Walking At Night

A young boy shuffled down the sidewalk on his way home. His head cast downward with a gray hoodie casting a shadow over his face. Thin white speaker cords trailed down his chest to a bulge rising out of his stomach. The scrape of his shoes could be heard along with the faint music of Nu metal could be hard radiating out from his headphones. Darkness reigned supreme except for the brief safe haven of light cast from the street lights hovering above. Eventually, the boy came upon a large brick school that had chains linked across the entrance and plywood covering some windows, other windows had holes smashed them leaving jagged panes while a rare few were left intact. Crossing the rugged stretch of sidewalk in front of the school the boy felt his skin tingle causing bumps to break out and hair raise across his arms and neck.

"What the fuck?" He paused the music and took out one of the headphones while glancing around. He stood under the stray light in front of the school his gaze wandering around the fuzzy surroundings.

"Fucking light" Not being able to see clearly he stepped further along into the darkness still searching for anything out of place. Details slowly emerged as he inched farther away from the light, heard saw great big pine trees in front of the school masking much of the features of the school. Through the branches, a light could be seen glowing from an unbroken window on the third story.

"Yeah, no fucking way am I checking that out ha ha ha" He began walking faster with a slight stumble as the sidewalk was raised up from tree roots. Only the noise of the wind through the trees could be heard as he reached the far side of the school, along with the way he felt unseen eyes roaming upon his back causing him to glance over his shoulder. His eyes widen and beads of sweat formed on his forehead while he picked up speed his pace. In the light he was a few minutes ago a small figure stood. Shrouded in a black fog except for its piercing crimson eyes watching him.

"This can't be happening, This can't be happening. God, please protect me from demons and what ever the fuck that is! Please let me make it home!"

The boy bolted across the sidewalk hoodie coming off revealing long black hair streaming behind him. Making it past the crumbling sidewalk darted onto the asphalt sprinting full bore down the street toward his house. He could still feel the eyes on his back as he ran the feeling slowly getting worse.

pa pa pa...pa pa pa..pa pa pa.

The faint sounds of footsteps could be heard over his heavy breathing his own foot steps as he pounded down on the pavement.

"I can make it. I can make oh God please let me make it!" Rounding the corner of the next street he saw his house with the porch light on, T.V. light could be seen coming from the window of the living room next to the door.

"There it is! Go Go Go faster!"

He made it to the house up to the unlocked door forced it open then slammed it shut engaging the deadbolt while leaning against it.

BANG!

The door caved inward slightly propelling the boy towards the couch while the house rattled.

"What in the" his mom screamed and his dad jumped out of the chair when the boy barged in.

"I made it!" Pushing himself off the ground towards the couch. The door remained intact while his father came running out of his room minute later with his loaded double barrel and the house finished rattling.

"What just happened?" His mother asked standing by the couch after turning the tableside lamp on.

"Shhhh it might be out there"

"What might be out there?" His father whispered as he came out of the room and approached the door.

"I don't know I saw it at the old school, it started chasing me"

"Call the cops Ashley."

They remained watching the door until eventually police lights could be seen flashing red and blue on their window blinds. The police could find no evidence of anything happening except for the ruined door. They ruled it suspicious and told them that they would patrol the area in search of anything out of the ordinary. That night the young boy Stephen search the internet for any clues about the old school. He found an article from the 1970's about how a young boy was found brutally murdered on the third floor, exactly where he noticed that light from the window.
