Magic. Thaumaturgy. Witchcraft. It is a phenomenon that goes by many names, and by many more practices, where man and monster both actively change the very fabric of their world to fit their needs and desires. Because of the limitless possibilities such a force is capable of, a committee of regulators and masters named the Circle of Savants was created to administrate any and all practices regarding magic. For as long as sentient life has had access to the arcane, these protectors and practitioners have done what they can to mitigate and nullify the damage wrought by errant mages and unstable abominations. Countless millennium have passed, and while their work is not over, their numbers have begun to dwindle. Magicians have become a dying breed, and the need to propagate what is left has led to many small, personal disasters. This tale's focus lies on one particular man who has suffered at the hands of his particular abilities, and a girl whose origins and talent have brought misery on a life that should have been discarded. Whether they can assist one another, or are ultimately the downfall of their own walks of life, remains to be seen.
