Chapter 5: Calderon Academy

Chapter 5: Calderon Academy

The carriage rumbled to a stop just outside the grand gates of Calderon Academy. Tobias, Felix, and Elara leaned forward, eyes widening at the sight before them. The academy was a blend of elegance and mystique, towering spires reaching toward the sky, their stone walls etched with intricate carvings of magical symbols and mythical creatures. Vines crawled up the walls, entwining with glowing runes that pulsed faintly as if the very foundation of the academy thrummed with magical energy.

Tobias, ever calm and collected, leaned back, his sharp eyes sweeping over the scene as if committing every detail to memory. Felix, practically vibrating with excitement, grinned so wide his face looked ready to split. “This place—this place is insane! Look at those towers!” he practically shouted, his voice echoing in the courtyard.

Elara crossed her arms, her expression cool and composed, but even she couldn’t completely mask her awe. “It's grand, but let's not lose our heads,” she said with a subtle smirk, her voice tinged with the typical edge she carried.

As they stepped out of the carriage, a large fountain captured their attention, standing proudly in the center of the cobblestone path. Water cascaded from the staff of a towering wizard statue, sparkling as it caught the sunlight. A rainbow formed within the mist, adding an ethereal glow to the scene.

“Man, this place looks like something out of a fantasy,” Felix marveled, his eyes darting from the fountain to the lush gardens that lined the courtyard. “Are we sure we’re not dreaming?”

Tobias smirked, casually slipping his hands into his pockets. “Well, if we are, don’t wake me up.”

Elara raised an eyebrow, but her lips curved into the slightest smile. “It’s certainly something...”

The academy grounds were alive with magic. Marble statues of legendary wizards and magical creatures lined the cobblestone paths. Runic symbols glowed softly beneath their feet, and the air buzzed with an undercurrent of energy—like the academy itself was alive and watching their every move.

They reached the dormitories, where they would be staying. The boys’ dorm stood tall and impressive, a sturdy stone structure with large windows and high, arched ceilings. Across the courtyard, the girls’ dorm mirrored the same elegance, their ivy-covered walls carrying centuries of stories and magic within them.

“This is where we part ways, I guess,” Elara said, glancing toward the girls’ dormitory with her usual composed air.

Felix waved her off, his grin undiminished. “You’ll be fine, Elara. Not like you’re gonna miss us or anything.”

Elara rolled her eyes, her tone dry. “Obviously.”

Tobias, standing a bit off to the side, gave her a wry smile. “This academy’s nothing you can’t handle.”

Elara cast him a sharp glare but didn’t say anything, the corners of her mouth twitching into a faint smirk before she headed off toward the girls' dorm.

Tobias and Felix made their way into the boys’ dorm, ascending a wide spiral staircase to their room. The dorm which they would share was spacious and polished, with high ceilings, wooden floors, and wide windows that overlooked the academy grounds. The beds were large and inviting, while the shelves along the walls were already lined with books and magical trinkets.

Felix immediately flopped onto his bed, arms spread wide. “Now this is what I’m talking about! Way better than those rickety beds back at the orphanage.”

Tobias chuckled softly, placing his bag down. “You’re easily impressed.”

Felix grinned. “And you’re way too calm for someone who’s about to start at the most prestigious magical academy in the kingdom! Lighten up, man. This is the dream.”

Tobias shrugged, a glint of amusement in his eyes. “Let’s just hope it’s not all dreams. Something tells me Calderon’s got its share of nightmares, too.”

Felix’s smile softened, a flicker of thoughtfulness crossing his features. “You think Elara will be alright on her own? We’ve never been apart like this.”

Tobias didn’t hesitate. “Elara? She’s tougher than both of us combined. She’ll be fine.”

With that, they changed into their academy uniforms. The sleek black jackets were tailored to fit perfectly, with high collars and silver buttons that gleamed in the light. The crest of Calderon Academy, a majestic phoenix, was embroidered on the chest, adding a touch of elegance and power to the look. Underneath, they wore crisp white shirts, the collars neatly tucked under the jacket. The pants were equally sharp, made of dark fabric that moved easily with them, completing the uniform's polished and professional appearance.

They made their way to the grand auditorium for the opening ceremony, and as they entered, the sheer size and elegance of the space nearly took their breath away. Chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceiling, casting a warm, golden light over the room. Banners representing different branches of magic adorned the walls, swaying slightly as if charged with energy. Rows upon rows of students filled the auditorium, all dressed in the same striking uniforms, yet each one seemed to radiate their own unique aura of potential and power.

