[

Details:

Subject 3, whose name is Leon Hertzen, and will be referred to that way during the rest of the log, is perceived to be a high quality inclusion into the experiment due to being a medical student with above average grades. Possibly enhancing the speed of medical advancement in the experiment, in the case he doesn’t perish in the process. Another reason why he was added was because he was an avid reader of medical history, which would help him to advance the medical field without too much intervention. Leaon also reads survival guides, Science Fiction and Fantasy novels, which will help him adapt to the experiment. The only flaw that is perceived is that their body is fairly weak for the needed strength standard, which would need to be compensated for.]

[Subject 4]

[All subjects scanned. Will proceed with summoning the most optimal subject. Recreating…]

----------------------------------------

Huh, where am I? Leon looks around, seeing all white. Am I trapped under the snow? No, I don’t feel cold. Weird, and I’m strangely calm. He continues looking around trying to find any marking that would explain where he was.

A humanoid shape suddenly appeared. Sitting on a chair that was invisible due to the whiteness of the room. “Greetings Leon Hertzen. You have been summ-”

“HEY! Who are you, and where the hell am I?!” Leon screams out, the sound somehow echoing even without visible walls.

As the humanoid shape solidifies it becomes apparent that it is a man who looks about 40 years old, his short hair constantly shifting in color, “As I was saying, you were summoned here because you were the best candidate for the experiment. I am the safety administrator who is supposed to make sure that anyone who goes through the process of ‘rebirth’ actually wants to go and is not being just pulled from the timeline.” The man says. The words somehow make Leon even calmer than the room itself.

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

Leon sits down on a chair across from the man, not noticing that he again has a body, still looking around in confusion.”Slow down, experiment, rebirth? So… I’m dead? And, are you god? I mean, me being dead that would make sense, I remember that my car went off the road cus’ of some ice on the road, and partially cus’ I couldn’t see.” He says going deeper into his thoughts.

“Explaining and informing you is why I’m here. No, I am not a god, at least the one you are thinking of, just think of me as a safety arbiter, you may just call me Arbiter. Let’s get to the more important things. The experiment you are being offered to be included in is a so-called low fantasy, the creators want you to help speed up the history progression. More specifically in your field of knowledge, which is to our knowledge medicine. About the ‘rebirth’, you have the option to get reborn into that world, or go there with your current body. There are negatives and positives to both sides but I will go into specifics later.”

“So, if I got this all correctly, I have the chance to go to another world to speed up history? Aaa… and you said low fantasy, mind explaining that more? Will I be able to do magic?” Leon asks excitedly. Already planning things out in his mind.

“Sorry to drag down your expectations, but sadly no” the arbiter replies. “There is a fairly high chance that they will put you there before they turn on the magic functions. You would pretty much be dropped into the time before even things like empires existed. There might be some smaller kingdoms, but nothing the size of for example the Roman Empire.”

Leon suddenly felt exasperated, as all the dreams he just had crashed down as they clashed with reality. ”Really?! Could they not just… Turn on the magic for me?” Leon asks, giving his last hopes.

“Sorry, but no, it's too complex and would require more resources than they are willing to use on you.” Leons hopes once again crashed down, as he even let a tear flow.

“Well, sometimes life just doesn’t want you to have things. or should I say death. Am I dead now? Being a soul or something?”

“By the definition of dead, no you aren’t dead now. But your original did die. And no, we still haven’t confirmed the existence of souls, so we can confidently say you are not one.” The arbiter says.

“Wait, what do you mean by original then? My original body? Did you just take my brain or something? Actually, can you explain how this all works?” Leon asks, feeling more confused the more he thought about it.

“No, explaining everything would take too long. The short of it is that we took what could be approximately called a mold of your brain/body and cast in that mold new biological material. You could be called a copy, as you are not exactly the original, but I’m not crazy enough to get into the philosophy of it all, or any philosophy in fact.” The arbiter calmly answers him, leaving Leon in shock as he just sat there for a minute, processing the information.

“You know what, you are right, no good thinking about it. Let’s just move on.” Leon says, his right eye still twitching a bit from the revelation.”So what are the good and bad sides of rebirth and or just putting me on the planet? The second one seems pretty dangerous considering what kind of viruses and bacteria I could bring along, but I believe you people are smart enough to not miss that part.”

“Yes, that is usually the first thing we make sure to solve. About the rebirth, you would be fitted with nanites that would make sure you lived to the age of 18. After that their efficiency would fall off quickly. Just to mention, they will not be able to save you from decapitations, and/or burning, they will help fix your bones and stop viruses and bacteria from attacking you. The bonus here is that you would be able to learn the language and adapt to the culture would be much easier than in the case of us just putting you down there.

“As for just sending you down there in your body, you would be fitted with advanced nanites, with an added AI you would be able to communicate with. You can store small parts of your memories in it. At least that’s what I’m informed of. I am not fully aware of the capabilities of this package, mostly because the people working on it wanted it classified. The only thing I can be 100% sure of is that they can’t kill you, and will not consume the planet in the case you die, which are the 2 worst possibilities. I was told that there were special features that would be useful, but once again, not sure.” After the arbiter finished explaining, Leon just sat there, contemplating his options.

“Hmmm… Well, I really don’t want to live through being a baby, it feels embarrassing to say the least. But I also see the dangers of the lack of info that the second option gives. Tho’ I still think it would be better for me to be in my body, as you already made it from what I see. Am I right?” Leon asked.

“That is true. Your body is already made, you are currently in a simulated room because it makes it easier and safer to talk to you than to wait for you to perceive the situation in your actual body. This space allows you to adapt to your own body while not putting you in any danger.” The arbiter replies, starting to drum his fingers, probably starting to get bored of the conversation. “I wouldn’t mind you speed up the choice, no matter how much this room gives additional time it still uses it.”

“Allright, allright, I’ll just go with the other option.” Leon replies quickly.

“Perfect. Now, We will drop you off in the relative middle of the eastern continent. Here's a map for reference.” The arbiter says after tapping something on his left arm.

“You can see your future location where the yellow star is. There is fairly little wildlife there, though there are dragons near the volcano. Just don’t go up there. Down the river you will find a human settlement. Fairly normal sized for that age. Well, that’s all. Good luck.” The arbiter says, a smile being visible on his face.

“Allright… Well, send me off or something.” Leon says, suddenly feeling like he missed something. The arbiter gets up and taps the watch like device on his hand and then everything goes dark.

----------------------------------------

Leon wakes up on the edge of a river. Suddenly remembering what he forgot to ask.

“Why didn’t I ask if I could go home?! HOW?!” Leon yells out. startling a few birds off the trees nearby.

[By the 1st law of time control. Humans are not allowed to interact with the past under any circumstances in the fear of creating a paradox or splitting the timeline.] A voice says.

“What, who are you? Where?” Leon says after getting up and looking around the area.

[I am P.A.I., a Personal Assistance Intelligence. I was created for the purpose of informing the holder of the Biology Augmentation System, also known as B.A.S., of its functions. I also possess knowledge of all laws under the Central Space Government.] Pai says.

“Well, great. Now I’m even more confused. You know what? I’m deciding to just go with the flow, I’m at least good at that.” Leon says, starting to walk down the river.
