B1 | Chapter 14 - The Pushy Receptionist

Shawn

"...Then he said to..." I hear someone shouting as they pass by my room.

Ugh, people are trying to sleep here!

"Whatever," I mutter before getting up from my bed.

Might as well go get some breakfast.

I reach over to grab my swords and fasten them to my waste before grabbing my mask and heading out of my room.

When I open the door, I am surprised to find the receptionist from the Adventurer's Guild walking down the hallway.

"Oh?" She says when she sees me.

I briefly nod my head to her in greeting before turning to head down the hall towards the common room.

"Wait up!" She calls out from behind me before catching up and saying, "Allow me to join you."

Well so much for eating alone.

"You're the new adventurer who signed up with the Guildmaster yesterday, right?" She asks me as if she doesn't already know the answer.

I faintly nod my head as we reach the stairs down to the common room.

The lady, I think Leah was her name, speeds up to walk in front of me before smiling and saying, "I thought so. You seem interesting, so let's talk over breakfast."

She then spins around and heads over to the bar to order her food.

Pushy much?

I pause to survey the common room.

There appears to be a group of adventurers sharing drinks in the far corner of the room, by the entrance. Meanwhile several other adventurers are all spread across the bar near the stairs to the rooms.

"Hey! You coming?" Leah shouts from her own seat at the bar.

I grunt before making my way to the bar and sitting down next to her.

The barkeep walks up to us and asks, "So Leah, this a friend of yours?"

Leah nods her head and says, "Yeah, he is a new adventurer who just signed up with the Guildmaster last night."

I mentally facepalm at how open she is being.

A couple of the nearby adventurers in the room glance my way before returning to their own conversations.

The barkeep glances at me in surprise as he says, "He is?"

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

He then seems to study my appearance for a few seconds before looking confused and saying, "But he doesn't look new to me. He seems as if he has already had quite a few battles in his life."

I raise an eyebrow, not that they can see it with my mask on, before saying, "I fought in dungeons before becoming an adventurer."

This doesn't seem to surprise the barkeep, or Leah for that matter, as they both nod their heads.

"I'd be more surprised if you hadn't fought in dungeons before becoming an adventurer," Leah says before digging into the food someone just brought out of what I am assuming is the kitchen and placed before her.

When did she even order?

Actually, scratch that.

"Why?" I ask her before telling the barkeep to just get me whatever he recommends.

Leah turns towards me with an 'Are you stupid?' look on her face as she says, "The Guildmaster may be eccentric, but he wouldn't come to the front desk and register just any new adventurer who showed up to register in his office."

I pause for a second before saying, "Oh, yeah. That's probably true."

Leah raises an eyebrow before turning back to her food.

Soon enough, after a few minutes of silence, someone comes out with my food.

"You know, the Guildmaster is not what I was expecting," I say before starting on the food placed in front of me.

Leah laughs before saying, "I know what you mean. It was the same when I met him for the first time."

I turn towards her and ask, "Oh? And how may I ask did you meet him?"

She turns towards me for a second before looking at her food again as she says, "I was transferred over to this Guild branch from the branch on the Isle of Spring Leaves. He apparently makes it his duty to meet every new employee at his branch whenever they transfer or are hired, so he met with me the day I transferred."

"Really? How did that go?" I ask while hiding a smirk under my mask.

Leah turns towards me again and squints her eyes before turning back to her food and saying, "Well, unexpected to say the least. He was the complete opposite of what I had been expecting based off of his reputation."

I turn towards her and stop her there, "Wait, what reputation?"

She looks at me in surprise and says, "Wait, you don't know?"

I shake my head.

"Huh, that's surprising. Anyways, he has 4 stars, so it's normal for him to have a reputation, but his is a little unique. He has another name that people call him, although some could call it a title of sorts," Leah says before pausing.

"What is it?" I ask in curiosity.

"The bloody fairy," Leah finishes before taking a sip of her drink.

I look at her in silence for a few seconds before asking, "You're serious?"

She answers without even looking back at me, "Yep."

"That idio- I mean Guildmaster?" I say, almost calling him an idiot.

She giggles at my slipup before saying, "Yep, apparently he is like an entirely different person when in a battle."

"Must be some transformation for him to get that name," I mutter before finishing my breakfast.

"What do you think..." I hear Amber begin before pausing from the stairs and calling, "Hey, it's Shawn!"

She then walks over towards me with Aldred next to her and asks, "Did you sleep well?"

I nod my head and answer, "Yeah, although someone woke me up while walking by my room and shouting."

"Oh, so you don't normally wake up this early?" Leah asks from beside me, surprising Amber and Aldred who hadn't noticed her yet.

"Leah! Good morning!" Amber says in a happy tone.

"No, I don't normally wake up this early," I mutter before taking a swig of my drink.

The others break out into laugher over my problem.

"What are you guys laughing about?" I hear Josh ask from the stairs.

I turn towards the stairs and find Josh standing there with Elizabeth.

"Nothing important," I say with a glare towards the others.

Not that they could see my glare, what with the mask and all.

Aldred calms everyone down as he says, "Alright, we should begin discussing the quest."