While the male students wore their sleek black jackets with silver buttons, crisp white shirts, and tailored dark pants, the female students had a similar elegance in their attire. They wore the same high-collared black jackets with the shimmering Calderon Academy crest on the chest, and underneath, the same white shirts, but instead of pants, they donned black pleated skirts that reached just above the knee. Some of the girls paired their skirts with black stockings or high socks, adding a subtle, stylish touch to the uniform’s sharp, formal design. The blend of dark and light fabric moved gracefully as they walked, giving the uniform an air of sophistication.

Felix, wide-eyed, leaned over to Tobias. “Look at all these people! Do you think any of them are as strong as Elara?”

Tobias leaned back in his chair, scanning the crowd with his usual calm. “Maybe. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

On the stage, a woman with dark hair streaked with silver stepped forward. Her presence commanded immediate attention, her robes shimmering faintly with magical energy. She stood tall and poised, exuding authority.

The murmurs in the crowd faded as she began to speak. “Welcome to Calderon Academy,” she said, her voice firm and unwavering. “I am Miss Himeko, but you will address me as Madame Principal.”

Her gaze swept across the sea of students, piercing through the tension that had settled over the auditorium. “At Calderon, we do not waste time with trivialities. You are here because you are the best—because you have potential that far exceeds the average mage. But that potential will be tested, refined, and pushed to its limits.”

The room buzzed with a mixture of excitement and nerves, whispers flaring up briefly before being stifled.

“In four weeks,” she continued, her voice rising slightly, “there will be a special exam. This exam is not for the faint-hearted. It is designed to test not only your magical abilities but your intelligence, adaptability, and most importantly—your willpower.”

Felix’s eyes widened. “Special exam? Sounds like it’s going to be intense.”

Tobias remained still, his eyes locked on the stage. “They’re separating the strong from the weak.”

Madame Principal’s expression softened, though her eyes gleamed with intensity. “This exam will push you beyond what you think you’re capable of. There will be no leniency, no second chances. Only those who prove themselves will rise to the top. The rest... well, Calderon is not a place for mediocrity.”

The students exchanged uneasy glances, tension rippling through the room. Felix swallowed hard, glancing at Tobias, who remained as composed as ever.

“You have four weeks to prepare,” Madame Principal stated, her tone leaving no room for doubt. “Take today to explore the academy, forge alliances, and understand that this place is more than just a school. It is where you will either rise as one of the elite—or fade into obscurity.”

She paused, letting the gravity of her words sink in before finishing with a final, cryptic remark. “Trust me—you’re going to need those bonds more than you know.”

The silence that followed her words was thick with tension, the weight of her challenge settling over the students like a heavy cloak. Slowly, the students began to stand, their faces a mixture of determination and fear.

Felix leaned closer to Tobias, his usual grin replaced by a more serious expression. “Well, looks like we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

Tobias smirked, his cool demeanor unchanged. “That’s what we came here for.”

As they filed out of the auditorium, the enormity of the task ahead loomed over them. Calderon Academy wasn’t just a place to learn magic. It was a crucible—where only the strongest would survive.

After leaving the grand auditorium, Felix and Tobias took to exploring the vast expanse of Calderon Academy, marveling at the range of facilities the school had to offer. The academy grounds stretched far beyond what they had initially imagined, and as they ventured further, they were greeted by sights that showcased the blend of both magic and a focus on physical prowess.

Their first stop was the athletic section of the school. A massive basketball court gleamed under the afternoon sun, the polished wooden floor practically glowing. Nearby, there was an equally impressive volleyball court, the nets taut and the lines neatly marked. Tobias raised an eyebrow at the sight of a group of students already gathered at the football field, practicing kicks and maneuvers with a magical ball that seemed to hover and swerve with each strike.

“Man, if I wasn’t so focused on magic, I’d be all over that field,” Felix said with a grin, watching the players.

“Somehow, I don’t think you could sit still long enough for it,” Tobias replied with a smirk.

Felix laughed but quickly pulled Tobias over to another area that caught his eye—a large swimming pool that shimmered with magical runes embedded into the tiles. The water glowed faintly with enchantments, and a few students were already taking laps, the water responding to their strokes with gentle ripples that seemed almost alive.

“This place has everything,” Felix said, shaking his head in disbelief. “I didn’t think they’d have sports on top of all the magic.”

Tobias nodded. “Seems like they’re big on balance here. Magic and physical discipline.”

