Chapter 2: A Wolf That Talks

The forest is lively and the air is cool, Randolph and Elara walking silently, pushing through the foliage that littering the forest bed. What in front of them is a world that was both familiar but also foreign, where every rustle of leaves felt bursting with magic and mysteries. Their hearts thumped with a blend of excitement and nervousness, knowing that destiny awaited them past the shadows.

As they pushed deeper into the undergrowth, the duo caught sight of shimmering butterflies flitting about, their wings painted in hues of azure and amber. Randolph and Elara had always been drawn to the forest that bordered their village.

Stories whispered among the townsfolk spoke of enchanting creatures and hidden treasures, but also of daunting challenges that awaited any brave enough to cross its threshold. Today, their curiosity and courageous hearts had finally convinced them to step into that realm, where sunlight danced through the branches above and painted the ground with golden flecks.

“Isn’t it weird Elara?” Randolph speak breaking the silence, “This felt like my eyes is open to something… I don’t know… new?” unsure about what he feels.

“Yeah, I get you brother. I think it’s because of the blessing or something, but we must keep our guard up. This forest can’t be so welcoming to wanderers and we are so deep inside it.” Said Elara, cautioning his brother of the threat that might come if they are careless.

“I know that! Sheesh… Elara, I just want to light up the mood. Why are you so stingy?” complained Randolph.

“Please read the air brother. I don’t want us be caught off guard and get hurt!” said Elara curtly.

As they walking deeper into the captivating forests, the shadows around them warped and twisted, the dense foliage lit by patches of sunlight that peeking through the treetops. It is hard to maintain vigilance because of travelling a long distance, and now they are feeling tired. Then, just when deep thoughts began to cloud their minds, a low growl reverberated through the trees, deep and muffled like distant thunder.

“Did you hear that?” Elara is whispering, her instinct warns her of danger.

“I do,” Randolph replied, the hair on the back of his neck standing on end. “We should be vigilant…”

Abruptly, a massive shape emerged from the shadows of the trees. It is a silver wolf the size of a big carriage, sleek and majestic, and its fur glimmering like stars scattered across a winter night. The creature stepped into view, its piercing blue eyes locking onto theirs, almost as if it could read their very thoughts.

“Fear not, young ones,” the silver wolf said, its voice reverberating with an eerie calm. “I am Reiki, guardian of this forest, and I understand your words.”

Randolph stared, stunned. “A talking wolf? But how?”

“Magic weaves through the fabric of this realm,” Reiki replied, a compassionate glint in his eyes. “And I have chosen to embrace its gift to aid those with noble hearts. I sense great purpose within you, and I offer my help on your journey.”

“Umm… what are you talking about?” Randolph asked, bewildered by what the wolf saying.

Sighing, because of his brother boldness (or foolishness?), Elara then stepped forward, her curiosity overcoming her hesitation. “You’re a guardian, Mr. Wolf? Why would you help us?”

Amused by what he sees, Reiki answered the siblings, “Because I have witnessed the suffering that clouds this forest, and I can feel your determination resonates with my own heart. The curse on the fairy binds us all in shadows. If I can assist in freeing her, I will,” Reiki said, lowering his massive head to their level. “Climb upon my back, and I shall carry you to the cave where your destiny awaits.”

Thoughtfully, the siblings exchanged glances, the choices hanging between them like a swing. They could feel the sincerity in Reiki’s voice and the gravity of their quest anchoring them to an undeniable path.

“Brother, shall we?” said Elara with a questioning look to Randolph.

“Oh well, let me go first!” Randolph bravely steps forward and begin climbing to the enormous wolf’s back. “It’s fine, right Mr. Reiki?”

“That is exactly what I told you to do, human child” Reiki replied with exasperation. “Trust me, I would not do you any harm. And just call me Reiki”

With a shared nod, they climbed onto the warm fur of the silver wolf, feeling both thrilled and comforted by the creature’s enormous presence.

As they rode through the lush landscape, the world around them seemed to come alive in brilliant hues of green and amber. Reiki, a magnificent creature whose presence commanded awe, moved with an unexpected grace that belied his impressive size. His powerful legs propelled him effortlessly through the dappled shades, weaving between ancient trees whose twisted branches whispered tales of old. With every leap over boulders, he seemed to dance upon the earth, his movements as fluid as a gentle breeze stirring the leaves overhead.

