Issue 38: Inside Job

ISSUE 13: INSIDE JOB

This is not a drill, A51 Level 5 containment lockdown. Notify all security forces. The Cabal has breached the facility.—Emergency Coded Broadcast.

The entire Omega Defender Corp has vanished. Notify the Council of Five!—Level 1 Mulitgalatic Distress Beacon Notification.

I’ll keep an eye on those kids. Had a couple of talks with the Lady and Proctor Gansis. I’m everyone’s special investigator. It’s why I am just listed as a Detective. Turns out Truth is important. I’m just glad I managed to convince Arthon to share that blood sample.—Argus Paxton

I understand why the Legion of Tomorrow had to keep me under lock and key for a while. Man, I would have spilled the beans by accident because some people here, even though I know them from my Earth, are similar but their jobs are completely different. Plus Star is a whole lot older here.—Rune, a Man Outside of Time and Space.

Thoth had his reasons for hitting the human side of A51. One, it was easier to infiltrate in some ways. What he didn’t realize is that to maintain her cover at the time, Hillary Bookes was actively working for and against herself simultaneously. As I think about it now, my father was right. It’s a good thing to keep an eye on rotted assets. Now I know why the president kept her within the A51 advisory board. –Sleeping in Starlight, a memoir of the 22nd century.

Lunar One

The Moon

December 6th, 2103

As Eliza and Paxton left, the Ur Stone trembled. Their footprints disappeared and the base faded from people’s conscious thought once more. There was no way to erase this structure but obfuscate it from people’s minds until the time was right? That was doable. It helped to have temporal alliances as well. No so much for changing the past but to seed it just so.

While a popular theory, time expanded outward. The future could view the past but couldn't interfere. Other planets and universes took other paths. That was the only way to see the possibilities of one choice among many paths. In many universes, Eliza and her family existed.

Not always Typherian.

Not always Human but more often than not: Defenders. Those belts always found those who were worthy. The Ur Twins efforts bought their people time and the ability for rebirth. The Stone reached out. Finding the man it wanted to connect with. A man unstuck from his home universe.

Rune.

For the moment, Sir Avalon’s team was attempting to gauge the visitor’s magical output. To see how his powers interacted with their magic. He was a rather jovial fellow. Considering the Earth he came from. The Ur saw the trials and tribulations of that place and was glad it was healing. Their defeat over their Calamity gave the Stone a way to inform V’alkor of certain aspects of their universe’s situation. Another thread wove around that young man. His bloodline wasn’t even native to that Earth he came from. The Ur decided to gather together a catalog of universes. Locating Earths and others who had managed to divert, disassemble, or outright destroy the Calamity. What the corrupted Keepers didn’t realize: Their Unity was a multiversal entity. Sliding across the countless expanses of worlds. Anything and everything was fuel for its continuing expansion.

The Librarian materialized next to the Stone, “My brother inherited many things. I will show you. I am just glad this place didn’t blackmail the Murphys here. Within that other Earth, let's call it Earth-Demiurge.” She was clothed in the same black robe as before. She raised her hands, laying her palms against the surface. Ur reacted with alarm. How did she bypass this cloaking!?

The Librarian grinned, “Not to worry. I am an expert in your type of magic. Yes. My people encountered your Universe along the Leylines. They intersect many across the Multiverse.” Her eyes ran over the slightly raised marks. “Clever! You imprinted your Eliza’s knowledge on the primary. No wonder she can read Scholar and some magical aspects. You even made a temporary Space-Time bridge.” She let out a relieved sigh. “So nice to work with people that have some idea of what they are doing.”

She tapped her foot in thought.

“For now, I suppose I'll just codename your Universe Ur-Kara.”

The Twins had given up their physical bodies to hurl themselves into this universe. It distressed them greatly that so much of their civilization and people became so corrupted. Like Aether, they wanted to restore the beauty of everything they could. Which is why so many “dead” universes resided within this “simple” rock. Like Eliza and her brother within the Primary Eden, they could hide many things from technical and magical sight but the Librarian proved they should still be cautious.

The Librarian nodded. Her face still clouded to the Stone. “Indeed. Very wise. I dare not utter your names here. They have power.” Ur agreed. Many things within magic had pull and consequence. But to know a person’s true name was a massive burden and promise. It reached out and gently probed. Asking for permission. The Librarian granted it. A doorway shimmered for a moment. Imprinting itself upon the Ur.

Within was the vast knowledge of more galaxies, civilizations, and cultures that the Stone gazed upon with equal amounts of curiosity, amazement, and rising concern. The First Turning may have been the initial spark of life throughout the multiverse but the Ur saw that the first beings had lived within the spaces between that eventually morphed into the Weave. The Litari were descended from those beings that lived within those realms. These Twins formed a tiny thread. Shot it into the Library. Its hostess closed the door.

“I have a feeling this will be quite the partnership.”

Ur agreed. As its probe went deeper into the library, the Truth of the Ouroborus was plain. If they could still drink. They would have downed an entire keg of the hardest whiskey.

Sir Avalon groaned as Rune shot various questions at Eliza and her parents. He wanted to make sure the young man got it all out of his system before he went prime time as the holovids noted it. His skin flared with those usual blazing indigo runes as he talked. Eliza and her mother shared some key glances along the way. Especially when he blurted out, “Hey! Do you have that fancy belt that had a mind of its own? Our Star wasn’t able to pilot a ship when I left but it was a present from her mom. She disabled that invading pirate fleet with it. With our help. Me, Conjurer, AD4M_LA53/r ….”

Thomas held up a hand, “What about that Demigure business?”

