The next day I woke up with a smile on my face. I was eager to go to school for the first time in a while. That day, I didn’t have history class so I didn’t know if I would see Ava. Still, I hoped I would. After a long time, I thought I had made a friend. When I got out of the house, I saw the cloudy sky and knew it was going to rain soon so I rushed to the train station. I was a bit sleepy so when I got on the train, I fell asleep without wanting to for about eighteen minutes. When I woke up because of the noise, I checked my smart watch and saw there were still three minutes left before I had to get off. The noise that woke me up was caused by some girl who was with one of the popular guys from my school. The one who bumped into me the previous day in the cafeteria. When the train stopped and I got off, for a brief second I saw in the crowd a familiar face, Ava’s face. That’s when I realized she was the girl who was laughing and joking with Ian. My heart ached because I felt betrayed but I said to myself “It wasn’t going to last anyway”. I took a detour route because I didn’t want her to see me and ran through the rain.
That day, the first class I had was geography.
“Today, I’m going to ask you about the capitals of a few countries. Let’s start with a simple one. What’s the capital of Germany? Liam.”
“Berlin.”
“That’s correct, Liam. Thank you.”

“The next one… Let’s say the Netherlands. Isaac, go ahead.”
“Amsterdam, sir.”
“That’s also correct. If I may, why are you so wet? Don’t you commute by train?”
“Yes, but I forgot my umbrella today.”
“That’s unfortunate.”
“Of course he forgot his umbrella. He probably forgot it because he studied too much the other day. How can he remember to take his umbrella if he’s so tired? Look at his face!”
“That’s enough! Isaac, where are you…”
That was the moment when I couldn’t take it anymore. So I ran… I went to the bathroom and wiped my tears. I felt a sorrow I hadn’t felt before. A different but similar feeling to loneliness. It was just deeper. I was already thinking about all the things that happened to me, but when I thought about the glimmer of hope I saw the previous day, the crying only got worse. After quite a few minutes I calmed down. I just sat in a corner and waited… I didn’t want to return to the class. After a few minutes of waiting, I heard the sound of the door opening. I didn’t know who it was, I didn’t care, I just didn’t want to be seen. I thought that if I looked down, I wouldn’t be seen by the other person, but even I knew I was wrong. Surprised, the other one talked to me.
“What are you doing here all alone, silly?”
When I heard that “silly” I knew it was Ava. Even so, I didn’t know if I wanted to look up. I was still feeling betrayed so I didn’t, but it didn’t matter for her. She raised my chin with her slim hand, looked me in the eyes, and said:
“Why are you so upset?”
I looked her back in the eyes but while our eyes were meeting I just remained silent. She sat down next to me and leaned her head on my shoulder.
“You don’t have to talk if you don’t want to… but remember that I’m always here when you do.”
“Thanks.”
