the cables were blown off, and the remaining wires could not withstand the pressure of the dirigible's huge upward movement and also snapped one by one.

The row of steel cables on the left side of the airship connected to the earth were all ripped off by the huge uplift force of the airship. The airship instantly flipped over at 60 degrees. The speed of this flip was much faster than that of a ship on the sea. The shooting in the airship only lasted for one wave. Those soldiers who poked out half of their bodies to shoot were just like passengers on a bus braking sharply, the huge inertia made them lose balance, dozens of soldiers were directly thrown out of the window, the height of thirty meters no matter what position they were thrown down, the best result would be a fractured vertebrae, although this world can treat this kind of full body paralysis, but this was a chaotic battlefield, basically it could be declared hopeless.

However, this was only the beginning of a series of chain reactions, as a large number of steel cables were destroyed, the remaining cables were not enough to hold the buoyancy of the airships. A pile driver attached to the steel cables was yanked hard out of the earth by the immense buoyancy.

After only ten seconds, the entire airship had formed a ninety-degree right angle with the ground, and only the five steel cables at the head were still supporting it to be connected to the earth. However, everyone was able to clearly see that the land where these last five connecting steel cables of the pile driver were located was rapidly bulging, and dense spiderweb-like cracks appeared on the bulging earth packages around the pile driver, and kept spreading outwards. The last few steel cables simply could not withstand the huge uplift force of the airship and were pulled out.

As the last steel cable was pulled out by the airship, the entire airship just flew towards the sky at an almost ninety degree inclination angle.