As they continued, they passed by a massive library, its towering shelves filled with books that looked centuries old. The air around the entrance was thick with a magical hum, as if the knowledge contained within the walls had a life of its own. A large inscription above the door read: “Through Knowledge, Power Flows.”

Felix’s eyes widened. “That’s one library I wouldn’t mind getting lost in.”

Tobias nodded in agreement, but it wasn’t the library that held their attention for long. A little further ahead, they came upon something far more imposing—a colosseum-like structure, massive in size and surrounded by thick stone walls. Armed guards stood at every entrance, their armor bearing the insignia of a powerful guild. The sight of them, along with the magic-infused weapons they carried, made it clear that this place was off-limits for the time being.

“What do you think happens in there?” Felix whispered, a mixture of curiosity and caution in his voice.

Tobias glanced at the armed guards, his instincts telling him to stay away. “Whatever it is, it’s serious. We’d better not stick around.”

They continued their exploration, discovering more hidden corners of the academy that piqued their interest, but eventually, the growling of Felix’s stomach forced them to head to the grand cafeteria.

The cafeteria was as impressive as the rest of the academy, with long tables stretching across the room and an array of food choices that could rival any five-star restaurant. Felix, eager to try something new, ordered a bowl of curry udon, while Tobias opted for a simple beef burger.

As they sat down to eat, Felix took one bite of his curry udon and groaned with delight. “Man, this is so good!”

Tobias took a bite of his burger and nodded, though his thoughts briefly drifted back to Ms. Larkin. “It’s good, but nothing beats Ms. Larkin’s cooking.”

Felix grinned through a mouthful of noodles. “True. There’s just something about home-cooked meals.”

After finishing their food, they resumed their tour of the academy. They passed by enchanted training rooms, sparring arenas, and even a room dedicated to potion brewing. Every corner of Calderon seemed to hide something new and exciting, but before they knew it, the sun had begun to set, casting a golden hue over the academy.

As they walked, Felix, engrossed in a story about something he’d seen earlier, wasn’t paying attention to where he was going. He bumped hard into a bulky, muscular student who was easily a head taller than him. The student glared down at Felix with an expression of annoyance.

“Hey, watch where the hell you’re going, kid,” the student growled, his voice low and threatening.

Felix raised his hands in apology, laughing nervously. “Sorry about that, man. I wasn’t looking.”

The student was still looking at Felix in annoyance. Tobias, sensing the hostility in the air, stepped in. “He said sorry. Let it go.”

The larger student turned his gaze to Tobias, his expression darkening. “Oh? What if I don’t want to let it go? What are you gonna do about it, pipsqueak?”

Tobias met his gaze, his calm demeanor unwavering. “I’m the wrong guy you want to be messing with, pal.”

Almost instantly, Felix felt the mana levels in the air spike. Tobias’s magical aura began to swell, and it was clear that even though he rarely showed it, his power was formidable. The tension between them thickened as the bulky student’s aura flared in response, both forces clashing in an invisible contest of dominance.

Felix swallowed hard, suddenly aware of just how vast the gap was between his own magic and Tobias’s. He could feel the pressure radiating off them both.

Before things could escalate further, an amused voice rang out from the distance. “Ohohoho, now boys, at least wait for the special exam before you start tearing each other apart.”

An elderly man, dressed in the robes of a Calderon Academy teacher, approached them. His eyes gleamed with amusement, but there was an unmistakable edge to his tone. “And I would remind you all that fighting is against school rules. Any violation will be dealt with accordingly.”

Both Tobias and the other student backed down, though neither looked particularly pleased. The bulky student huffed, stepping back with a sneer. “This is not worth my time anyway,” he muttered before walking away.

Tobias didn’t take his eyes off him until he disappeared into the distance.

The elderly teacher chuckled softly. “Best save that energy for the exam, boys. Now, hurry along. It’s almost curfew.”

Felix let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. “What a jerk that guy was,” he muttered as they made their way back to the dorm.

Tobias smirked, his hands slipping back into his pockets. “Yeah, he really was. I was about to kick his ass if that teacher hadn’t shown up.”

Felix snorted, shaking his head. “I could feel your mana from where I was standing. You’re on a different level, man.”

Tobias shrugged, his smirk fading into a more thoughtful expression. “Just don’t underestimate anyone. We’re all here because we’ve got something special.”

They reached their dorm, and after a brief exchange about the day’s events, they prepared for bed. As they settled in, Felix couldn’t help but mutter, “This place is going to be insane, isn’t it?”

Tobias, already lying down, smirked faintly. “You have no idea.”