Rune replied, “Well the only one that didn’t believe her brother was evil the entire time was Eliza. The rest of us had no idea what he was planning…”

Thomas’s face became more rigid as the story went on. He could feel J’ino’s disquiet and upset. The Typherian felt awful for her counterpart on this other Earth. Not only losing her son to govt experiments but that Earth sounded like it still needed time to find itself. A cloaked woman materialized behind Rune, “Brother. Why give them all the bad information first?” She shook her head.

“That Dexter was trying to form a sort of fighting force that could be used as frontline things against the Unity. Earth-Demiurge is healing quite nicely. Plus he’s much more mellowed out now. His sister’s good cheer saw to that. Besides he was using a device meant for the Throne of the Multiverse but wasn’t within the right mind to wield it. “

She continued while making sure her brother was paying attention,” In fact, on that Earth, Star is doing just fine helping clean up the galaxy. Her belt situation is different and just so you don’t spill things around the wrong people…” She waved and various sigils formed around her brother’s head. “There. Now he won't be able to go off on our world’s storied adventures unless it's for ears that would understand.”

*****

As interesting as Rune’s comparisons were I was glad she was able to curb his enthusiasm a bit. Not that he was a bad sort, it's just that I thought I had a bad poker face, his was even more flimsy than mine. He got a particular look in his eyes and threw a punch at me. It connected with my chin and I stood motionless with shock as he cradled his right arm and hand.

“OW!” He shook it and I heard bones reforming.

“What are you made of?” He seemed flabbergasted. My father’s expression was sheer ferocity, “Jar!” Rune stood ramrod straight, “Yes sir!” He presented some American money but the twenties had a face I didn’t recognize. Dad took the money anyway. “If you ever punch my daughter again I am going to make you wish you weren’t born.”

He narrowed his eyes further, barking out, “This isn’t a competition Mr. Rune. We have demi training facilities, not fight clubs, to test the limits of potential heroes. And to examine the capabilities of the villains as well.”

Rune nodded rapidly.

Rune’s face schooled into a more attentive expression. Had he sensed the magic rising within my father? I could see Ra out of the corner of my eye.

The Egyptian demi winked at me.

Rune rubbed the back of his neck as Sir Avalon guided him back to the quarantine area. He sighed, “Am I ever gonna get to explore?”

Avalon waved the young man forward. “Not just yet. You still have to study some things. So you don’t alarm the general population.”

“So multi Earths isn’t commonly known?” His tone indicated a level of incredulity.

“It is but people also recognize that the Legion protects them against say insane zombies from Dead Earth 12, for example.”

I just watched them leave and turned to my parents, “There are times I am glad I can’t get drunk.” Dad threw an arm around me. I realized I was a good 3 inches taller than him now. I rubbed my jaw. Mom eyed the spot that Rune had punched. She muttered, “He broke his hand and wrist when he hit you.”

Dad agreed. “Well, that just makes me more motivated to give Doc more samples. She’s trying to see if magically enhanced demis even via artifacts might help you as well.”

His eyes took on a very familiar protective glint. “Why the constant test of strength? Sir Avalon has some notes but I still wonder why he feels the need.” I shugged. Trying to picture the world he came from. “From what I can tell they don’t have habitat rings or prolong. He kept eyeing mom like she was made with two heads.” She didn’t look much older than me but her people’s prolong were even better.

My father just winked, “Let’s head out. We have a meeting to prep for.”

*****

Rune grimaced.

His hand still sparking with painful aftershocks of bone and muscle reknitting.

He continued to learn through this Earth’s INet. It was something else. Plus this version of Adam Lazer was loaded with all sorts of extra. Sir Avalon pointed at the cuffs on the table. “Put your wrists through those, it will heal you faster, they are also enhanced by Doctor Impossible in case of demi injury during combat.” Rune slipped his hands within. The cuff vibrated, his eyes flying wide open as waves of relief shot through his body.

This Earth had some amazing stuff.

Maybe something here could help him find his way home.

One thing was for sure: That General Murphy was even more protective. He’d seen the look on that Eliza’s face. The confusion but also a hint of grief. She really couldn’t feel much. He lifted his head suddenly as he looked up who this Doctor Impossible figure was. That face was hauntingly familiar. Even with the green dynamo mask keeping the hair out of the way.

Oh shit.

He turned to find Avalon waiting, his brow raised, “Yes?” The blond bearded demi was calm and collected. He added, “Look, there’s a reason why we have Multiverse Visitor containment. It's to help you. Not to keep you in the dark. What is it?”

Rune blurted out, “ Who are the Golden Redeemers? Do you have a picture of all of them?” He brought up a holo display in response.

Rune saw the GSD, with the green energy but it was black here instead of white, alongside a man he recognized as General Whitehouse. He had to remind himself that this Eliza wasn’t in High School. Her best friend Eddie was wearing some retro style Captain Cosmos setup. That was the same. The show at least. The dark-haired man with the blond streak. That was new. The Golden Bulleteer was younger here, so much younger, and could manipulate metal like the other one but he actively fought alongside his wife. The giant sphere with the red Iris reminded Rune of those super-secret robots and mechs that Steele had wielded.

He had made some searches here and found that Felix existed here as well.

He was the man who had discovered something called a Dweller Gate near Mars.

His Company was called Steele Space Division: Exploring the Cosmos.

This whole place was like his universe’s NASA on steroids.

He rubbed his ear. Remembering a much older Grandma Murphy that commanded respect as they recruited Me’het to save his soul from the Duat. That version had punched out Death itself at one point. He wondered if Lanis was just as energetic here. He typed in his name. Vic Coster.

He let out an excited whoop!

