The air was thick with tension as Mila Harrow stared into the reven battlefield orc army assembled before her. Gripping her sword tightly, she glanced over at James, who gave her a grim nod. This was it - the final confrontation.
Mila's piercing green eyes scanned the endless rows of muscular green-skinned warriors, their armor glinting in the sunlight. She could see the bloodlust in their beady eyes as they slammed spears against shields, roaring for battle. Her stomach clenched, knowing that even with her skills, the odds were overwhelmingly against them.
"No matter what happens here today, it's been an honor fighting by your side, James," she said softly.
"The honor's mine, Captain," James replied, hefting his sack of tools. Though clearly nervous facing such a vast horde, his voice was steady.
Mila knew James was no seasoned warrior like herself, but his tireless work ethic and resourcefulness had proven invaluable. The innovative traps and weapons he had crafted had given them a fighting chance. She wished they had an army at their backs rather than just the two of them. But she had vowed to protect this village, no matter the cost.
"For the Dawn Guard!" Mila bellowed, raising her blade as she and James charged forward to meet the sweeping mass of green bodies crashing toward them like a tsunami.
James sprinted forward, his pack loaded with ingenious creations.
The air inside the dome was still, no breeze or motion to stir the air. Yet the smell of ozone filled the air.
The odor of singed hair and burnt flesh fill the air as the first three rows of orcs are vaporized. The scent of smoke and burnt steel fill the air, dissipating as the second and third rows are also vaporized.
The field glowed a shimmering light-blue, like the ozone of an electrical storm.
Mila and James huddled behind the magical shield of energy, watching as waves of orcs hurled spears and axes at them in a barrage of sparks. The shield was holding, but they both knew it wouldn't last long.
"We need to make our move now," Mila said, her voice urgent. "We can't wait for an opportunity that may never come."
James nodded in agreement, his hands already hard at work turning bits of scrap into weapons. He whittled short swords out of wood planks and strung together chains from bits of metal. Within minutes, they had several makeshift weapons that could hopefully give them an edge.
Mila grabbed one of the swords as she darted out from behind the barrier, slashing at any orc in her way. James followed close behind her with his own weapon drawn and ready to fight.
The two warriors battled against the overwhelming odds, pushing forward through sheer willpower and determination. With a few lucky breaks and skillful swordplay on Mila's part, they managed to break through the second line of defense.
The orcs were stunned by their unexpected success - too slow to respond as Mila and James charged onwards towards victory! Finally, after what seemed like hours of fighting, the two emerged triumphant on the other side of the battlefield.
Reaching into his pack, James retrieved what looked like a simple wooden box with a crank handle on the side. But Mila knew this unassuming device projected bolts of lightning when the crank was turned. James "I a small musical box to play a simple toon but as it is unstable it seemed to shoot lightning. Trust me it is is shocking."
Taking up positions inside the magical dome, Mila and James began cranking their lightning casters, sending lethal forks of electricity ripping through the ranks of bellowing orcs. The magic shield faded, but the two continued their coordinated shock attack, bodies convulsing and dropping with every thunderous blast.
Still, it was barely enough to stem the tide. For every charred orc corpse, three more clambered over to take their place. James reached for another gadget, but a hurled axe knocked it from his grasp. They were being overwhelmed.
"Fall back to the cliffs!" Mila shouted over the cacophony. "We'll make our stand there!"
Fighting a desperate rear-guard action, the pair slowly retreated before the endless green onslaught. The battle was frantic, brutal, nightmarish. But they had to buy just a little more time for...
Mila's sword was a blur as she cut down orc after orc, black blood spraying with every lethal swing. But weariness was setting in. Her reflexes were slowing, reactions dulled by the endless exertion. An orcish club glanced off her shoulder, knocking her to one knee.

Sensing her vulnerability, a hulking orc chieftain charged forward, spiked mace held high for the killing blow. Mila braced herself, ready to die on her feet with sword in hand.
Suddenly, a crimson bolt pierced the chieftain's throat. He collapsed, gurgling and thrashing. Mila glanced up to see Leona perched atop the cliffs, bow drawn and eyes fixed along the arrow's shaft. Her deadly accurate shot had saved Mila's life.
The reprieve allowed James to drag Mila back to the cliffside. Rouke and Cassie pulled them up, away from the ravenous horde below. But the orcs were starting to scale the cliffs useing themselves to create a ladder.
