The Romander Case
Reunion At Last

Reunion At Last

Flint lies lifeless on the ground in his corrupted form. He is surrounded by the dark, empty void. Solemn steps echo through the void. The tall, shadowy humanoid figure approaches Flint, no longer bearing its bag and weapon. It picks up Flint with its arms and carries him through the void.

“Detective, I have placed a great amount of trust in you. I trusted that you would free all those trapped within the facility with the revolver you bear. You have done a phenomenal job.” The figure whispers into his ears. “But, your job is not finished.”

Flint’s body rustles.

“Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light, detective.” The figure whispers into his ear. “Your job is not finished. The world needs a brave detective such as yourself.”

Flint’s body again rustles.

“Detective, you mustn’t leave the world yet. There are people waiting for you to come back home…” the voice whispers. “Detective, rage, rage against the dying of the light. Do not let your life end like this…”

Tears fall from the figure’s eyes and splash onto Flint, like a rain fall. Flint’s body slowly reverts into his, human form.

“Detective….Ronlo, Lily, Sercas, and Serena long for your return. So rage, rage against the dying of the light. It is not your time yet. Return home.”

The outside of the facility is filled with the red and blue glare of multiple police officers. Sercas and Serena are lying down in Sercas’s gray van, tired of the constant interrogations from officers. Sercas spoons Serena, easing her worries.

“Sercas…will…will Flint really be alright?” she asks.

Sercas continues spooning Serena, caressing her face and wiping her tears.

“Serena, it will be okay. Flint is a tough bastard, I assure you.” Sercas reassures her.

They hear someone knocking on their van. Sercas decides to check who it is, leaving Serena there. His eyes widen when he finds President Rogers there.

“Mr. President, what are you doing here?” Sercas asks in disbelief.

“Isn’t a large beacon of light from a government facility worry enough?” he asks back.

“I suppose,” Sercas responds.

“But also, I need to see if Flint has all the information I need.” President Rogers tells him.

Sercas nods and gives him the bag of the evidence he and Serena have collected.

“Good, good.” President Rogers mutters to himself. “Though I do not know how negatively the public will react, this has to be done. Changes have to be made.”

Sercas smiles at President Rogers’s genuine ambitions, despite his usual cynicism towards the government. Sercas and President Rogers’s conversation is interrupted as officers rush towards the entrance. Sercas nudges Serena, who gets up. Sercas takes her by the hand and brings her to the location.

The group of officers point their firearms at the shaking door. The door slowly opens. Flint limps out of the door, in a disheveled state. Sercas and Serena rush up to the officers. They cannot believe who they see.

“FLINT!” they both exclaim.

Sercas and Serena rush up to Flint and hug him tightly. Though caught off guard and overwhelmed by their affection, he returns the favor and hugs them back tightly. President Rogers approaches from behind, motioning the officers to lower their weapons. They eventually release from their hug as the President approaches them.

“He’s gone, Mr. President.” Flint tells him.

President Rogers nods.

“Well Mr. Detective, I thank you for your service.” President Rogers tells him.

President Rogers reaches his hand to him, and Flint gives a firm handshake.

“Your payment will be wired to your account. We will handle the rest here.” President Rogers tells him. “Besides, I assume you would like to go home after all of this.”

Flint’s eyes perk up at the mention of his home.

“Sercas, I need you to take me to my house. Now.” Flint tells him.

Sercas nods and motions to Serena. The three of them rush to the gray van. Flint gets into the driver’s seat and starts the van. The three of them drive out of the facility, leaving President Rogers and the officers to handle the rest.

Ronlo stands in front of the door of his home, tightly holding the pendant Lily had made for them in his hands. Lily is in her room, sleeping soundly.

“Your husband has taken on a case of great magnitude. I cannot guarantee that he will return home alive. If this happens, I will compensate you in any way necessary.”

Those words from President Rogers echo through his head.

“Please Flint…please be okay…” Ronlo mutters.

Ronlo jitters as he stands there. Tears stream down his face, unable to think of more hopeful thoughts. Then, he hears the door unlock. He looks up as the door opens. Flint limps into his home, finding his beloved husband, Ronlo, waiting for him. They slowly approach each other, their eyes full of worry and love. They hug each other tightly.
