Prologue

Correna's world ended in a red haze.

She was an average woman, maybe a little more attractive than average, but not a headturner. A woman who barely moved her expression when not given a reason. With dark brown eyes, and skin marked with sun marks. Tan skin that clearly hadn't been in the sun for a long amount of time. She was about five feet six, the average height of woman in the US. Walking in a pants suit, slight heels on her feet, looking every bit of a secretary she wasn't.

Correna moved her shoulder bag further up her shoulder, making sure it wouldn't fall off her shoulder. It contained her computer and multiple important files she would be punished for losing.

She worked for a company as a programmer, enjoying the money but not the workload. She knew what she was getting into when she chose to study Computer Science, but Correna, she never had the passion for it like her coworkers. She only wanted to do something with computers, having no interest in anything else.

At least the job paid well, to Correna's relief. She was by no means a person who hoarded their money, but only spent it on things she truly wanted. And that made her acquaintance's constantly say she had no life. She didn't correct them because they were correct. She never made the effort to make friends, not in college or in the workplace. She only worked for the time she signed on and left work just as quick. She saw no reason to stay longer, even to converse with her coworkers.

That left her with no one, but Correna was comfortable with it. An introvert at heart, she never seeked out the comfort of other people.

But she had empathy, which made her stop and sprint to protect a woman from getting shot.

Correna saw the gun raise from the other side of the street, catching the metallic glint of the weapon from across the street she was on.

It was sunset, the light leaving the surface of the world, and the chill of the autumn air chilled her.

Maybe that wasn't the autumn air, feeling the blood leaving her chest. She didn't feel pain, probably in shock, but red spots flickered in her vision. The woman was panicking above her, holding her up. Correna couldn't hear her, but she smiled all the same. The woman noticed and had tears in her eyes, blood splatter on her face. She was patting Correna's face, frantic, but the red was coming ever so closer.

When the red took over, Correna's last thought was that she never finished her programming project.

The universe will never be the same, for the universe gave Correna a chance.

To be great.
