A New Dream

The sun’s rays shine vigorously down on my head and the back of my neck. My bare feet are firmly planted in the soil as I somberly pull the plow. I reach my hand into the pouch at my side to pull out a seed. I tenderly plant a seed deeply packing it into the freshly plowed soil. Because of the harsh sun, I stand up to wipe the sweat off my forehead and dark black hair.

“It sure is hot as balls out here.”

Day in and day out I work these wheat fields. I’m sick of it. All because I’m part of the proud Clairfield family coming from a long line wheat farmer ancestors. My father tells me that our ancestors created wheat farming, but I know that’s a load of bull. I don’t even know why mother would come to this place. She’s from all the way in the eastern grasslands of Kai country. Mother tells me that my name, Sota, is popular over there. My face instantly formed a frown. But of course, I’m stuck here. In Brown Wheat Village, all you can be is a wheat farmer. There is only one main road in the village and one export, wheat. The population is incredibly small containing only old people and young brats. My entire body tensed up with anger. Not a single beautiful girl my age lives here! My glorious youth is suffering damn it! Am I doomed live out my life as a hermit wheat farmer?

It wasn’t always like this. My face formed another frown and I sadly drop my shoulders. My childhood friend Emilia, I still remember her pretty face and beautifully shining purple hair. She was the prized jewel of this village. We were friends since birth. I remember playing in the wheat fields, taking baths together, sleeping in the same bed together. A devilish smile forms on my face. Those are some of my fondest memories. We always talked about leaving this village and becoming adventurers exploring the world.

Everything was perfect. We were destined to fall in love. But when we were both six years old, Emilia discovered she could use magic. A villager using magic was rare enough, but even more so she was able to use magic without an incantation. Everyone in the village was stunned. News spread throughout the country of Fahir that a girl gifted with magical abilities lived in Brown Wheat Village. Soon, a handsome noblemen came to the village asking to take her to the capital to further her magic studies, promising her family prestige and money. Of course, her family accepted. Emilia left the village. I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye because I was working the wheat fields at the time. She wanted to leave this village just as much as me and she got her opportunity to do so. Unfortunately for me, I was forced into being a simple wheat farmer.

Though, my spirit hasn’t dwindled. I still plan to leave this crap village. I will become a great hero known throughout all of Kradon. I’ll have money, fame, and women. Emilia will surely come running into my arms after hearing how great I am.

Everyone will look up to me. The people in this crap village don’t understand my unlimited potential. Whenever I talk about my dream to be a hero, they all laugh right in front of my face. Is it not rude to laugh about someone's dream? When I bring up to my father, he just walks away shaking his head asking himself where did he go wrong. They all think I can’t do it just because I don’t know how to use a sword, magic, or other useful skills. But I know I can learn if someone taught me. Tomorrow, I will start my hero training for sure.

I continued working the wheat fields, until I came to the outskirts of my family farm. The sun was beginning to set. This was the last path of soil before I’m done. Just as I was about to start working on it, a group of mushrooms caught my eye. Right on the border of our farm was a group of mushrooms with blue spots. I walked up to the mushrooms and placed my plow behind me, so I could inspect the them up close. I remembered father telling me about how some mushrooms were poisonous to people and crops, so you should always get rid of them before they spread. But I can’t seem to remember which kinds of mushrooms were poisonous. Was it green spots or was it blue spots?

Grrrrrrrr. I hear growling sounds coming from my stomach. It’s been awhile since I’ve eaten. Then I stare intensely at the mushroom in my hand. Should I eat it to see if it’s poisonous? No, that is stupid right? I am hungry, really hungry, but eating a possibly poisonous mushroom because I’m hungry is silly. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Who would do something so…. grrrrrr. But I….grrrrr. Really now, I can’t eat this mushroom. GGRRRRRRRRRRR. The sounds of my stomached vibrated in my ear. I once again stare intensely at the blue spotted mushroom. My mouth opened up ever so slightly. My tongue salivates. I put the mushroom near my mouth and drop it on the ground. I may only be sixteen, but I am still a wise man. I will not eat this poisonous mushroom, even if I’m starving.