Professor Coster was working at Cambridge. The leading researcher on Multiversal String Theory. On the Terran Alliance payroll for Extra Worldly Encounters. Avalon smiled, seeing how the man’s eyes followed the pictures showcasing him surrounded by his family here.

“My sister and everyone here is perfectly happy. I even have kids!”

That made Rune smile. Then he frowned. His voice rising with concern, “Can you tell Doc Impossible that I’m sorry?”

Sir Avalon patted his shoulder, “You can tell her yourself.”

The door opened and an expertly uniformed woman walked in. Her green eyes blazing. With that same black hair. He gulped.

Lorain opened with, “So why did you hit my Cornfed? We have things that test….”

She didn’t so much rant as she explained how the hierarchy worked here on this particular Earth. Which when it came to Eliza, seemed very similar to his home sector.

After a few minutes, he replied, “My Eliza is very weak to magic, and the fact that yours withstood my punch, speaks volumes.” Sir Avalon cut in with, “That’s why we have been testing yours. Your body hasn’t acclimated to this part of the Weave yet.”

Lorain gripped his hands. He felt her power shoot out to heal him the rest of the way.

Her eyes were dark with worry, “Also, please use our VR decks while you are here. You can even simulate fighting Star at 10% output to begin. If you want to see if you can keep up.”

His interest was readily apparent. He exclaimed, “That’d be awesome!”

She left. Her thoughts on just how extensive he had messed his arm up. The realization made her keenly aware of how gentle her Captain treated adversaries.

Area 51 (Human Side)

Level 1 (Conference Hall Alpha)

December 8th, 2103

Diamonds aka M’taris Ayeer held out her hand. I clasped it, turning it just so, to give her the traditional handshake known throughout the Terran Alliance. I think her bodyguards almost fainted. The wicked twinkle in her eyes hinted that she was enjoying all the “local” flavor. Along with my general “ignorance” of how Typha treated its esteemed Houses. The King of England, Elias Payne, also had a roguish glint. He gave me a good thump on the shoulder. His sharp whistle filled the room and 6 corgis burst into the area. Their Bardaxian counterparts joined in on the general commotion.

Bardax’s ambassador to Typha trotted over. Put a paw forward, <> Her face was that of an Australian Sheepdog. An excess of head tilts washed over me. They wouldn’t take “No” for an answer. I rubbed the back of my neck and jumped slightly when Cooper wiggled his way between me and Queen Ayeer.

I was still getting used to the new sensations running along my spine. Along with the fact that I had some feeling in my legs and arms now. Not to regular standards for a normal person but a miracle for me.

His open and trusting brown eyes staring up at my grandmother with unabashed joy, <> Grandmother knelt to give Cooper many generous pats. From how sour X’mil looked this was a very serious breach of protocol but grandmother continued giving our 4 footed Earth dogs and their cosmic cousins even more attention. It made me wonder just how under wraps she was on Typha. As if she knew what I was thinking she stood suddenly and interlinked her arm with mine. “Care to show me around the facility?” I nodded. Cooper and Augustus were on my heels. Mother and Lorain fell in behind us as we made our way out to the main concourse. At the very center was the multispectral orb that drew my attention so long ago. Grandmother smiled as she saw me staring at it. “So what did you ask it the first time they let you in closer?” I reached out and touched the surface.

I smiled down at her.

“I wanted to know what everyone’s favorite food was. Universal food!”

The sphere rotated and glowed. Lighting up the room.

Unlike before, where it only spoke in a whisper, now it proclaimed, “Bardax number 1 import from Earth is bacon. Followed by Turkey Bacon. Along with Maple Syrup.”

Cooper’s ears flickered, <> Augustus barked with complete agreement. Doc picked up the corgi, “Who’s the worst ever?” His stubby tail wigged. Lorain continued to cradle him like he was the finest specimen of a dog ever made. One of the King’s Own leaned in, his words troubling Grandmother and J’ino greatly. I could see them both stiffen. Mother turned to me, motioning for one of the side rooms. We all followed.

Once inside she said, “Captain Murphy. This will be extremely “off the books” but we will need you to go to Omega Defender Sector 021. TO see if you can pick up anything unusual.”

Dexter’s disquiet filled that special corner of my heart. The part linking us both through the Weave. Mom wanted us to investigate.

As we re-entered the main conference hall my senses were assaulted with the multitude of sounds and smells. I kept scanning for trouble. I pulled my cap over my eyes as I passed through the din. No shouts or cries of alarm. Just the callbacks of the patrols. The Golden Bulleteer and his people were on a randomized patrol pattern. Everyone was expecting the worst. The whole facility was crawling with security, demis, and other special forces, everyone who was anyone on Earth was here. Even reps from our outer colonies were here.

X’mil’s thunderous expression was extinguished when M’taris bored into him with her regal stance.

His back stiffened and he turned on his heel.

J’dax waved us over, “Queen Mother.” He placed a light kiss on her right cheek. I wondered why mom didn’t do that in public. Must be something to do with Typherian social norms. Which my mother merrily left in the dark as far as I’m concerned. X’mil shot daggers at J’dax, “Have you no shame?” He hissed. Even though he was glowering from the other side of the room I could hear him easily.

Ahh, so my uncle was rebelling somehow.

The King of England ambled over and greeted Queen Ayeer with a hearty bow which she returned as a curtsy. As an equal. X’mil’s expression turned beet red. Mom’s sheer glee cut through everything. Queen Mother’s day out indeed.

One day down. 4 more to go.