As Elara felt herself enveloped by the forest's enchanting beauty, her heart swelled with awe. Each turn of Reiki's strong legs, each rustle of leaves overhead, deepened her enjoyment to the magical landscape surrounding them. She inhaled deeply, savouring the fresh, earthy scent mingled with the sweet perfume of blossoms. The breeze whispers seemed to call to her spirit, urging her to explore further, to discover the hidden secrets and treasures waiting just beyond their path. She barely noticed how the sunlight danced upon her skin, for her thoughts were consumed by the exhilarating sense of adventure that pulsed through her veins.

However, next to her, Randolph was having a different experience entirely. As Reiki galloped, his sturdy body swaying in rhythm with the wolf's movement, Randolph's stomach began to churn. At first, he shook his head, shooing away the unsettling feeling, believing it was merely his nerves. After all, he had always been more at home on solid ground, not bouncing along on the back of a mythical creature through a twisting maze of trees and rocks. The gentle undulations of the path beneath him, which Elara seemed to delight in, only caused his dizziness to intensify.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

"Elara," he called out, his voice betraying the queasiness that had settled within him, "I think… I think I need to stop for a moment." He tried to focus on the lush foliage around him, desperate to redirect his mind to the beauty that captivated his little sister. But the colours began to blur together as the forest swirled in a dizzying dance.

Elara turned, her brow furrowing with concern as she noticed Randolph’s ashen complexion. “Oh no, Randolph! Are you alright?” She couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. She had become so wrapped up in the wonder of their ride that she hadn’t realized her brother’s struggle.

Randolph managed a weak smile, but the effort only aggravated his condition. “I think... I think the movement is getting to me a bit. Just give me a minute.” He clutched the lustrous silvery fur of their mount, trying to steady himself as Reiki slowed, sensing the tension in its rider.

Elara dismounted gracefully, her heart tumbling at the sight of her brother wrestling with embarrassment. “Let’s rest here for a moment,” she said, motioning to a nearby clearing filled with soft moss and wildflowers, where the sunlight fell in gentle rays. "Just breathe, Randolph. I’ll try to find some herb to ease the symptoms.

As they settled into the calm stream, Elara plucked a small cluster of fragrant herbs and handed them to Randolph, hoping to bring him comfort. In moments like this, the forest still thrived with life around them, but for Randolph, some deep breaths were necessary to regain his sense of stability. He focused on the bluish green leaves in his hands, the vivid colours contrasting sharply with his own pale expression.

With time, the gentle caress of the breeze began to ease his queasiness, while Elara’s supporting him with some more fragrant herbs and water. While waiting for Randolph conditions to get better, Elara strikes a conversation with Reiki.

“So uh, Reiki, how do you know about us?” Elara asked while grooming the wolf’s side.

“I was connected to the fairy as a guardian, so what she knows or feels I can somehow know it too, and vice versa. It is hard to explain, so please spare me.” said Reiki with jolly. “And I can use my power to gather information. That’s how I can find you both in this vast forest.”

Sensing that Reiki is in a good mood, she has no intention to sour it with barrages of questions. Instead, she chats lightly with the creature. By then, she realized that trust begin to manifest in her heart. Randolph on the other hand, hold a tree bark tightly with pale face.

After what felt like a thrilling yet swift journey, they finally arrived at the entrance of an imposing cave, its mouth is dark and foreboding. The air shifted around them as they approached, charged with a mixture of dread and chaos. Stalactites hung from the cavernous ceiling like jagged fangs, their icy formations draping the entrance with an ominous atmosphere. Shadows danced along the rocky walls, and an eerie glow emanated from deep within the cave, pulsating softly as if it were a heartbeat, humming to the depths of their curiosity and beckoning them closer.

“Is this it?” Elara breathed, her heart racing.

“Indeed,” Reiki confirmed, gazing into the cavern’s mouth. “What’s inside it is a dungeon, a manifestation of darkness. You must tread carefully and find the dungeon core. You shall destroy it if you wish to free the fairy from the curse.”

“So, the dungeon core is the Heart of the Wicked huh?” mutter Elara.

“Dungeon core,” Randolph swallowed hard, unease settling in his stomach. “How will we know what it looks like?”

The silver wolf seemed to ponder for a moment, then said, “The core should be oval shaped, pulsating with the shadow’s essence. It can only be destroyed by the light you have within.”

“The light we have within?” asked Randolph, unsure about the meaning.

“You both may not noticed, but you have it.” Reiki said, assuring Randolph that was hesitant.

“Well, what can I say…” chimed Elara. “All this happening is so unbelievable. No one going to believe us even if we tell them the story, and honestly, can we even do this?”

“I know, but we have come this far. Let’s just prepare ourselves for what is to come now, Elara.” said Randolph with a heavy mood.

