The beginning of the world

The beginning of the world

In the beginning, there was only life.

Well, there was nothing alive yet, but Life was there. She was alone and all was empty. Life desired to build a world - but she couldn't do it on her own. She created, then, something alive, which she could do easily. With a simple thought in her mind the four goddesses of nature were born. Luki was the first one, appearing from a fireball. Dree came after, made of stone and earth. Fira was formed out of ice, and then changed to water and clouds, still not quite sure which form she liked the most. Eri was the last one, arriving in a hurricane. Together, the four goddesses made the world we call home and the Creator filled it with life.

But all the living things disappeared as soon as they were born. Nothing lasted much in the new world. Life watched from above, from the Divine Land where she and the others existed, and decided to investigate the reason why her creations were passing away. Down here, surrounded by living things and under the wills of time, she met a stranger. He wandered around the world, above earth and waters, under the touch of sunlight and through the winds. It was Death. Once alive, every single being started a race that lead straight to Death's embrace - and he received them gratefully.

Hurt, Life questioned:

"Why are you doing this?"

"Did you made them?" Death ignored the interrogation and pointed  down. A flower that once had been white was now colored grey and laid weakly over the bright green grass. Death took it in his hands and, with a gentle touch on the petals, it turned into dust. Life watched, hypnotized.

"Yes," she answered quietly, as she saw the dust of what once was alive spread through the air only to rest on the earth again. "I made all of them."

"For me?" Death smiled timidly and something in Life seemed to fall into place. "It's all so beautiful, I don't know why you're giving all of this to me."

"I was not..." Life did not know what to say.

The sadness she felt when arrived on the world was not there anymore. Death had smiled at her, and now he was giggling for the sudden silence that had fallen over the Creator. The sound of his laughter filled Life with a unknown feeling. Time were still young and no one had loved yet. But on that day, in the middle of a garden of living things, looking deep into Death's eyes, Life invented love.

Death, then, joined her in the divine land. The goddesses of nature found him a bit weird, but they had never seen Life so, well, so alive, her energy pulsing always stronger. She seemed determined to create the most beautiful beings, only to give them to her loved one.

Time kept running, and the human race had become sovereign over the other living beings. They no longer accepted the natural boundaries and threatened to destroy the world for trying to bend it to their own wills, forcing nature to obey them. Previewing an eminent destruction, the four goddesses had an idea. They descended to the world and had children with men. Their sons and daughters were born with gifts that connected them to nature, allowing them to control one of the four elements. The new humans could not menace the world anymore, for their vital essence depended directly on the energy of fire, earth, water or air that now ran in their veins. The gifted people spread over the land of Eld, but their lives were still empty and insignificant, making Life feel frustrated with her Creation - they didn't knew love nor anything that lasted.

Death, noticing his love's sorrow, gave her an idea. With rocks from the moon, Life made two more deities - Light and Darkness. Caia, the deity of Light had long white hair, her eyes and wings the same color. The hair and eyes of Burin, the deity of Darkness, were as black as the moonless night. They existed in perfect harmony and equilibrium, because Life made them one for the other - they were made to be lovers. And so they were, inseparable.

Together, Caia and Burin gave the humanity one more gift - souls. Their flesh would no longer be a cage for their existence. Though bodies hardly lasted a century, humans could live forever as spirits if they choose so. From the vacuum of his existence, Death created the Middle, a spiritual dimension between the natural world and the divine land. There lived the spirits that decided to continue their journey after the death of their bodies.

Now humanity had souls. They were able to love, had goodness and wickedness perfectly balanced within their essences. But something was wrong. The living ones liked to vainglory about their good deeds, but did not accept any negative emotions that could appear in their hearts. When Burin, having offered balance to humanity, saw them deny it during all their lives and even when facing Death himself, was enraged. Caia remained at the side of her beloved, equally repudiated by the human's injustice.

At the divine land, a war was fought. A god was wounded - even if accidentally. Since it is impossible to actually kill Death, he fell into a sleep that has lasted for millennia, his consciousness incommunicable somewhere in its sleeping mind. Life, then, became wrath. Her fury would be deadly, if only she was able to kill anything. She was a Creator, and the only one who could end Caia and Burin's existence for good was, now, unable to do so.

Frustrated, Life banished the deities of Light and Darkness from the Divine Land. Burin was the first to fall, her black wings flapping uselessly, unable to break her fall until she hit the ground. In the deepest and darkest of caves, Life imprisoned her. Caia watched from above, tears of despair running down her face as she begged for mercy. The fall of Caia was not as long as that of his beloved, for the divinity of Light landed on her back in the highest of the mountains, her wings camouflaging in the midst of the white snow. One miles away from the other, wounded and, now, trapped.

Life swore that she would only forgive them when Death woke up. And ever since then, the deities have been waiting.
