A little girl in need

A little girl in need

In a small two bedroom apartment, there were two people having a heated argument that dared to turn violent.

One, a young woman barely in her twenties looked worn and tired. The light in her eye’s seemed to dim the longer she conversed with the person in front of her.The bags under her eye's as well as her jaded expression seemed to age her twenty odd years.

The other, a disheveled looking man in his late thirties. His hair was askew and could be seen thinning, making his forehead rather large. Missing a front tooth he was yelling at the women, spreading his foul breath which reeked of alcohol.

In the living room sitting quietly on the floor, playing with building blocks was a small girl a little older than five. As if used to all the yelling, the little girl just kept quiet and tried her hardest to block out the incessant fighting of her parents, whom were in the kitchen. From the age of the little girl, one could tell that the mother and father had an inappropriate relationship before she was born.

As the yelling and screaming intensified the little girl, as if on cue, got up and went to her room, closing the door behind her. The room itself was rather small, only big enough to fit a bed, nightstand and a desk alongside a chair. A small closet held a handful of outfits, but most notable were the small amount of rather peculiar toys at the bottom. Peculiar not in the sense of an odd doll here or there, but in fact that they were hand made. In fact the only store bought toy were those building blocks she left in the living room.

Her mother got them for her when her father disappeared on one of his bender's a few weeks back. In fact the reason her parents seemed to be fighting was, because he had just gotten back tonight.

The little girl walked towards her bed and started to lay down when a loud bang was heard. Her parent's were starting to get 'violent' again. She quickly scampered on the bed hiding underneath the covers.

She could handle the yelling, however when they got violent she'd always break down knowing she would look upon her mother with new bruises the next day.

Her eye's began to tear and low sobs could be heard coming from under the blanket. Her mom was her only shining light in her world. In fact the toys in her closet were all made by her. They ranged from dolls hand sewn together to stuffed animals made of yarn. However her favorite was the most unique thing her mother made for her. It was actually the first thing she made for her.

It sat on her nightstand, gleaming a silver sheen as the moonlight hit it. It stood a little less than a foot tall and resembled a teddy bear. The most striking part about it was what it was made out of. It wasn't yarn, wool or any special type of thread. It was made from metal. Metal coat hangers to be exact. Her mother made it for her two years prior when they were living from motel to motel in an attempt to find her father.

*---------------------------------------------------2 years ago--------------------------------------------------------*

The door closed with a satisfying ‘click’ as they got into the motel room. They had just gotten back from the downtown area after the little girl’s doctor appointment. On the way back the little girl spotted other children in a strange store. In the store she saw little kids building their own teddy bear’s.

“Mama, can we get a teddy bear?” The little girl asked her mother.

“Sure, honey. We can pick one from the store tomorrow.”

Surprised by her daughter's sudden request, she decided since her daughter didn’t have any toys and as her birthday just passed that they could splurge a little. ‘Albeit some of the money may have to come from the food budget.’ She thought. However to see her daughter smile she would skip as much meals as needed.

The little girl shook her head. “No, mama ... “ She Turned her head to the side, in attempt to find the right words. “I wanna build a teddy.”

“Hmm” The woman knew that it was ridiculously costly to build a bear at those stores. A thought popped into her head. “Sweetie, how about you let mama make you a teddy, you can even help!” She already had some of the materials with her in case any of the clothes were so worn that they tore. Plus she was rather adept at crafting back in high-school.

“Mm” The little girl nodded enthusiastically in response. “Mommy, can we make him so he can… hmm” Lost for words she made a hugging gesture.

“That sounds good honey.” The women smiled at her child. Searching around the room for something to start as a base, her eye’s met the coat rack. ‘Those hangers would be perfect’ she thought.

Going across the room she grabbed a couple of them, even going so far as taking ones with cloths that were hanging on them.

“If we make him out of these honey, he can hug you as long as you want.”

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

The eye’s of the little girl widened. As if shocked that those hangers could be made into a lovable teddy bear.

Bending and straightening the hangers here and there she made the limbs, head and torso. Using a the last hanger, she straightened it and twisted it along the torso, attaching the limbs and the head.

The little girl watched her mother intently as if what she was watching was magic. By the time her mother was done she was jumping up and down in excitement. The skeleton of the bear was the color of silver, copper and gold, do to the mismatched hangers.

“Mama, it’s amazing!… you’re amazing!” The little girl said with wide sparkling eyes and a smile to match as she ran into her mother's bosom.

“Hehe, sweetie it’s not exactly done yet, I still have to cover the bear so it has soft fur.”

The little girl shakes her head from side to side. “No mama… I want it made of those” She points to hangers.

Her mother was rather surprised that she’d want such an unconventional teddy bear. “Are you sure honey? He won’t be soft and cuddly like the bears you saw today.”

“Mm… he looks wayyyy cooler this way!!” She excitedly says.

Smiling wide at what an odd request her daughter had, she gave in. She truly was a doting parent. “Sure thing sweetie, although it’s going to take us a bit longer to make him. We’ll have to get more hangers.”

“That’s fine mama… it’s more fun this way” She says, once more embracing her mother.

A week later the bear finally came together. It was rather hefty for a teddy bear, but it did look like one. Her daughter got the idea to embed buttons into moth balls as eyes. The moth balls went inside the head to fasten the buttons on his face, also making them movable. Finished the bear had a docile look with a neutral face. In the light it gleamed it’s various colors radiantly.

“Mama, thank you soooo…” She held onto that word till she ran out of breath. Taking a big gulp of air she finished. “much!!!”

*--------------------------------------------------------Present--------------------------------------------------------*

This was her most prized possession. Reminding her of a time where it was just her and her mother, before they found her father. The few things her father got her where tucked away in the back of the closet. She hated her dad, always picking on her mother as soon as he'd return from 'business trips'. Every time he'd get back they'd fight. And she spent her time in her room, under these very covers.

As she slowly let her tears fall on the sheets, whimpering silently to herself, she heard an eerie creaking sound.

Thinking it to be the door, she laid down motionless and steadied her breathing. Her father had often come in her room once he was done with her mother.

She would often try her hardest to flatten herself to the bed in an attempt to hide from him. He’d usually be drunk so he’d rarely think twice to look for her.

But to her dismay, she continued to hear that same eerie creaking sound. Only now she noticed it come from closer than she had originally thought. Silently peeking out from under the covers she met a metallic light that reflected into her eye's. Rubbing her eye's as to adjust to the light, what caught her gaze was something that shocked her.

Making it's way unsteadily across the bed was her prized bear. That very same bear that was made of metal. That eerie screeching sound, was in fact metal moving on metal. She watched wordlessly as the bear made it's way towards her. It would occasionally stumble here or there, or altogether fall down. Though it would strangely still make it's way back to it's feet and attempt to cover the distance between them. "Teddy?" She asked while wiping her still moist eye's and sniffling.

Making it most of the way to her, the bear moved it's head looking straight at her in response. As if struck out of her shock, she amazingly didn't feel afraid, she even got out from under the covers and reached for the bear. After-all, this was the bear she made with her mother, how could it harm her.

The bear was cold to the touch, though that didn't seem to bother her as she was more intrigued on how it was moving. Was it alive?

"Teddy...did you come to life cause you saw i was sad?" the little girl asked inquisitively.

To her amazement the bear slowly nodded in response. Her eye's moistened again as more tears started to fall down her face. She started to hug the metal bear. For being cold to the touch, the girl felt an odd warmth coming from the bear. After a moment the bear started to hug her back. Following that she broke down, crying harder then ever before. She wasn't alone anymore, her teddy was there for her now.