As the siblings prepared to unmount, Reiki reached for something hidden beneath his fur and presented it to them: a rusty sword, its blade dulled yet strangely, it’s still sturdy enough to withstand a worthy battle. “For you, Randolph,” he said gently.

“Woah!” Holding it in his hands, Randolph examined the sword closely, a sense of strength permeating from the sword and stimulating his spirit.

“And for you, Elara,” Reiki added, presenting a withering white twig that shimmered with latent energy. “Those are Seed of Light, not a mere sword or stick. Those will help you connect to the life force of the forest itself. Use it wisely, for it carries the power to manifest your will.”

Elara accepted the twig, her fingers brushing against its fragile form, feeling the current of magic thrum beneath the surface. Confusion flickered between them, why had this formidable creature chosen to help them? Why not simply fight the darkness himself? But there was no time for doubt, and their gratitude overflowed from their hearts.

“Thank you, Reiki.” Elara said, hugging her gift, resolve manifesting within her.

“Now, we part ways,” Reiki said, his tone growing somber. “I cannot follow you inside. There are strong barriers woven around the cave, preventing my entrance. But stay strong, and take it to your heart that you are bolder than you realize.”

Heartbeats thrumming with both fear and gratitude, Randolph and Elara walked toward the cave, their resolve solidifying. With a final, knowing look exchanged with Reiki, the siblings crossed the boundary, stepping into the depths of the unknown.

Standing alone outside the mouth of the cave, Reiki watched them disappear into the darkness, a mixture of pride and worry filling his massive heart. Whether they emerged victorious or not, he hoped they would find the courage to spark the light and break the chains of destiny.

Elara took a cautious step forward, her adventurous spirit ignited by the unfamiliar scenery around her. “Just look at that light,” she exclaimed, pointing toward the mysterious fungus that glow like fireflies caught in an ethereal breeze. “It seems to pulse as though it’s alive. I wonder what secrets lie within?”

Randolph, still recovering from his earlier bout of motion sickness, hesitated a bit. “Elara, are you sure we are in the right path? It looks… well, a bit menacing.” Yet, despite the tremor of unease in his voice, he couldn’t deny the vibrant curiosity that sparked within him. The appeal of the unknown tugged at his adventurous heart.

“Come on, how often do we get to see scenery like this?” Elara replied, her eyes glittering with excitement. “We’ve come this far together brother, you and me. Just think of this as just another adventure we used to have. Besides, we can’t let fear hold us back. We have something we need to protect. Right, brother!?”

Randolph can only smile exasperatedly seeing his sister’s jovial expression, but in his heart, he knows what she said can’t be any more accurate.

As Elara took another step forward, the sound of dripping water echoed softly within the cave, mingling with the hum that seemed to resonate from its depths. She turned to Randolph, who was still uneasy from queasiness. “We can take it slow. I’ll go first, and you can rest here for a while. I promise, if it gets too risky, I’ll go right back.”

“Nope! Not happening. You stick with me!” said Randolph while fixing his grip to the rusty sword. “I won’t let you go alone.”

“Aww… okay.” With a reluctant nod, trying to dampen her rising enthusiasm, Elara followed her brother’s lead. They stepped into the cool darkness, the passageway swallowing them whole as they ventured deeper into the cave’s entrails. The glow intensified, revealing intricate patterns etched into the walls.

The air shifted, cool yet tinged with a strange warmth. As if the cave itself were alive, breathing in a rhythm that matched the pulsing light. Shadows danced around them like playful spirits, and the ground beneath their feet became uneven, leading them down a winding path lit by the luminescent glow that now beckoned them ahead.

Suddenly, the cave opened up into a vast cavern filled with crystalline formations jutting up from the ground, their surfaces glistening like jewels in the enchanting light. The sight took Elara’s breath away, and for a moment, they stood together in awe, the former hesitance washed away by pure wonderment.

“This… this is incredible! Look at all the colors!” Elara gasped, her eyes wide as she stepped further into the chamber, captivated by the kaleidoscope of hues that danced across the walls.

Randolph, gathering his courage, stepped up beside her. “I guess the cave isn’t half bad after all,” he admitted, allowing himself to be swept up in the magical scenery for the moment. The initial queasiness felt miles away, replaced by the thrill of the sighting, and as they explored this magnificent view, they began to discover not just the cave's secrets, but also an understanding for the pleasure of adventure.

In that very moment, surrounded by the brilliant scenery of the cavern, they knew this will be a memory they will cherish forever, a testament to their journey so far and the adventures that waited for those who dared to step into the unknown.
