The Wandering Demon
The Beginning

The Beginning

[Narrator POV]

As the fires of battle raged around him, a lone soldier stood still looking out over the distance. The warrior was wearing oversized armor that looked like it would fall off at any second and was holding a sword that had two massive chips in it.

There was no hope in his gaze as he looked at the scene before him. Thousands of bodies from both sides lay dead on the field of grass that was now painted red with blood. Half of his company was wiped out killing off these invaders from another world.

"Pretty light casualties today boys. Well done!"

Contrary to what might look like a desperate situation, the commander smiled with glee as he realized this was the lowest casualty rate in the last month. Fewer casualties means fewer new recruits to deal with so the commander was very happy.

The boy, barely 19 years old, looks at the commander silently then gazes back to the field. He then turns around and silently heads back to his tent.

The next morning the boy wakes up and looks at himself in the reflection of a large puddle outside of the barracks tents. He is skinny due to malnutrition though he does have some lean muscle due to battling constantly for the past 5 years. He is medium height with beautiful bright blue eyes that sparkle and shine in the sunlight and had a head of curly hair. He was overall pretty attractive and probably would have had a girlfriend by now in other circumstances.

[Leo POV]

I will die today. I can feel it in my bones. This is not some random notion but a gut feeling that has been honed after five years of constant conflict. I became a soldier recruited into the defense army of Loria right out of my orphanage. The kingdom needed more soldiers so it came knocking to the places they knew no one would care about.

After being abandoned at the age of 6 I did not really have high hopes for my life. My kingdom was already poor and backwards compared to the rest of the developed world. We live in the middle ages while the other nations have electronics and planes. On top of that I was an orphan with little education or skills. I could only hope to be a laborer on a farm but even that would be a better destiny than what befell me.

Being a child soldier is not fun. After being forcefully dragged out of my "home" I was forced to endure harsh 12 hour days and barely any food or sleep. Disease ran rampant and abuse by superiors was to be expected.

The only thing that kept me going during this entire time was our company medic, Lisa. She was like and angel sent from heaven that could heal any wound that was give to us.

Every child in the company loved her and she treated everyone with respect and care back.

Anyways this is getting off topic. As I head out to fall in for the morning roll call, I hear the alarm bell ring. "This is it". I think to myself. Though I am unsure as to why I know that today will most likely be my last I still take it as the truth. I have become the most capable swordsmen in the company so I promise I wasn't going to go down easily.

"Grab your gear men!!" yelled the commander "This is the big one!"

I look up at the sky in horror as the pale blue backdrop of the day is covered with the dark red night that signals the invasion. Except this time the legion of horribly disfigured monsters is much much greater than all the previous waves. The number is easily 20 times the tired and outdated force that the kingdom can bring to bear.

Most of the soldiers start crying, some calling for their parents or praying to their god, but it does not stop the horrifying onslaught that is heading their way.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

"Rise My Men! Show me what you are made of. Do not face a cowards death but die a warrior to protect your homeland. Know that each monster you kill is a monster that cannot get to your friends or family. Let your death extinguish this scourge from our kingdom and our planet. Charge!!!"

As I hear the commanders speech I grimace at the thought of dying a pointless death for a country that has given me nothing but war and despair. I long to see my parents who I do not remember, I long to see the world that I have not explored, but most of all I long to have a romantic relationship. I have never seen a girl except those who were in the army as medics. Even though I do not like this I will not die a pointless death and my comrades agree.

As we pick ourselves up and charge into the hordes of monsters I lament at my fate. If only I was stronger, if only I was born in a difference place or time, if only I could experience romance and love.

No of that matters anymore. I hack and slash and hack some more.

A beast runs straight at me but I dodge left before slashing down on its right leg. The beast howls in pain but the sword gets stuck in its tough flesh.

I rip the blade out in time to dodge the swipe from its deadly claws, then I charge the beast and pierce it straight through with my sword. I pull my bloody sword out of the now dead beast and look for my next target.

This cycle of fighting killing and near death experiences continue for another two hours. By now I have many wounds covering my body. My thigh has a deep gash from the claws of a monster with my torso is pierced with two spikes that were launched at me.

By now the Kingdoms army had been whittled down to less than half strength and the beasts just kept coming. The frontline soldiers took the most casualties as they were out on the field fighting but the mage and cannon crews were not spared either.

Someone yelled "Retreat behind the defenses" which lead to all the frontline soldier to quickly run away back to the wood fences and mud ditches that were pre prepared. Those still fighting tried to disengage but many were left and swallowed by the tied of monsters.

I was able to make the 200 yards back to the first line of defenses through sheer luck and determination. My legs cried out in pain and blood dripped from everywhere. The spikes dug into my body with every movement and provided an unceasing pain.

As I fought through the pain another group of monsters approached me. I steeled myself and attacked the first one but missed his legs. The other monsters charged me and tried to take advantage of my mistake but I was able to jump back in time as a mage shot a fireball at the group. They exploded in flames and began to run around wildly which set other monsters on fire.

By now my vision was hazy as the smoke from the fire entered my lungs. I needed to get back and rest for a moment but this cruel world never gave me the chance.

Just as I turned around to limp my way back (a rookie mistake but I could not spare the energy to retreat properly) I felt a spike pierce my heart.

It was so sudden I didn't even realize till my face hit the ground. My body started to bleed even more and my vision started to get blurry. I slowly shifted my head so I could look around and see the scenes of my final moments. Just like me, many of the remaining veterans ran out of energy and the lines began to fall.

The monsters began to slaughter the cannon crew one by one in a gruesome scene that would have made me throw up had I not been at death's door. The mages seemed to have escaped as their blurry figures disappeared in the distance.

I could not blame them. They were better alive so they could meet up with the real royal army and defeat the otherworldly creatures before they kill the kingdom.

At least after this wave the kingdom would probably not have another attack for a while. As I lay there I finally realize this is it. It is over. Just 19 years of trashy life to my name and now I'm dead.

I did not expect to feel all these emotions. I thought that I would feel death is more of a release from this pain, but that was not the case. Anger about my life's circumstances and the way I died. How could I be so stupid to turn my back to the enemy even after 5 years of experience. Speaking of that why didn't I just run in the first place when I saw the massive horde. Damn. This sucks.

As I lay there bleeding out I also feel regret. What I would do to experience life. Romance. Love. and especially sex. Oh my god why couldn't I just do it once before I died. What I would do and give to have the chance to experience it .

As I can see it the world can burn just give me a chance. Please universe. I am begging.

But it seems that I am not that special. That fact just further increases my anger as I think of the few good points of my life. My one friend in life Alice who was taken from the orphanage and died before I left. My comrades in arms who I did not talk to much but trusted my life with. These people are all dead now.

WHY! WHY! WHY! did this happen?

As I close my eyes for the last time the universe answers my call. A words appear in my vision like a screen.

[Bloodline Unlocked]

I scream as energy begins to erupt out of me. The area around me explodes wiping out all the people and monsters around me. Then the world goes black.