*****

X’mil’s head of personal security watched the m’tesh squirm as the Queen snubbed tradition. This was why the Ayeer line was weak. Let them revel in a few days of normalcy. House Urraden would soon tear that family apart. The pain that bloomed in his chest reminded him of the Child of Chains coiled there. Yes, this Thoth person might have a plan but so did the All-Father. His brothers and sisters of Oblivion would give their lives for this glorious chance.

X’mil thumped the table with his fist. His nasally mindvoice grated on the agent’s senses. His eyes locked onto the Empath and he buried his feelings behind the shield offered. X’mil would take the fall. He was certain.

*****

Mom’s hand shot out to steady me as I leaned against King Payne as my head filled with the most caustic amount of hate I had ever felt in my life. Even more so than Hilary Brookes produced. M’taris rested a hand along my neck for the briefest moment. Her eyes glued to my face. “Captain?”

J’dax activated some sort of shielding. The sounds of everyone and everything faded. I could only hear our little group. Well if you included all the protective Royal Bulwark along with it.

I rubbed my forehead. “Ma’am. Who hates you that much?”

The Typherian Royal guards closed in on us even tighter. Forming an outer ring. King Payne was confused for a second but faced outward as well. He knew what bodyguards did. His own were cloaked about him as well. The fact that the queen allowed it spoke of her character in a profound way. I was able to tell. I could see the shadowed forms of Britain’s finest alongside the hidden Typherian contingent.

Mom’s eyes were stone, “Urraden is here.”

I brushed against the Orb at the center of the room. “Currently compiling information. Please stand by.” Its colors swirled. All I could see was the vastness of space within its depths. M’taris reached out and nodded. Her hand pulled me away. “Daughter.”

Mom smiled at Payne. “Care to join us?” He nodded.

All sound returned. J’dax motioned to me. Whatever anyone else heard was vastly different. Many diplomats were congratulating the King of England on a superb joke. A good way to showcase humanity’s humor to our esteemed visitors.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

M’taris continued, “Let’s take the Captain to the mess hall. I want to see what premiere human food tastes like.”

We entered the cafeteria. J’dax fiddled with some other tech piece I had no name for and we exited behind the various cooking stations. No one noticed our exit. Except for Eddie. He continued to act as if he was talking to us at the various booths dotting the diner. Over the years A51 continued to change as more personnel and visitors were added. I hoped one day it would turn into a central knowledge hub or museum that anyone could transverse.

The halls grew quieter as we took a disorienting path to the Jupiter. Even I had trouble keeping up with all the various codes and countersigns that went into the back paths of the facility.

The Jupiter Rising

Meeting Compartments (Crew Deck)

Elias Payne was no fool. Sir Avalon was correct. Eliza Murphy was much more than she appeared. He knew secrets when he saw them. He had defended his lands for centuries. Since the times of the Crusades and the Lionhearted Brigade. He had not survived the tides of Time to let England or the Earth crumble. The Morrigan called to him. From his Priory of High Heaven. Hidden within the Tower of London itself. Only those he invited into it could ever know it was there.

Steward of Land and Iron.

Heed our call. Protect those that wield the Stars and Stripes of Foreign shores.

Payne whistled for his Corgis. They followed him to the meeting room.

Many would never believe but he had seen many civilizations come and go.

The invading elements of the Void Walkers. Those devils who manipulated events from afar. Hoping to pillage his Leyline. His promise. They would find the Iron Line a bitch to break. Little John, the biggest of his 4 footed companions jumped up into his lap as he sat at the meeting table. Eliza leaned over and drank deeply from a jug worthy of any Englishman.

J’dax leaned over and spoke, “Do you know who the feeling was coming from Captain?” She looked troubled. Or rather deeply disturbed.

*****

I glanced at the King, “Has Sir Avalon told you about a certain rescue?” Payne nodded. His eyes narrowing with concern. I continued, “I only felt that kinda hate once before. From the things inside the Null Ship. Those Seed monsters. “ I shuddered. Grandma poured something strong into a cup and handed it to me, “You are among friends here. You may trust that old vagabond with your life, Eliza.” Payne’s eyebrows rose. He gave M’taris another probing look. Then grinned wolfishly.

“I see you have many talents dear Lady of the Cosmic Play.” He touched his heart with a very old style salute I remember reading about in Earth’s historical books. The Corgis were all quiet. Very well behaved. I looked at the one that was near twice the size of his brothers. Asking the obvious, “Why say he’s a Little John? Did you know Robin Hood sir?” England had all sorts of legends of famous demis. Just like America did. Lorain took a sip from the offered mug and her eyes went wide.

“Whatever this is, I want more of it, might even be strong enough to get past Eliza’s stamina.” Payne gwaffed.

His mirth was evident. “It should. It's magic-based. Used to calm even the most nervous. Not that our Captain Murphy here gets worried without due reason.” He winked.

“British ingenuity with American can-do spirit,” I spoke this with genune warmth.

He saluted me with that same ancient greeting. Like a Knight of Yore. Or Muthra.

I didn’t know if it was the alcohol or whatever else was in the room but I sprang to my feet. “Sir Avalon….he’s Merlin isn’t he?” Payne nodded. His grin widening. I sent out an inquiry to Jupiter. Asking her to cross-reference the salute. She came back with one very surprising result. I found my mouth hanging open. I shut it with a firm click. “No wonder the Queen likes you, sir. Or rather I should say, Robin Hood. The man who harassed Thoth way back when. With his band of Merry Men. Or in this case: Muthra.”

Payne’s smile could light up a whole theater. “Very good captain. Or should I say Stripes? Or do you prefer Banner? Star? That lovely woman who helped shelter the Cosmic Line. Well, I have it on good authority that my Iron Line needs some protection of a certain sort.”

