The Wolves’ Den

The girl at the door had long black hair and blue eyes that stared expectantly at Dean.

“Excuse me sir?” the girl said, “I was wondering if you’re the new fixer in town.”

“I am,” Dean said, “But I’m not quite open just yet.”

“I’ll pay you double the amount,” the girl blurted out.

“How much do you have on you?” The girl began to rummage through her basket and pulled out an ID. “I have about 30 credits on me currently,” the girl said.

Dean frowned; this world’s currency was universal and was called credits. 30 of them was not that much.

“Whatever,” Dean said as he let the girl transfer 30 credits into his possession, “Come inside and explain what you want.”

The girl cheerfully skipped into the house and took a seat on the couch. “I want you to escort me,” the girl said.

“To where?”

“To my grandma’s house and back.”

“And where is that?” Dean asked.

“It’s just past the forest near the town, it's only a 30-minute walk.” The girl stood up and began to walk out the door. “What are you doing?” she asked.

“What do you mean?”

“Aren’t you going to escort me?” Dean groaned as he stood up and followed the girl.

“C’mon Nancy,” Dean said telepathically.

He followed the girl out the door and through the town.

“By the way,” the girl said, “I never got your name.”

“It’s Jack,” Dean lied.

“Mine’s Blanchette, but my friends call me Red.”

Dean died internally as he heard the name and began to slump over.

-----

After walking for a while, Dean and Red finally reached the woods and began to follow the path to their destination. Dean suspiciously looked around and started to see more and more claw marks, like an animal marking its territory. Dean looked back at Red and saw her skipping along like nothing was wrong.

Dean followed her to her grandmother’s house without any disturbances, it was quiet, too quiet. Red knocked on the door and an old lady opened it. She opened her arms and hugged Red. She then looked at Dean and he felt some sort of killing intent for her. They walked inside and Red introduced Dean. He shook the grandmother’s hand and sat down in the living room.

“I’m gonna go with my grandmother and talk with her,” Red said, “You can stay here if you want.” Red disappeared into her grandmother’s room.

Dean leaned back on the sofa and started to reminisce about his life.

“What are you thinking about?” Nancy asked.

“A movie I used to watch called Terminator.”

“What was it about?”

“Time traveling machines.”

Nancy laughed, “Sounds interesting.”

“Hey, grandma, when were your eyes so big?”

Red then screamed, and Dean rushed towards the room and created a weapon with his gloves. He kicked open the door and saw a wolf ripping off Red’s arm. He lifted the weapon he created, it was an 1887 Winchester bootleg shotgun. He pulled the trigger and shotgun pellets flew at the wolf’s head, blowing it to pieces.

“Nancy!” Dean screamed, “Help Red!” Nancy ran out of the void and started to apply healing magic. Dean chambered another round into his gun as he heard the howls of wolves coming from every direction.

“How’s Red?” Dean asked.

Nancy stood up, “There is no way I can heal her arm.”

“Shit.” Dean walked out of the room quietly and created an ax in his free hand. “Let’s get this show on the road.”

Dean tip-toed into the living room and a wolf crashed through the window, attacking Dean. Dean’s ax sliced the wolf’s arm, and he shot it in the head with his gun. Dean flipped the gun around, pulling the lever and chambering the next round. The ejected 12 gauge shell hit the ground as another wolf crashed into the house. This time it was a lot bigger.

“You gotta be shitting me,” Dean said as he shot his gun at the wolf. It dodged the buckshot and jumped at Dean. Dean rolled out of the way while another wolf crashed into the house. It collided with Dean and tackled him. The wolf swiped its paw at Dean and sliced his arm. Dean swung the ax and slammed it into the wolf, lodging it into its ribcage. The wolf cried in pain and hopped off Dean just as the big wolf launched itself at Dean. Dean jumped over the massive beast and chambered another round. He pulled the trigger and blasted a chunk of flesh off the monster. The wolf with the ax lodged in its ribs attacked Dean again. Dean grabbed a nearby rocking chair and hit the wolf with it. He chambered his last round and caught the ejected one. In Dean’s hand, the ejected shell morphed into a bowie knife and held it in a reverse grip with the shotgun in his other. The wolf lunged at Dean while he slammed the knife in its skull, killing the beast. Dean grabbed the handle of the ax in the wolf and put his foot on the wolf. He ripped the ax out of the wolf’s carcass.

The big wolf stared at Dean as he was heavily breathing.

“I’ve been itching to use a new skill you know,” Dean said. He was now covered in the blood and guts of the wolves that attacked him. The big wolf stared at the red liquid running down Dean’s skull mask. The wolf tilted his head and spoke, “You're enjoying this, aren’t you?”

Dean was surprised that the monster even spoke. Not a lot of monsters could speak, let alone communicate.

“You talk, huh?”

“Why wouldn’t I be able to?”

Dean thought to himself for a second. “You don't strike me as the talking type.”

Dean brought up his gun and shot the wolf in the leg. The wolf collapsed on the ground and started to scream. “You bastard!” it yelled, “You used a petty trick.”

“Dean leaned into the wolf's face and smiled. “And you think I give a shit?”

“Boss, I stabilized Red,” Nancy said as she came running out the bedroom. She looked around and saw all the wolf corpses littering the ground. “Werewolves.”

“I know,” Dean said, The grandma turned into one and attacked her granddaughter.”

“Why is that one alive.” Nancy pointed at the big wolf lying on the ground.

“I was gonna ask it some questions.” Dean turned towards the wolf, “Are there any more of you?”

The wolf turned back into a human and started to cough violently. “You will never get away from Erik Lambert.”

“Thanks for the info, but that didn’t answer my question.” Dean brought his ax down on the werewolf’s leg and sliced it off. The werewolf steamed in pain as blood started to pour out of his leg. “There are too many for you to handle,” the werewolf said.

“Who is Erik Lambert?” Dean asked.

“He’s the big bad wolf.” The werewolf choked on his words and fell lifeless. Just as Dean was about to turn around, a cloud of black and white smoke began to rise from the wolves’ corpses.

“Boss, what is this?” Nancy asked. Before Dean could answer, a screen appeared in front of him.

-The first power The Jack master was death. He controlled the powers that flowed with life and death. Raising an army, The Jack saw that the monsters he made never had any souls. He came up with a way to keep the souls of the fallen while simultaneously making them obey commands. He liked his arm to have personality. After perfecting the skill, he needed a word to rise his soldiers; it was exorior.-

Dean read the message multiple times before closing it. He stared at the wolves' bodies before speaking, “Exorior.”

The black and white smoke enveloped the wolves’ bodies. The wolves’ opened their white eyes and stood up before bowing to Dean. They looked like Nancy before she evolved, covered in a black mist. The big wolf walked towards Dean and bowed as well. “I require a name, your majesty.”

“Dimitri, and call me Boss.”

“As you wish Boss.” The wolves vanished into a black mist and left Nancy and Dean alone.

“What happened?” Dean and Nancy turned around to see Red just waking up. She looked at her arm and then her grandmother and screamed. Dean rushed to her side.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, calm down.”

“What happened?”

“Your grandmother was a werewolf, and she tried to eat you.”

Red looked at her grandmother’s lifeless body and began to cry.

“After crying for a few minutes, Red wiped her tears and stood up. “Who turned my grandmother into that?”

“Some guy named Erik Lambert.”

“Where is he?”

“I have no idea, but I can help you find him.”

“How much do you want?” Red asked.

“Oh, Didn’t you say the escorting would be here and back?” Red smiled as she went to the kitchen and grabbed a couple of kitchen knives.
