Chapter One

In the heart of a remote and mist-shrouded valley, nestled amidst towering cliffs and ancient forests, lies the clandestine laboratory of the enigmatic figure known only as the Mad Doctor. The lab itself is a marvel of both artifice and natural integration, seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape while harboring untold wonders within its walls.

As one ventures closer, the air grows heavy with an unsettling aura, a palpable sense of experimentation and forbidden knowledge seems to permeate the very atmosphere. The entrance to the lab is guarded by shimmering iron doors adorned with intricate symbols, a stark warning to any who dare to trespass upon the domain of the Mad Doctor.

Inside, the lab is a labyrinthine maze of corridors and chambers, each filled with the hum of machinery and the crackle of arcane energy. Strange contraptions line the walls, their purpose inscrutable to all but the Doctor himself, while bubbling vats of brightly colored liquids emit noxious fumes that hang heavy in the air. Visitors would have found themselves in a vast atrium bathed in the soft glow of alchemical lanterns and bioluminescent flora. The air is thick with the scent of herbs and arcane reagents, mingling with the faint hum of machinery and the distant chirping of unseen creatures.

The laboratory itself is a labyrinth of interconnected chambers and corridors, each housing a different facet of the Doctor's research and experimentation. Strange contraptions of brass and crystal line the walls, their purpose inscrutable to all but the Doctor himself, while vats of bubbling liquids and crackling energy coils hint at the true depths of his knowledge.

At the heart of the lab stands the Doctor's inner sanctum, a vast chamber filled with towering glass tanks containing the fruits of his twisted experiments. Within these tanks dwell the various creatures that the Doctor has created, each one a marvel of science and sorcery in its own right. A menagerie of fantastical creatures, each more captivating and terrifying than the last. From insectoid monstrosities to chimerae of myth and legend, the creatures are kept in conditions befitting their nature. Suspended in liquid, an assortment of tubes and connections reaching to and stemming from them within the confines of their enclosures.

Crystalline panels change their topography and color to reveal lengthy combinations of symbols and diagrams. A Sight common place to the inhabitants of the glass tanks, who long ago understood their place within this birthplace and tomb. To learn. To survive. Promised to one day be released upon the completion of the Mad Doctors plans, and as part of the initiation of his next project.

As Jake floated within his glass tube, his insectoid form shifted slightly, his mandibles twitching in a subconscious response to the stimuli around him. His body, a hybrid between human and bug, multiple arms, legs, and mantis like pincers firmly restrained. His multi-faceted eyes and new senses acclimated to the low lit laboratory around him. Inside his mind, memories from his previous life as a college athlete on Earth mingled with the knowledge he had gained since his rebirth in this new, strange body.

Am I ever going to get used to this strange body? Looking down at his own insectoid form, he found it strange at just how natural this new form had come to be after a month, especially after the improvised training regimen Jake has created for himself while having free time from the doctors mandatory studies.

May as well get some reps in while reading this mumbo jumbo. Straining against his restraints in consistent repetitive motions as  a way of training in sets, or straining until his new muscles fail to bear any load at all as a means of training until failure. Over the past few weeks that he's been doing this, Jake has noticed a decent increase in his own strength.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

I wonder if these other creatures around me come from Earth too. It doesn't seem anyone of them has done anything similar for any other reason than breaking out. Which of course wouldn't work, the guy's who put us here's a mad scientist. At least I have a leg up on these guys. I don't know what awaits us but if I'm more ready than they are that'll make me feel better.

He continued studying the symbols and diagrams displayed on the crystalline panels, trying to make sense of the intricate patterns and arcane sigils. Though some concepts eluded him, Jake's human intellect grasped the fundamentals of the Mad Doctor's research, allowing him to piece together fragments of understanding from his observations.

If my life didn't depend on learning this I'd like to just talk to someone normal. It's a damn shame none of the other bugs care about making friends. To think the Mad Doctor set up an entire system of communications just for it to go unused. Come to think of it, I don't really care.

He contemplated his given assignments, the quiet bubbling of gases escaping and the labs machinery rumbling was suddenly interrupted by the sound of heavy footsteps echoing through the chamber. Jake's compound eyes fixed on the entrance as the imposing figure of the Mad Doctor strode into view, his presence commanding attention and respect.

The Doctor's voice boomed through the room, reverberating off the walls as he addressed the assembled experiments within their glass enclosures. "My creations," he began, his calm deep voice tinged with a mixture of pride and madness, "the time has come for you to fulfill your purpose. You have been educated, nurtured, and now you shall be unleashed upon the world to thrive and survive."

Jake's antennae twitched with curiosity as he listened to the Doctor's proclamation. What awaited them beyond the confines of the lab? What challenges and dangers lurked in the world outside? A surge of apprehension and excitement coursed through Jake's insectoid form, fueling his determination to face whatever lay ahead.

"As of tomorrow," the Doctor continued, his eyes gleaming with anticipation, "you shall be released into the wilderness, where you will compete and cooperate with one another, each member striving to prove its superiority in the grand tapestry of evolution."

With a final flourish, the Mad Doctor gestured towards the glass tanks, signaling to his creations that their time of confinement was drawing to an end. As the experiments buzzed and chittered with a mixture of excitement and apprehension, Jake's mind raced with thoughts of the adventures and challenges that awaited him in the world beyond the lab.

Tomorrow, he would step into a new chapter of his existence, embracing his new body as the Splitter species, and facing the trials of survival with courage and determination. Jake contemplated the imminent release from the lab, a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions churned within him.

Mixed feelings of excitement and trepidation coursed through Jake's mind as he surveyed the other creations within the lab. Each species and creature possessing its own unique traits and abilities, but beneath the veneer of curiosity and competition lay an undercurrent of uncertainty and wariness. Jake couldn't help but wonder how the interactions between the various species would unfold once they were thrust into the wild.

As he observed the other species, the Scarabian with its formidable carapace and the Mantida with their razor-sharp claws, Jake couldn't shake the nagging feeling of insecurity. Would he be able to compete against creatures bred for combat and survival? Would his own abilities as a Splitter be enough to ensure his continued existence in this new and unpredictable environment?

Amidst the swirling doubts and fears, a spark of determination ignited within Jake's core. He may have been reborn into a strange and unfamiliar body, but he refused to let that define him. With each passing moment, he felt a sense of calm with his fellow creations, experienced given and forged by their confinement as experiments of the Mad Doctor.

As he gazed out at the confines of the lab, Jake resolved to face whatever challenges lay ahead with courage and resilience. Tomorrow would mark the beginning of a new chance to grow and discover. With a deep breath from the oxygen mask attached to his strange new body, Jake steadied himself for the trials to come.

He grew us to just release us to the wilderness and die?