"I'll see if I can thin their numbers," James said, assembling another of his devices. This one hurled spinning blades that sliced through orc flesh as if it were parchment. As the deadly discs cut down wave after wave, James turned to Mila with fire in his eyes.
"We end this now."
James turned to Cassie and said, "Stay close to Leona, kiddo. she won't let anything happen to you."
James affixed several small metal discs to his armor with magnets. He handed two more to Mila and Darius. "These will protect you from the brunt of the explosions. Try to get as close as you can to the cave."
Mila steeled herself. This was it. "Give the signal when you're in position."
James and Mila slipped into the chaos of battle, dodging whirling blades and arrows. Step by step they neared the hulking form of Brutus Blackthorn, surrounded by his clones.
With a shout, James activated the discs. A series of deafening explosions rocked the orc lines. Brutus roared in fury as his guards were blown apart.
Mila charged, her sword piercing Brutus' thigh. The orc king bellowed in pain and backhanded her away. But Leona was there, her daggers finding gaps in Brutus' armor.
With a final, desperate swing, Mila's sword took Brutus' head clean off. His body crashed to the ground. The remaining orcs seemed to get more powerful.
James realized that they could slotter them till there arms fell off they needed to get into the cave. In his posket he could feel the crystal from the strange device humming. Then horns rang out in the small canyon. It was the Dawn Guard, they took up flanking positions slowly and methodically with Darius and Duke Ellingtion cordnitating there attacks.
James notice something, it took a moment then he knew how to deal with this. He turned to Mila who was exhausted and deffeted another foe. As the energy from surged to the others there was a moment. A loading time per se. Thartis whispered to Mila to use her voice projection,"They are vurnable when the power spreads just for a moment time your strike to take them then."
James snuck into the cave as the battle continued. He saw another strange device but he was not going to smash this one he had an idea. He took the crystal and shoved it into the device where there was already crystals humming. He carefully he made sure that it would also infuse power. A small prayer came from his lips"Please do not have a surge protector." As it smoked James realized he had to hold it there.
Thoughts of his JR and Dante rang in his head. As the area flashed bright white.
The frenzied Brutas clones explode with gruesome viscera, spraying the surprised Dawn Guard warriors with the foul stuff.
Magic crackling around them as the clones exploded.
The clones' bones and muscles burst from their bodies like a volcano gone berserk.
Mila sank to her knees, the battle finally over. Her armor was dented and splattered with black orc blood. Fresh gashes and bruises covered her body, joining older scars from countless fights. But she had survived.
Darius limped over last, clutching his side where broken ribs protested each breath. Blood dripped from multiple lacerations, turning his tunic crimson. But he had not faltered.
They had endured the endless onslaught. Pushed their weakened bodies past the limits of exhaustion and pain. Refused to yield, even when hope seemed lost. And somehow, emerged triumphant.
The sounds of celebration echoed through the valley. The people were safe. It was worth any price. There would be time to tend their wounds. Time to mourn those lost in battle. But for now, they had won. Against impossible odds, the heroes had carved a victory from the jaws of defeat. Scars and sacrifices accepted, for the good of all.
Mila held a gaze with Leona as cheers erupted around them. The battle was over, but the war was just beginning. Though the orc army lay broken on the valley floor, this was but one horde controlled by Brutus Blackthorn or better yet the horse was the orc chief.
Darius approached, face grim beneath the blood and grime. "We've won this day," he said, "but whatever force is behind this will only grow more ruthless. Our victory will make it more dangerous."
Mila nodded, knowing he spoke the truth. "Then we'll be ready for it," she said, determined in her voice. "Whatever comes, we'll face it together."
Cassie moved among the wounded, using her healing gifts though her own strength was spent. And Leona stood vigil, keen eyes watching for any remaining threats.
They were battered and worn, bearing fresh scars both within and without. But they had faced the storm as one and emerged intact. Now, eyes lifted to the horizon, where future battles awaited. This war was far from over. But they would see it through, to the end. Side by side.
For they were the Dawn Guard, and they would not falter.
Mila started to try to find James Patterson and he was no where to be found. As panic started to surge and the cave that he was trying to reach seemed to have the rock itself charred she feared the worse.
James was found in the corner trying to get up. Mila rushed to his side as he grinned "I shall not die today under any man's persuasion." Mila saw James was hurt and the burn on his left arm was severe. Darius yelled out for Cassie. James went to give Mila a thumbs up but noticed his left hand was gone. "Well that sucks..."