He waited until I replied, “Most just say Star.” He raised his mug once more. Sizing me up and liking what he saw, “Fancy a trip to England after this Gathering?” I nodded. I could see Mr. Apple behind the King. He had his walking cane resting on Payne’s shoulder.

Protect the Lines. Follow the Crows. They will lead you to the Morrigan.

She is older than most know.

No one else reacted so that meant the message was for me alone. Elias rose and his corgis followed. He came over and sat beside me. I spoke first, “I hope you grow that beard back sir. More fitting to your style.” His laughter filled the meeting room. He rested an arm on the table. J’dax tapped the table to get my attention, “I know we ask a whole lot of you already kiddo. But any idea who housed the hate?” I thought back. My brow furrowed as I concentrated. “It felt like it came from X’mil but I don’t think it was him. At least not directly. He probably has sleepers in his group. Or even agents. Like what happened at Trinity.”

Mom remembered that all too well.

Striker Nix and the young Typherian officer who was compromised.

J’dax’s face was sour. “Figures. I’ll inform Judgement. Eliza, is there anything else you can tell us?”

White roared to the forefront of my mind. Her tone was colder than space itself.

There are 5 husks of corruption within the minds and hearts of those who serve the Hidden. Betrayers all.

I hissed as the pressure built to near unbearable and shut my eyes tight against her rage. Mom sprang to her feet as Doc rested her fingers on my spine. The sudden absence of pain brought tears of relief. If this was White acting lowkey then I shuddered to think what my belt would be at when commanding full power. “Five Children of Chains are counted with X’mil’s group. I can’t tell more than that because my source wants to remain hidden.”

Diamonds nodded. Her eyes gentle and knowing.

“We understand. I will consult my better half.”

Mom exited the room with Diamonds.

*****

J’ino walked next to her mother. M’taris’ stride was fast. As this ship had been manufactured within one of their most secure shipyards, her husband V’alkor had hidden a special room within it. Eliza wouldn’t have access until later but the Queen made her way there now. Her daughter on her heels. J’ino pointed out, >>It was the White who knew, wasn’t it?<<

The Queen nodded in response.

>>Yes and it will still be a while before Eliza will be able to wield its power properly but it will work in the end. A way to help her. Your father has seen it within the depths of the Throne.<<

J’ino mumbled, subdued by the weight of it all, >>You and papa knew. What would be asked of my twins?<<

As they reached the hidden room she turned and hugged J’ino fiercely, >>We have always known. V’alkor and I are co-joined by other versions of ourselves across the Multiverse. We have observed many variations. We didn’t want you to worry as much.<<

J’ino rubbed at the sudden wetness on her cheeks.

Her mother continued, >>We wanted to give you those years of joy. What parent wouldn’t do that for their children?<<

*****

This special brew of the King’s was excellent. I wasn’t quite drunk but it tasted just pleasant enough to warm me within. His corgis took turns sitting in my lap. Doc had taken the receiver from my belt. Put it on and gave each dog a very welcoming pat. Through the device, I could almost feel how soft they were. White apologized for her outburst. Knowing that she had to be careful. I retorted, It’s alright. One day I'll be able to do all that for myself.

The White filled my mind with a solid promise. I’d be able to do many things to help others. We just had to get past the cocoon stage as she put it. My brother and the Black had the advantage of growing up within the Weave together. No need to mask their power signature because its nature was different from hers. One slumbered in the Weave while she had to remold me from within. At one point she even stated that’s why my Typherian spinal nodes had been granted to my brother. Why she transferred my Markers to Lorain. That was a new bit of information. So we had been tied to our Belts since birth.

When I probed further the only other response I got:

When the time comes, you will have more than you ever bargained for, but I will be with you. No matter the darkness. No matter the pain. We will move together.

*****

Lorain rolled over onto her side. Eliza was floating above her. Sleep made her face look even younger within the semi-darkness of the sleeping quarters. Augustus was snoring softly. His little legs kicking the Doctor’s back as he barked in his sleep. Lanis heard a faint thud as Murphy hit the top of the Captain’s cabin. Still slumbering away. Both still wore their respective sensory devices from Gulliver. It was the only way to get Eliza to rest nowadays. Doc’s mind was filled to the brim with ideas so there wasn’t anything she could do to turn her brain off for now.

She knew that if her heart started racing that would rouse her captain so she kept some soft music playing within the background of her HUD. Eddie sent an update:

///We still have some upgrades to run so we have to stay aboard the Jupiter for now.///

Lanis knew what that indicated. M’taris Ayeer would be remaining on board until the threat passed. She wished she could keep Eliza protected as well but her Captain insisted on patrolling as normal. Having the Banner in attendance was a needed morale booster. Her mind agreed but her heart wanted her captain safe.

No, if she was completely honest: She wanted things to stay nice and quiet for once. Her face heated as she thought of other things she wanted to do but pushed those aspects further into a private corner of her mind. That would be for later. For now, she would prioritize healing Cornfed. Cooper padded in silently and jumped onto the bed. Did his whole circling ritual. To Bardaxians it was a way to keep out evil spirits. To curl into a nice circle like the Ouroborous Chain.

His nose was hidden behind his fluffy tail. <

She prayed. Hoping that all the hosts of heaven would give some of their strength.

*****

Unlike most times I was within the Weave with Dexter this time I could hear the Black stating, “I know the transformation isn’t pleasant but I will echo my Twin’s promise when you can properly feel again, it will be on a whole other level. Have patience.” I nodded. My brother added, “I’ve seen some of what might happen. Grandfather Wolf will explain more soon. I can see why they are only giving stuff out in pieces. One: Operational Security and two: it’s a whole lot to take in. Believe me.”

