Chapter 1: The Acceptal

Chapter 1: The Acceptal

As my eyes opened only darkness showed itself, it was as time had stopped for a moment until the piercing screams were heard. Screams of pain bore through my eardrums assaulting me with an extreme panic. As my eyes got used to the darkness i looked around the place that once was home. Walls had crumbled and the floorboards were covered in soft moss. The smell of musk penetrating my nostrils. As i took a deep breath i calmed down.

What had really happened after i blacked out? Is this a dream. No i can't be a dream. Then i wouldn't have been able to think this clearly. And most importantly what was those screams i heard. Standing up i couldn't help but notice something was different. My arms felt heavier and the darkness also calmed me way more than it should. As i looked down at my arms i felt nauseous. Instead of my normal long and lanky arms that were a perfectly tanned color, two hard and muddy arms had replaced them. On my arms were layers of mud, and growing on me was thick green moss. I almost panicked again but i held myself together and tried to realize my situation. I was a victim of some kind of disease that made me grow moss on my arms right? The hospital could fix me up couldn't they?! I fell into panic once again.

After accepting what i had become, I pumped myself up. I needed to know where those screams came from. It was probably other people like me. As I tried to walk I realized how hard it was going to be. Moving with layers of mud on you is not the easiest thing you know. Trying to claw away all the mud from my body I felt enormous pain. It was like tearing away your own skin. Don't tear off the mud and moss, thanks for warning me new world(Obvious Sarcasm). After learning my lesson, I walked with heavy steps out of the thing that was once a doorway. Looking at my once beautiful and prosperous city empty of life was.... painful to say the least. Walking down the old wooden staircase as the wooden steps groaned was quite scary. The steps felt like they would fall at any given time if they wanted.

When i got a full view of the city the the destruction was everywhere. The cars were covered in mud, old trees were overgrown with moss and the trunks were rotten. The roads were basically mud dunes. It was a desert of mud and thick thick moss. Although that was bad, the absolute worst thing was that you couldn't see the sky. Absolutely no sunlight shone through the thick mud cover. It seems this city was in a air bubble as the mud hardened. As lucky as i was i don't think i'd really choose to live here anymore. Still, it was my home town and also my birthplace so i didn't think I could leave it behind. Setting of into the direction I thought the screams came from i walked down the desert of mud.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

After maybe an hour of walking the fatigue caught up to me. Stumbling down to one leg, I decided that resting for a while would be a good idea. Sitting with my back against the wall I thought of what i wanted to do, what my goal was. As a wise man once said "going without a goal, is going nowhere". Following the words of that wise man, I decided that I should get to the surface. Maybe I could reconnect with the people on top of the mud. Rising to my feet I felt energetic once again. Walking to the nearest apartment building I looked for signs of life. Since I didn't find anything,  I went up to the second floor. This time the stairs were made of metal which made me feel a lot safer then last time. Looking through dark apartments with holes in the wall was not a soothing experience. Since I'd never been good with horror, I quickly searched them and each time I didn't find anything I felt like a weight was lifted of my heart.

In the last apartment i didn't see anything special... but since i decided to search them, I went inside. Sitting in the corner was a bloody human figure. With bloody moss and mud surrounding it I guessed what it had done. It's arms only showing muscle tissue and long root marks in them, whilst the face had tears running down it. Not accepting what it had become, it had tried to tear off the moss from it's arms only to die a horrific death. I felt myself trying to vomit but i couldn't since there was nothing to throw up. Grabbing at the nearest object to try and stabilize myself i fell to the ground. Seeing someone that was dead had made me almost want to die again. Crawling out of the apartment i tried to calm myself down. That it was okay, that i shouldn't worry. But deep inside i knew that i was lying to myself. My mood had sunk considerably and i almost couldn't get down the stairs. With tears running down my face I just sat there on the stairs, after a long time I stood up once again. Walking down the dunes I was weirdly calm. But my trance ended when i heard a sound, it was like a fork on a blackboard. But it was a lot louder. I didn't know where it came from so, I did what a normal person would do. I ran, I ran into the nearest building. I had ran into a cafe, so i hid behind the counter. I sat still for many minutes. Standing when I thought I was safe was a bad mistake. A very bad mistake....
