Boss Renji

I was right most of the time, but just a few times I wouldn’t have minded being wrong. I had thought that the Uchiha investigators would be a pain in my ass and by the looks of it, they were well underway. Our spies had detected one of the investigators meeting with Fuji, that useless nephew of Kuro. Unfortunately, the people I had hired to watch Fuji weren't exactly the brightest of the bunch. They seemed to be at a loss for words as they stared at each other with open mouths.

I resisted the urge to throw something from my desk as I told them to get out before slumping back into my chair. I sighed as I sank back into my seat. I had already known that there’d be trouble when the Uchiha police force got involved in the incident. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why they were involved with Kuro’s murder investigation. Then again, as influential as I was in this town, I wasn’t privy to the dark secrets and schemes of the ninja world.

There was something strange about Kuro’s organisation’s accounts that was still bothering me. For the past few months, Kuro had been diverting a huge quantity of his organisation’s resources somewhere. Even his top lieutenants had been unaware as to the reason why. They’d gotten nothing out of Kuro except some vague guarantees that their organisation would grow stronger. Kuro might have finally chewed off something he couldn’t swallow with some foreign shinobi and gotten himself killed in the process.

If that was indeed the case, the fact that I was tipped off and took action based on that could make me look like an accomplice of whatever scary organisation Kuro was associating himself with in his lust for more power. In any case, I needed to look more closely at what Kuro was doing in the months leading up to his death. Ignorance was definitely not bliss in this case. I needed to be prepared for whatever that was coming.

I exhaled as I tried to clear my mind and focus on the job at hand. Boss Renji had sent a carriage to bring me to his place. Considering what he paid last time, I could probably settle my debt with Old lady Matsumoto in a couple of months. I was growing fond of the silver fox as well. “Who are the investigators? Are they from this city?” I asked, trying to keep my tone as neutral as possible.

“No, they’re two ninjas from the hidden leaf village. From the Uchiha police force to be exact, If they do come around, just tell Matsumoto san to stick to the truth. That she has no idea about who it was that killed Kuro. Matsumoto san is intelligent enough to understand this without being told, but give her a heads up anyway” he said.

I nodded with a smile while my insides were roiling.