I had no reason to doubt. Life just found a way to surprise me constantly.

*****

Doc woke with a slight jerk. She was tangled in the sheets. Augustus whined while Cooper barked at Eliza, who opened her eyes. He was floating above Lanis. His tail swishing back and forth excitedly. Murphy rubbed her face and ran a hand gingerly across the German Shepherd’s spine. “Ok! I’m up!” He grinned that canine smile of his.<>

Jupiter’s soothing voice echoed throughout, ((Captain to report to A51. Be in proper demi attire upon arrival. Golden Bulleteer has security updates.))

Lorain pulled on her demi suit. Flashing a smile as she completed the ensemble with her signature dynamo mask. Blowing Eliza a kiss as she left. Murphy had a goofy expression on her face. Even if their relationship was evolving she still found herself amazed by how “In charge” Lanis could be one moment. The next? A woman on a mission to watch every soap opera known to exist in the Terran Alliance. Gulliver poked his head in after waiting for the most opportune time to proclaim, “For your 3rd date, I do have a recommendation.” His wings flapped as he positioned himself on the desk. Eliza smiled as she finished fastening the cape along her back. “And that would be?”

He gave her a set of coordinates. “When things calm down. GO here. You won’t regret it!”

It had been two days since my grandmother’s official arrival. Still nothing from the Cabal. If I had to throw a theory out, they were waiting for the Children of Chains to launch as well. Multi prong attack. Dad agreed. King Payne was added to the roster of the Situation Room. Along with his Corgis. The look on Hilary’s face was such that Lorain had covertly recorded it. Karma in action as she put it. Little John barked at me. Spinning in circles. His little paws in the air with a begging position at the ready. I took some cheddar and plopped it into his awaiting mouth. His nubby tail wigged. One man was containing his laughter when alarms blared and the whole room went dark.

Thoth’s face materialized on every screen with the facility. My father and I stood. I examined the sounds coming from the message while dad scanned it via his bracers. Everyone else remained silent. Thoth’s mocking tenor stated, “Dear Humanity. I am currently relaying this message across the whole entirety of your pitiful Terran holdings. Believe me when I say you aren’t worth the rock you were born on.” My ears picked up the echo within the message. He wasn’t in space. I focused on expanding my hearing outward. He was within Area 51 itself. Human side. He was using one of the conference rooms on the first level. I relayed this to my father and Golden Bulleteer via encoded channels.

I picked up two other groups moving in. I could tell because their heart rates weren’t elevated like everyone else on the human side. Their emotions were cold and calculated but unlike Chronos, they were laced with greed. One group was heading to the Intelligence hub. The other was heading towards the VIP section. Probably to get hostages. The entire facility went into lockdown.

The red haze of emergency lights flashed as various security teams mobilized to combat the Cabal. I tested the door. It was sealed tight. I was here as myself. If I did anything else it would be a clear giveaway to Hilary Brookes.

Besides myself, Lorain, my father, Payne, the President, and Brookes the only others in the room were the Corgis. Dad was in the same boat. I updated my team and the Golden Bulleteer on the situation. We would need a plan. But how to do it without alerting Bookes to my Banner self.

Lorain let Auggie down.

His paws hit the floor and he sped off into the corner. His nose working overtime.

*****

Little John barked at the Genius dubbed Augustus. Their eyes gleamed. Their humans were in trouble. Auggie put his nose to the ground and sniffed. Testing the air and finding a small shaft to wiggle into. He barked to the King’s Guardians. The other 5 followed the smarter pack leaders to the opening. Raising a ruckus to catch the attention of their two-footed peoples.

Auggie butted his head against his human’s leg. Lorain knelt and peered into the vent. She motioned for Eliza. Who grinned, “Who’s a group of good boys! You are!” 7 stubby tails wiggled at the happy tone. Elias and my father removed the outer covering of the vent. To add to the illusion. I didn’t know what the British monarch’s demi capabilities were but we all shared that fate. Brookes must not know. Lorain cursed, “My HUD went dark. They cut the facility off. Per S.O.P.” My father’s face went slack for a split second and I moved closer to hide it from the FBI Sourpuss. Payne motioned to Little John, “Go find the Birdy.” He annunciated this very carefully. Auggie’s ears twitched and he followed John into the opening.

From behind we heard movement. Zachary was in the room with us. His face pale. Dad walked over and gripped him by the shoulders, “What’s wrong?” The scion of House Ayeer shivered. “They have my mom.”

Dad turned on his heel. Eyes questing for any other avenue.

Isis’ voice rolled through my mind like a warm wind.

There is a way out.

I went over to Zach. “Is there another way out of here?” He nodded. His voice was very soft, “But you aren’t authorized to go to the Uplifted Side. X’mil warded it using mom’s credentials. He had some forged without people knowing.” I held up a coin. A simple quarter. My eyes locked onto his. I put the coin in his hand. My eyes darting to the vent. Then the main door. Back and forth until Zach shuddered and his eyes flew wide. That’s it.

Make a path for us. Widen something. I thought hard in his direction.

He wrapped his arms around my neck and started bawling. I could tell by his breathing that it was only half faked. He was truly terrified. I focused on our mother’s heartbeat. It was steady for now. Her emotional aura calm. Underlining fear but controlled. She was within the Uplifted side. Trapped somewhere within the Typherian Embassy. I knew that last part because she was sending a coded message to my ivory ring. From dad’s expression, he was getting more information. While Zach covered his metal manipulations via his boisterous cries, I saw Brookes glance at her watch, which made me wonder: What kind of timetable was she waiting for?

