Chapter 6 – The System
The first day of the system was arguably the most important day of the entire existence of the Tower. Experts had agonised over numerous facets of the system put in place by the Tower but none vexed or obsessed them quite like day zero. The opportunities that Morgan could see were endless.
At first people who entered the Tower seemed to have access to various classes, skills, items and other opportunities completely at random. Humanities infighting for power, position, resources and such promoted an atmosphere of secrecy. Individuals who had amassed great power jealously guarded their secrets and in rare cases shared them with their most trusted allies.
By the time that such wars, crusades and skirmishes had begun to pitter away and slowly powerful groups began to align themselves to a common purpose the survival of humanity many of these opportunities to exploit these secrets had become redundant.
The system put in place while cruel afforded initial opportunities and paths to those who had advantages over others before the system was put in place.
To take the example of a champion body builder their strength stat would reflect their physical prowess and they may be afforded the choice of a class such as brute that could evolve into a berserker. Or after having proved their worth in the Tower they could be afforded the opportunity to compete or dungeon dive for a rare skill such as Silverbacks Rage, one which ignores all damage for 20 seconds.
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
The myriad of opportunities on day one was endless and didn’t only take into account physical attributes. On entering the Tower for the first time all definable and non-definable factors were taken into account by the system and translated into a personally viewable stat sheet. The absolutely middle of the road average human had a stat score, the experts had calculated using advanced algebra, of three in every category.
An increase of one in any stat beyond this point was equivalent to a base increase of 33.33333333% or so that’s what the experts had theorized.
On day one every human on earth was greeted by a welcome screen explaining at least partially what was happening the day the Towers tore through every major city. We were urged to enter the Towers as quickly as possible as their would-be additional boons granted to a select few from each Tower.
Morgan had uncovered later that only 100 boons were given out and only one man who had received this boon had survived past the second floor. That man was Andrew, Morgan couldn’t remember the number of impossible battles they had survived together.
Morgan had been two miles away when the Tower in Washington had hit and had missed out on those boons, he wouldn’t make that mistake again.