I turn around to grab my plow, so I can rid our farm of these deliciously dangerous mushrooms. I put one foot forward, but feel something caught on me. A grass root wrapped across my foot. My body pushed forward. I was falling. I quickly move my other foot in front and slam it down, so I can steady myself. Unfortunately, my foot came down hard on the plow that was sitting upright on the ground. As my foot pushed down on the plow’s head, the handle came shooting up hitting me right in the middle of my face. Pain throbbed all over my head. I was starting to see stars. My foot was still caught on the grass root causing me to twist my body as I came crashing down. I landed face first into the patch of mushrooms, even worse I could feel that one of the mushrooms went into my mouth. Then, everything went to black.

Opening my eyes, I became aware that I was in a blank white space. Someone stood before me. It was a grey bearded man wearing a white robe. He was covered in a golden aura. He spoke to me.

“Welcome boy, I am God.”

Stunned by what this man said, I had trouble thinking, but managed to say something, “What am I doing here?”

The man calling himself God simply smiles at me and replies, “Your life has passed and now I am here to reincarnate you into a new life.”

Shockingly, I yelled, “Reincarnated? I’M DEAD!”

“Yes my boy and you will be reborn again as another,” God causally replied.

Thoughts were racing around my head. The mushrooms were poisonous. What did he mean reincarnated into another? Does this mean I will live again? Could this be my second chance at life? I will no longer be a simple wheat farmer in Brown Wheat Village. I can follow my dream and become a great hero venturing the world. This is it. Emilia wait for me. My glorious youth will be abundant. My time has come. IT’S HAPPENING, IT’S HAPPENING.

“Okay boy, looking at your qualification you are the perfect candidate to be reincarnated as a simple tomato farmer in Red Tomato Village,” God announced.

My face was emotionless.

“WAIT WHAT!” I screamed. “Did you say tomato farmer?”

The God showed a surprised face from my earlier reaction. he answered, “Yes I did my boy.”

This isn’t right. This can’t be happening. I won’t be a farmer a second time!

“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” I let out a powerful scream and faint.

I open my eyes to see blue. I move my body upwards to find that I was lying down in the patch of blue mushrooms, while I was sleeping. I turn my head up and see the sun shining brightly. I must have of slept through the night. Phew. It was only a dream. I’m still alive. The blue spotted mushrooms weren’t poisonous after all.

“HAHAHAHAhahahahhaha,” I couldn’t help but laugh from the bottom of my heart.

I was laughing hard because now I had a new goal. It seems that I can’t become a hero. My parents, the village, even God himself says I can’t be a hero. I am wise man. I know not to go against fate. If I can’t become a great hero, then I’ll just become the exact opposite. I will be a great demon lord. The best demon lord that ever lived.

With my new found goal, I run through the wheat field destroying all the crops in my path. My body feels invigorated with this new found sense of self.

“I will be the demon lord!” I shouted loudly.

I continued to run with all my might. I reached my house where my father and younger brother were standing outside.

When father sees my face, he shouts, “Where have you been Sota?”

I completely ignore my father’s question and run right past him and scream, “Sorry father, but I’m leaving to become the demon lord!”

On that day, I ran through the village screaming that I would be the demon lord. I continued to run as far as I could from Brown Wheat Village. I never once looked back. My journey starts today.

A few minutes had passed since Sota ran past his father screaming about leaving and becoming the demon lord. Johan Clairfield, a proud member of the Clairfield family, stood absolutely silent.

Minutes passed until, Ryu Clairfield, younger brother of Sota Clairfield by four years, asked his father, “What happened with Sota?”

Johan Clairfield looked at his second son. He place his hands upon Ryu’s shoulders.

Then, he broke his silence, “Your brother, Sota died in childbirth. You are the sole heir to the Clairfield wheat farm.”

“Okay Father,” Ryu simply replied.

The father and only son stood together looking into the distance thinking about their new future.
