Alice woke to the bright god-ray of the sunlight blinding her, on her spot against the wall, breaking her restful sleep with harsh indifference.
Finally with no small amount of whimpering and whining she was awake and ready to tackle the fact she was still in some kind of ruined temple. She was also still in fact some kind of fantasy elf, which did not help her in accepting all that was happening.
But the sound of her stomach growling from the lack of food she found yesterday broke that train of dread.
Yes, the food she did need to find today or she was not going to even have the time to contemplate what happened to her before she starved.
Flipping her gray cloak so it was front-facing again, Alice headed out of the open archway of the temple and outwards to the ruins outside.
She visual scanned the area to see if anything stood out in the ruins now that it was light. What she noticed was what looked like what stores surrounding the temple and around those buildings were dilapidated buildings that looked like houses.
It seems the temple acted as some sort of center of this place if the layout was anything to go by. It might be one of the reasons the temple was the least ruined part of the ruins.
With a small mental map of the ruins now in her brain. Alice decided to head to the houses first to see if she can scavenge anything there before she moved back towards the temple.
The first, house she comes across was not in any livable state, the roof had caved in and the walls were mostly overtaken by the plant life, but she hoped it might have something she could use.
Alice slowly started moving the old roof pieces to see if anything salvageable would lie beneath. And just her luck all she could find was a corroded knife. She could not even tell if it was meant to be some kind of dagger or food tool. But it seemed a safe bet to keep it if any situation called for it, at least until she found a knife in better shape.
That house was bust so she spent the next couple of hours searching the rest of the standing houses in the area. It rewarded her with a book, a blanket, and a bag. She felt it wasn't that great of a hall but she still had the shops to look at before she threw in the towel.
So, she looked through the shops and as to be expected of ruins there was no food to be found. But she did find what looked like the remains of a book store, which she searched for anything in readable condition. This produced only two books before she gave up for the day and headed back to the temple to take stock of everything she had.
Now, her feeling of hunger could not dampen her excitement for the books she collected. She wasn’t able to read the titles because of the decay of them so she didn’t even know if this forest used English but the thought of learning more about this place was too good an idea to let that stop her.
So, when she got to the temple, she pulled out all three books she had and set them on the floor of the temple with the other stuff she had grabbed. She had an old folded-up blanket that would need to be cleaned before use, an old worn backpack, the rusted knife, and her three books.
The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
With them all laid out on the floor she opened the book she found in the house first. Most of the page seemed in unreadable condition but from the pages, she could read it was a foraging guide for the forest. She had a couple of different entries that hopeful she could use to find food around the ruins.
Next, she read the plainer-looking book from the store. It seemed to talk about different deities. But more importantly, it looked like some kind of magic book related to the deities. Alice was almost vibrating at the seams with excitement at the idea of magic. She was a bookworm at heart and as all bookworms know magic is cool as hell. But for the interest of her time, she put the magic book to the side so she could see the other book first before anything else.
The final book looked the oldest of the bunch like it would have been ancient even at the time of the ruin’s active days. What was the weirdest about this book was she couldn’t read it, unlike the other books. She figured her language and the local one must have been the same because of the other two books so maybe this one used some kind of even more ancient language?
But while pondering the books she got the same hunger pains from the morning but worse now because of the day she had experienced. So, the choice of what to do next was taken out of her hands. She needed to use that new forging guidebook to find food, or she would never get sleep on an empty stomach.
While she was grabbing the knife and book on forging something most peculiar happened.
Class of Bookkeeper unlocked
Her vision was overtaken by a game screen…
She was completely taken back, what did this mean? Bookkeeper? Class!?
But as she flooded herself with question upon question, she finally had the realization. Of course, she died, was brought back in a fantasy forest there would be some kind of system. It just fit the genre she thought to herself.
But if there was a system did that mean she was missing out on a whole different aspect of this world. So, without wasting any more time she spoke out loud, “Status.” And a window appeared.
Name: Alice
Race: Elf (Moon Woken)
Class: Bookkeeper
Class Skills:
Faster Reading I (Info: Improves Reading Speed)
Book Repair I (Info: Increased Chance of Saving Books When Repairing)
General Skills:
Forging I (Info: Easier Time Identify and Gathering Plants)
With the appearance of the status screen, Alice just gained a whole lot to unpack. First, she confirmed the changing of her species to that of an elf but what did the Moon Woken portion even mean. Second, she had a class and even skills in said class. Which was about the coolest thing about this new development for her. She could unlock skills based on her class and from the number, after the skill, it looks like the skills had a chance to level up somehow.
But for the millionth time of the day, she realized her growing hunger. So, she closed the window and went towards the outskirt of the ruins to test out the knowledge of the book she found and her now Forging Skill.
With the guidance of the book and her now inherent knowledge of the basic forest plants, Alice managed to gather an assortment of fruits and berries.
Now, back at the temple with a full stomach and a lot to think about Alice got to work testing different things about the system.
From her test, she learned that she did not have to say status out loud as she did the first time. Which for her was a big plus because even though it was cool and extremely helpful it was embarrassing to say out loud even if no one was around.
She also learned that she could change her class if she wanted but at the moment it seemed she only had the Bookkeeper class.
By the time she finished messing with the system, night had fallen, and her yawns became even more frequent in appearance. So, she laid down the old blanket and curled up into her cloak, letting sleep take her.
