The Third Wars
There's No Turning Back

There's No Turning Back

Any issues that they could think of have already been solved. Now, the only thing left is to carry out the plan. First, each person takes a handgun of their choosing, and anyone who can handle a rifle picks one up as well.

Chad, Nick, and Neil are among them. Brent also tries to take an AR-15 but is advised against it by both Neil and Chad. They claim it's too risky for someone inexperienced like him, but the real reason is their concern that Brent might turn the weapon on them. To their surprise, Brent agrees.

The ones staying behind feel a bit worried as they watch the squad members excitedly gear up with their new "toys." Some are nervous because they'll be alone for hours, or even days, while others fear this might be the last time they see their friends. After what happened to Sally, they couldn't afford to underestimate the situation any longer. There would be no more chances for mistakes, and once they began their plan, there would be no turning back.

"You want to use my backpack to carry the bomb?" Ben asks, looking at Nick.

"Yes."

"But how? We don't even have a bomb."

"Oh, I forgot to mention this part. The terrorists have a bunch of bombs. We'll steal some, and we need your backpack because we'll be carrying more than one," Neil explains.

"Okay... but..."

"If you're worried about the backpack, I'll buy you a new, better one later," Neil suggests.

"..."

When Ben pulled the zipper on his plain yellow backpack, the contents inside shocked them, despite the backpack itself being nothing special.

"What the hell? Why are there snacks in here? I thought the museum didn't allow people to bring food. And I even thought you brought your backpack to keep books," Neil sighed in disappointment.

"Even worse, why'd you bring Lays? Who the hell wants to eat air?" Chad added.

Roy, standing to the side, noticed something small, square-shaped, with a circular convex line on it, tucked away in one of the pockets inside the backpack. Meanwhile, Ben, who was sweating heavily, was being scrutinized by the others. He decided to pull it out of the backpack.

"What is this?"

"Oh hell no."

"What in the actual fuck..."

Ben pulled out a condom from his backpack. When Neil saw one of his well-behaved, obedient students bring a condom on a school trip, he almost passed out.

"This isn't mine!! Brent told me to buy all this stuff for him, and if I didn't, he'd beat me up! I swear it's not mine!"

"Hey! I told you to keep it a secret!" Brent yelled.

Stolen story; please report.

"Oh, so it's true, huh?"

"Uh... no! I mean... the snacks! Yes, I told him to buy snacks! Only the snacks!"

"You can't hide from it, Brent," Chad commented.

"Dammit!"

"Holy Christ."

"Can we just... forget about this? Isn't the mission more important?" Brent pleads for Neil's forgiveness.

"Fine. We'll talk about this later."

"Sure!" Both Ben and Brent say at the same time.

"Okay, I think we should start now. Are we all set, Chad?"

"Let me check..." Chad takes a moment to look around.

"Yep, we're all set."

"Good, now let's move out. We can't waste another second."

The entire team gave a unified nod and moved toward the back door. As they reached it, Nick began to unlock it, while Chad took one last look around the bar, particularly at Selena. Unbeknownst to him, Selena was quickly approaching. As soon as she reached him, she grabbed his hand and pulled it up near her chest.

"Chad... Good luck... and please don't die."

Instantly, Chad's face turned bright red, completely losing his usual composure.

"Sure, sure, yeah, yeah! HEHEHE..."

But as soon as he saw the sincerity in her eyes, he quickly calmed down, realizing that this wasn't something to joke about. It was serious. Since there would be no turning back once they left to begin their operation, the risk of death was ever-present, with armed terrorists waiting for them.

Selena wasn't flirting; she was bidding him farewell from the heart, like a wife sending her husband off to battle, even though they weren't real lovers... yet. Chad tightly grasped her hands and drew closer, finally understanding the depth of her emotions.

"Don't worry, I will save you, I will save everyone, and I won't die until we're all safe. I promise." Selena's pupils widened as she heard those sweet words, ones she had never heard before, stirring her complex yet deep feelings for Chad. She wanted to say more, to spend more time with him, but ultimately, she felt it was enough.

"I believe in you," Selena said, then retracted her hands, finishing her goodbyes before descending.

"Lucky bastard." Brent whispered.

"Eh hem!" Chad coughed awkwardly, trying to hide his embarrassment.

Everyone had already said their farewells to those staying behind. Neil stepped forward, taking his place by the now-unlocked back door. He grabbed the handle and took a deep breath.

"Has everyone remembered the plan?"

"Yes!" They all exclaimed.

"What are we going to do?"

"We'll get closer to their building to have a look."

"Then we'll sneak inside and pretend to be one of them."

"Next, we'll find and locate the machine."

"Finally, we'll place a timed bomb and get out before it explodes."

Each of them, starting with Chad, explained a portion of the plan in chronological order. After each person spoke, Neil confirmed that no one had missed anything or misinterpreted any part. Everyone now had a clear understanding of the plan. With relief, Neil nodded.

"Remember, once I open this door and we step outside, you'll be putting your lives on the line for millions of people in New York. I cannot guarantee your safety once we're out there. Are you still determined to do this?!"

"Yes!" They shouted without hesitation.

"ARE YOU GUYS READY?!"

"YES!!!"

"...Good. Now, let's go!"

Neil began to turn the handle. In that brief moment, the anxiety levels of everyone shot up, and their hearts raced faster than ever. Despite holding powerful weapons, the fear of what awaited them beyond that door still gripped them.

But they didn't have to wait long. As soon as the door opened, a gust of freezing wind rushed in, sending goosebumps over their skin and frostbite deep into their bones. Even before it truly begins, the mission is already overwhelming and full of challenges, but none of them have chosen to back out. Without thinking, they start moving, one by one, stepping outside.

Mike, Jenny, and Selena watch anxiously, unable to do anything but silently wave, hoping for the best. At the end of the line, Nick grabs the back door handle as soon as everyone is outside and looks back at the three of them.

"Good luck."

"You too." Mike replies.

Nick smiles, then shuts the door. With that, they part ways, each saying their farewells, and the operation begins.