I imagine the results would be very disastrous for us if they got what they came for.

*****

X’mil sobbed as the Child of Chains raked its claws lightly on his face. Not quite breaking the skin. “Where is the Ayeer woman? The All-Father demands his blood price. Shall it be you? “ Its hideous face was partially formed through his former head of security’s chest. It’s weezing gurgling laugh chilled the former scientist to the bone. He whimpered as its fetid breath closed in. It motioned to its 4 other members. All formerly X’mil’s security. He nearly fainted as they croaked at one another. Sniffing the air like common animals. They turned as one unit and went off in the direction of the Embassy’s armory. Hoping that J’ino would want to arm herself.

X’mil’s face fell as he curled up into a tight ball.

There would be no forgiveness for him.

They had corrupted everything he ever did.

His courts would condemn him to final death.

In the distance, he could hear the sounds of battle as the King’s Own mobilized to defend the Uplifted portion.

*****

Augustus raced onward. His friends taking turns tracking the Birdy. He knew he could help. Cooper said so and Cooper was the best. Helping him understand his humans and family even better than before. At the end of the vents, they emerged into another hallway. Little John raced to the 4th room. The door swung open and a very pretty lady with Black hair and brown eyes knelt to give John a vigorous squeeze. Her voice was like velvet to the Corgi’s ears.

“Now my merry little men, we must find another before the Dark Knights do!”

Her form faded and another took its place.

The crow landed delicately on Auggie’s head.

His ears flickered. He bounded away. Listening to the music to guide him to his friends.

*****

J’ino raced down the corridors of the Embassy. The criss cross of energy weapons going off in all directions as advanced probes of House Urraden assaulted the Uplifted side. Her heart thudded in her chest. The only thing keeping her sane was the fact that she managed to get her son to safety. She knew that her husband and the rest would keep him safe above all else. J’dax sent a mental call on the family line, >>Q’vera. The Stone is cast. Find the Ticket.<< Which meant that he wanted her to make sure their mother stayed safe. J’ino felt a grim smile pull at her lips. They would deny the Hidden House their matriarch today. And forever.

A low rumbling growl turned to barks of joy as Glaive and the rest of his security team bounded into J’ino. Snoopy and Watson took the lead while the Great Pyrenees and Beouceron guarded the Ambassador’s back. The Jupiter Rising was on complete lockdown. Not even Eliza could get in if she wanted to. J’ino paused as the Emris updated her instead.

<>

She motioned to her Bardaxian security team. They would have to find a way to end the lockdown. She snarled. X’mil was the obvious fall guy as her husband would put it. The pitter patter of multiple paws hitting the floor caused the beagle to scout ahead. He came nose to nose with Augustus. The Corgi barked and ran in circles. A black crow was perched on his back. Snoopy recognized the rest of his escort. He called out, <>

J’ino felt the crow land on her shoulder. It cawed in her ear. Ruffling her hair a bit.

“Found you!” Its voice was elevated.

Augustus and his team barked. J’ino eyed the Lanis family dog and said, “One Bark for Yes. Two for No. Understand?”

One Bark.

Glavie twitched with delight. He motioned for Snoopy to take an extra transmitter and the beagle complied. Nosing it into position around Auggie’s normal tags. It faded from view as it formed into his silver nameplate.

<>

The Lanis family dog was sapient in a way that J’ino knew wasn’t quite normal for his kind. A hideous croaking noise made the Bardaxian Red Defender unleash a barrage of red energies. His white-furred face drew back, fangs bared, his voice rang out <> The Children of Chains hissed in fury. Their misshapen limbs striking the barrier.

J’ino entered the code for the Armory. It whooshed open. She motioned everyone inside and it sealed behind them. Firecracker’s crimson shields faded. He aimed his efforts at reinforcing the room. Glaive tracked through the various weapons. Seeking the hidden pressure plates scattered throughout. Its cover was one of weapons but its true purpose was to form a certain kind of backdoor. The floor trembled as a hidden set of stairs materialized. <> His tone brooked no arguments.

*****

I could hear Augustus. It was coming from under the main wooden table. I motioned to Dad and we moved it out of the way. The others grabbed each side and lifted as well. The floor gave way to reveal shifting panels. Snoopy’s head popped up and he barked. His tail was ramrod strait.<> Mom came into view next and Zach made a beeline to her after thanking me. He had weakened the door enough to make it breachable. Mom has loaded up heavier than most Terran Troopers. She handed me some ordinance and asked me to place it on the doorway. Our ticket out of here. Hilary Brookes sneered. “Oh so now you share weapons huh?” Mom arched an eyebrow. Replying with a cool tone, “This is Earth Tech.” She was right. Solid Terran Alliance Issue.

Even all the Bardaxians and Corgis had something on them from whatever storeroom mom had raided. Firecracker was the last to exit and the floor re-sealed itself. He had two battle armors with him. Using his Red Defender powers he set each suit over in the corner. I motioned to Doc and my Father. “Since you are the most battle-ready.” They grinned and climbed in. They were mobile enough in a pinch and space worthy. Not like those old suits dad wore at the start of his career. Mostly white shells with red stenciling on the shoulders to indicate Terran make and model.

10 mins later everyone was suited up. I looked to my father, “Where to sir?” He motioned to the holographic display, “Let’s go Head Hunting for Mr. Thoth shall we?” King Payne favored a rather curious weapon. It wasn’t a bow and arrow. He smirked as if he heard me as he hefted a rather wicked looking grav beam rifle. Made for mid-range and far range combat. A stately black crow made itself comfortable within his jacket. Its head peeking out and cawing every few minutes. He patted it gently, “For us all.”

