Chapter Thirty-two
The door opened, a man and wife stood in the entryway; he was holding a gun while she held a lantern. They stared at the apparition, which had appeared out of the storm, amazed anyone would venture out on this night.

“Good God, get in here,” the man said just as a howl broke through the night.
Slowly, painfully, Silas turned to face the storm’
Standing just in view was a man. He wore a coat and an engineer’s hat; his red eyes watched Silas with jealous hunger, then disappeared back into the storm as quickly as it had arrived.
The man and woman pulled Silas into the house, to the kitchen where they stripped the clothes from him and warmed Silas with the kitchen fire, dry clothes, and coffee.
They had not seen the man Silas now considered his friend. They had not seen Karl, the demon.
