A Brief Respite

A Brief Respite

It’s odd how my wanderings seemed to take ages but only turned out to be brief sojourns, if the position of the sun was any indication. The evening was about to start, but the heat would fool anyone into thinking that it was still afternoon.

I lied on the cool floor, unsure of what to do next. The mystery of how Ka entered my room was like the sky outside; looming and slightly oppressive. A few clouds accompanied that sky, but they were wispy and the wind was blowing strong. They would be carried off to distant lands, leaving me behind to gaze on the lonesome roof of the world.

“Hah, what to do now…” My mind left me after I said those words. It went past the window, past the canopy, and after some time, the clouds were beneath it. It only stopped once it has reached the edge of what was visible to me, the darkest part of the sky that seemed to recede into some sort of endless void even higher than it.

And so there it sat, looking back down at everything that could be seen.

Waiting.

While it waited, I pondered.

The ponderings were small at first, starting with the minutiae of life. Why was the color of my gear red now? Why did my feet smell like stale bread? Did Missfit know I had looked at his tendrils and wondered if I could swing on them? And many other trivial questions that were shelved with either a simple shrug or a yawn.

My ponderings then expanded into questions I had that were never answered. What were these beings, these god-like entities, before they lived here? How powerful were they? What circumstances put them here, in this so-called prison? Is this place really a prison? If this is a prison, then how did I get in? Why was I let in? What am I doing here?

Thinking about it by precedent, mortals that are welcomed with open arms by deities later becomes the puppets of said deities. But what good is a puppet with no pull, no leverage to work with? It didn’t make sense. Everything falls into place, however, if one considers that I was here purely by chance; an accident.

Stolen story; please report.

If so, that changes everything. Assuming the Lady spoke true about this place being a “prison”, my existence here is a wild card. That’d certainly explain the peculiar attitude of the deities I’ve met so far. They were trying to gauge my value as a tool. And there’s only one thing the imprisoned value tools for, and that is to aid their escape.

...

Charming.

TUK!

“...Ow.”

I had carelessly let my head meet a chair.

My mind twitched.

Getting bored of lying down, I stood up and stretched a bit before ultimately settling to sit on the side of my bed that was facing the windows. There, I watched the sun, or rather, the way the sun’s colors blend into the surroundings. It looked odd yet natural at the same time, the way that these taut threads of light entwined every curve and every edge of all that could be seen. It was all-encompassing, yet also far-removed from the world itself. A purity that could only be felt and admired from afar.

“...Now that’s something worth fighting for.” I muttered.

After enjoying the sun’s brilliance for a few more minutes, I closed my eyes and retreated to my bed.

At the same time, my mind stirred from its place high above the sky and began to descend. It greeted the sun, the stars, and the darkness when it passed them. It rolled on the clouds and swam in the breeze, savoring light and embracing warmth. It then passed through the threshold to my room and hovered before me.

“You’re back already? The sun hasn’t set yet, you know.” I stared at my mind with mixed feelings.

“I figured that, with so many things happening recently, you wanted to take a break.”

There was no reply, which was to be expected. It was a figment of my imagination after all; an avatar. It did not speak for there was no need to, and it did not think for there was no desire to.

Not desiring the burden of sentience for the moment, I turned around and pretended to sleep.

My mind remained where it was.

Waiting.