I’d have to ask him what he meant later.

In the distance, I could hear the fever pitch of battle.

From demis and people alike. “We better hurry!”

*****

Medusa watched her King smash in another display. She messaged his trembling shoulders, “We already have so much. Chaos reigns here.” He turned and gently removed her scaled hands. “I know my pet but I must have that information about the Void Line. It is key to resurrecting my armies.” So far all he had been able to learn was the possible location of the Fire Line. That would be important later but the hardest one to locate was the Void. He kicked a chair through the wall for good measure. “Let’s see if they hid it within this level 5 area. The one that even the Banner can’t breach. It reeks of my former home anyways.”

*****

The Children of Chains howled. They could feel their Seed Mother. She was calling.

*****

I sneezed violently and dabs of blood-flecked off into my palm. I stopped short as Glaive screamed, <>. Doc knocked me to the floor as they crashed through some wall paneling. Their mouths sucking in air like hyperventilating air balloons. Jaws cracked as their teeth elongated. “Mother…..” Their cry was warbled. I only knew what they said because of my heightened hearing and knowing Void Walker's speech. Payne aimed and fired a precise shot into the lead Chain monster’s mouth. It shrieked in agony and charged. The walls reformed and shot out to trip the rest of them up. Gluing them in place. I could see Zach just beyond my direct line of sight. His brow was streaked with sweat. Everyone else was firing wholesale into the creatures. Even Brookes. She called out, “What else can you do cripple? Just lie there?” She smirked. I thumbed one of the tabs on an incendiary pulse grenade. Not aiming for the entrapped Children of Chains but rather the stairwell just beyond them.

Ra would use the flames to ward the area. Thoth was trying to get to the Muthra level. Whatever was happening to A51 hadn’t disabled magical demis from responding. Not directly. Their senses were still keen. I guess those teleporters Thoth had used were only specifically that. Brookes just chuckled at my ineptness. Dad’s approval washed over me. He knew how hard it was for me to play the part. Ra bowed and we heard footsteps on the stairwell. Thoth slammed his fists on the barrier. He glared at us. “Fine. Have it your way. Damn demis.”

He used a blackened disk with writing on it. Placing it on the wall he abandoned the rest of his raiders to their fate. The Cabal followed their master. The same bald man from before scurried through the portal before it faded.

*****

Karvax snorted, “Well that was anti-climatic! I wanted blood proper. Didn’t even get to punch Golden Dart.” Thoth and the rest of the Cabal gathered around the dais. Madame Mayhem’s gold and silver mask reflected the ghostly light around them.

Thoth stretched, “No matter. I didn’t get away empty handed. He held up a small grav gun. It fit snuggly into his palm. “This can shoot and kill Void Walkers.” He secured it within his vault. “Besides it looks like Ms. Brookes has a fan club.”

They all joined in on his mocking laughter as Madame Mayhem eyed the Mad King from behind her mask.

That wouldn’t do at all.

No one would hurt her love.

*****

Lorain could feel Eliza’s frustration through their Typherian Markers. Even if she wouldn’t admit it openly, her Captain wanted to go out there and defend people. If Brookes wasn’t here…..

Her eyes gleamed. What if Hilary wasn’t conscious? In fact, she eyed the Children of Chains. Time to test the limits of her abilities. The weakest of them twitched and shuddered as Lorain tore through its nervous system. Since it had melded with it’s Typherian host Lorain had a good idea of how to knock it out. Three of them collapsed in a heap. The other two howled with rage. Snapping at the air. Doc felt her lungs burning with the effort of holding that many down. A few more well-placed shots decided the battle. Lorain eyed Hilary. Her common decency winning out. She helped Eliza to her feet.

The Uplifted side was still on lockdown but various forces were calling out an all clear signal as they secured the invading forces.

*****

Hilary was still oozing smug satisfaction. A part of me marveled at it. I checked to make sure I couldn’t sense Thoth or any other disturbances. Horus pinged me. Additional forces had arrived to clear out the Urraden probes and shock troopers. These had been the only Children of Chains. I watched as Dad and Lorain’s battle helms retracted.

With those armors on Lanis was as tall as I was.

Perfect! I leaned in and bestowed a careful kiss on her forehead.

This made Brookes frown. I continued, “Good thing I have such an able Doctor on my team. She can shoot, she can cook and she can patch me up. That’s a rare thing nowadays.” I said this with utter sincerity because it was true.

Lorain’s face didn’t change but it didn’t need to. It was like the sun had risen in the east. Never to set again. Good. I might not have been as on the ball before but I wouldn’t make that mistake again. Hilary’s envy was plain for everyone to see and she stomped ahead of us like a petulant child. I glanced at Payne and saw a very tender look on his face as he gave the crow another quick touch on the head.

So that was his Doc.

I had to remember. When it came to folklore everything and anything could be true.

Dad grinned, “Good thing I have one like that too.”

Mom’s good humor burst to the surface.

*****

Madam Mayhem walked the streets of Old London. White Chapel was as Victorian as the books described it. Londoner’s treasured their history so the heart of Old London was still the same as ever. Big Ben and everything else. New London was the heart of commerce within the modern age. She wasn’t here for modern.

She was here for magic.

Along with the man who wielded Excalibur. With that sword she would kill Thoth.

The trick was finding the man and swaying him to her will.

She smiled at the Bobbies patrolling the streets.

One stopped her and asked, “Passport miss?” She handed it over.

“Enjoy your stay Ms. Bel.” Her sky blue eyes sparkled with false warmth.

I will indeed. She thought drily. To the bitter end.
