Chapter 2
Sebastian leaned on the guard rail of the ship he was on, the wind flowed through his somewhat curly blond hair, and over his tanned skin. That last one a benefit of living near the coast. His green eyes stared at the large group of islands in the distance with anticipation. He had finally reached the age of 18 and no longer needed a guardian’s permission to go to the Shattered Isles. Not that most people would want to go there. People were always afraid of things they didn’t understand and not even the people who lived on the islands understood the Shattered Isles.
But despite the danger, Sebastian knew his future was on that island, if that future was a painful death or a shot at true power, he still didn’t know. No one’s future was assured there but Sebastian came anyways, because he had always wanted more. Being an orphan meant that most of what he got was what others didn’t want. Which probably contributed to his extensive history of stealing.
Sebastian looked around on the ship, filled with ship stuff and people. He didn’t know what the “ship stuff” as he put it was, he never had an interest in boats. His attention was drawn to the other passengers and the recruiter. Almost every ship that goes to the Shattered Isles had a recruiter on board, this one was no exception. The recruiter’s job was to sniff out any talent among those who try their luck at the Shattered Isles, which was why Sebastian was on this ship specifically. Not because the recruiter belonged to any notable faction in the Isles, quite the opposite actually. Sebastian had no real interest in joining a faction because he didn’t believe he would show any real potential, and if he didn’t have potential then he’d just be some low-level grunt getting orders he could care less about.
The other passengers however were likely much more interested in joining a faction though. And since no one really knew much about anyone else on board, people would still think of him as competition. The scary part about that is that governments have very little control over what goes on in the Shattered Isles, only the strong could impose any sort of laws or structure in the Isles. Which meant that murder in such an environment wasn’t off-limits. That was the real danger at the moment since many of the monsters in the first few islands could be handled with guns. Sebastian’s first goal was to become a classer, a title that people give to those who are level ten and above and have gained their class.
Sebastian refocused on the island that the ship was heading towards, it looked like a swath of forest filled with pine trees and snow. It was another curiosity of the Shattered Isles, each island’s environment had no correlation to the islands around them or where they were positioned in the world. Thankfully Sebastian had come prepared, much of the camping supplies and weapons he brought were expensive but he worked hard to acquire the money to buy them. By that, he meant he stole a bunch of stuff, but he didn’t really have too much of a choice if he wanted to go to the Isles. Sebastian didn’t have a sponsor who was willing to pay the expenses of keeping him alive. Very few ever did, and none of them would be caught dead on this ship, after all, the recruiter here didn’t belong to anyone special.

Samuel was anxious. His job was to protect his ward, Lady Wixx, he wasn’t supposed to be recruiting some kids. Of course, House Wixx was going through turbulent times, so he had to stretch himself thin to better serve his Lady. Still, the thought of him being separated from Lady Wixx was distressing, even if Noxia was watching over her. After all her powers weren’t very good for protecting herself. He, however, was much better equipped towards keeping her alive.

Samuel’s Insight Skill would allow him to find some information on other people’s Classes, Attributes, Skills, etc. Or at least it could, but his skill level with it is insufficient for some of those things, or on most people. But these kids weren’t nearly strong enough to hide anything from him. He decided to hold off for now though since none of them would have anything interesting to look at for the moment.
Instead, Samuel thought more about his Lady’s predicament. Lady Wixx’s powers were terrifying in their own way, even more so if you knew what they were. Which is why the Wixx family’s political and actual power was beginning to diminish. Other factions were beginning to suspect her abilities and it caused them to form a temporary alliance. One without much cooperation since they all technically hated each other still, but it was enough to cause problems for his Lady. But that’s not why he was on such a weak island, Samuel was here because lady Wixx’s daughter Emelia Wixx had begun to start her own journey in the Shattered Isles and needed someone that Lady Wixx could trust to keep her daughter safe. Or as safe as someone can get in the Shattered Isles. He couldn’t look for anyone already inside the Isles though because everyone there was either already with a faction, scared of Lady Wixx’s powers, or just unfit to guard young Lady Emelia. That left him with looking at those who were trying to come into the Shattered Isles. And of course, none of the other factions wanted him to poach their recruits, so they made it as hard as possible for Samuel to find any potential candidates.
It was incredibly frustrating, Samuel was on his sixteenth trip already and still hadn’t found someone who checked all the boxes. He looked back to the deck of the ship towards the passengers. There were about thirty of them and none of them looked very promising, but he could never be sure about their potential by what they looked like now, what was important was what they looked like when they came out. If they did come out.

Sebastian looked at his status with emotions he couldn’t describe. Sebastian was never much of an emotional person, he always seems to chug along without much enthusiasm for anything, anything except gaining a status that is. And now he had one, he wasn’t sure how he was supposed to feel.

Sebastian kept staring at his screen, all of it was rather underwhelming except for his five unused Attribute Points. He wasn’t sure where to put them, but the Attributes on the right side seemed interesting to him. Could he actually become smarter, was that what they were? Another window came up this time.

Sebastion found the descriptions to be somewhat vague, but it was at least enough to clear up his confusion about the mental, or rather magical Attributes. He wasn’t sure if investing any of his Points into his magical Attributes would be a good idea, so he decided to look into the more physical ones. Sebastion planned on killing most monsters on the first few islands with a gun, so Attributes like Dexterity and Perception stood out the most. He decided he’d put Points into both, but he had five and he wasn’t sure which one should have priority. Dexterity would give him better chances at killing anything but Perception could warn him of danger. Sebastion thought back to the other passengers on the ship and the likelihood of them trying to kill him. He decided to put two points into Dexterity and three into Perception.
What happened next was simply amazing. He felt something that he could only describe as potential build up in him, as if the walls were pushed back and he had more room to grow. And then he did grow. The world around him became more alive as if he had been nearly blind and then given glasses. And his body felt incredible! He felt so much more graceful than before, like his balance was better and he was more sure of where things were.
Either way, it filled Sebastian up with excitement, he had always guessed at how amazing having a status was, but his guesses had been wrong, so wrong. Having a status was a million times better! Sebastian’s emotions then faded to something more manageable as he began to take in his surroundings. The shoreline was covered in smooth stones which faded further away into rocky dirt and then into those snow-covered pine trees he had seen from the ship. Except they were much larger up close than he had imagined, the small ones had to be at least a hundred feet tall and that’s not even including the larger ones further in. Not to mention it was much colder here, the climates seemed to be contained to the islands which meant most of them made no sense considering that the Isles were close to the equator.
Sebastian began to gather his things inside one of those large travel backpacks and walked off into the forest. He made sure to go where the others weren’t but he wasn’t too worried about them at the moment. There was a sort of unspoken rule to not hurt anyone while everyone was still together because then you’d be deemed a little too violent and killed before you could attack anyone else. People would probably wait until the next day before going after anyone, though the chances of someone hunting him became higher as time went on and people became more desperate. Sebastian shuffled his backpack into a more comfortable position and walked off into the snowy forest. He had work to do.
