Chapter 5: Alone

The forest was silent, the tranquility broken only by the distant rustling of leaves and the soft whisper of the wind through the branches. The night sky, dotted with countless stars, cast a gentle glow through the canopy. Suddenly, a new noise shattered the calm: the harsh crack of branches breaking and the dragging of something heavy across the ground.

Jason awoke to the cold bite of the forest floor against his back, his senses overwhelmed by pain and confusion. He could feel the sharpness of sticks and rocks digging into his skin, each jolt and bump causing waves of agony to ripple through his body. A particularly sharp pain radiated from his calf, and as he glanced down, his breath caught in his throat. The tall, pale creature from earlier had its long, clawed fingers embedded in his leg, dragging him along with a relentless, terrifying grip. Blood oozed from the wound, staining his pant leg and the surrounding ground.

The creature dragged Jason towards a clearing bathed in moonlight. At the center of the glade stood a stone altar, its surface covered in ancient runes and dark symbols. The creature released its grip on Jason's leg and pushed him roughly towards the altar.

Jason stumbled forward, his vision blurring from both pain and fear. He collapsed onto his knees, blood dripping onto the cold stone surface. The creature loomed over him, its gaze fixed on him with an unnerving intensity.

"What the hell is going on?" Jason asked weakly, but his words were swallowed by the oppressive atmosphere.

Jason tried to struggle, but his body was too weak. The woman’s touch seemed to drain him of strength, leaving him lying limply on the altar as she continued her whispered incantations. The shadows around her began to writhe, coiling and twisting with an ominous life of their own.

"Come, friend," Eryndor said, his voice warm with concern. "We have no time to tarry. This place is not safe for mortals."

As Eryndor led Jason away from the altar, the woman’s furious gaze followed them. Her eyes burned with a malevolent intensity, but she remained trapped, unable to move.

Jason followed Eryndor through the trees, their path illuminated by the bard’s magic. The oppressive darkness of the forest seemed to recede in their wake, replaced by a sense of cautious hope.

“What’s your name, friend?” Eryndor asked, glancing at Jason as they moved.

“J-Jason,” he stuttered, still trying to process everything that had just happened.

Eryndor smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Well, Jason, my name is Eryndor Thorne. And I’m afraid we have a long journey ahead of us. But first…”

Jason watched in awe as Eryndor began to play an enchanting melody on his lute. The music filled the forest, and Jason felt a soothing warmth spread through his body. His wounds began to heal, the bleeding slowing, and the bruises on his shoulders and back began to ease.

As they continued their escape, Jason noticed Eryndor glancing at the glowing rectangle above his head.

“What’s that above your head?” Eryndor asked, his gaze flicking upward.

Jason followed his gaze and saw the familiar blue health bar hovering above him. His heart skipped a beat.

“It’s… uh… my healthbar,” Jason explained, unsure how to describe it.

“A healthbar?” Eryndor’s eyes narrowed, full of curiosity. “I’ve never seen anything like it. What does it do?”

“It shows how much health I have left,” Jason replied, trying to keep his explanation simple.

Eryndor’s brow furrowed in thought. “Interesting. I suspect it’s more than just a simple display. It might be related to why you were targeted by that woman and why you’re here.”

Jason looked down at the health bar, its pulsing glow a constant reminder of his vulnerability. The bard’s words echoed in his mind. What was the purpose of this healthbar, and why was it so important to the woman?

For now, though, Jason felt a glimmer of hope with Eryndor by his side. The bard’s presence offered a sense of safety and reassurance in this chaotic world. As they disappeared into the depths of the forest, the woman’s furious gaze was the last thing Jason saw. He knew he’d never forget those piercing blue eyes or the dark power that had nearly consumed him. He glanced at his arm where the woman’s magic had touched him and saw faint, jittering darkness beneath his skin, a reminder of the ritual’s lingering effect.

As Eryndor led Jason through the forest, the darkness seemed to recede, replaced by an air of cautious optimism. The bard's music had soothed Jason's wounds, and his steps grew stronger with each passing moment. The silence between them was comfortable, punctuated only by the soft crunch of leaves beneath their feet.

Eryndor occasionally glanced at Jason's healthbar, his eyes narrowing in thought. "So, Jason, tell me," he said suddenly, "what do you know about this world?"

Jason hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "I don't know much," he admitted. "I was driving with my friends when a flash of light sent us crashing into this forest. We found an ancient temple and...and things got weird."

Eryndor's eyebrow arched. "Weird?"

Jason chuckled wryly. "I think 'weird' is an understatement. We encountered strange creatures, and then this Queen Ashline told us we needed to restore balance to the magic in this world. Something about trials and stuff."

The bard's pace slowed, his gaze fixed on Jason's face. "Queen Ashline, you say? I think I know of whom you speak. She's a powerful figure in this realm. But I'm not sure what she means by 'restoring balance.'"

As they walked, the trees grew taller, their branches tangling above them like a canopy. The air grew thick with an expectant silence, as if the forest itself was listening to their conversation.

Suddenly, a faint rustling sound emerged from the underbrush. Eryndor's hand instinctively went to the hilt of his sword, his eyes scanning the surrounding area.

"What is it?" Jason asked, his heart rate quickening.

Eryndor's gaze locked onto something ahead. "I'm not sure, but I think we're about to find out."

A figure emerged from the trees, its features obscured by the shadows. Jason's healthbar began to pulse with a soft, warning light.

The figure drew closer, its presence radiating an aura of tension. Eryndor's music faltered, his fingers hovering over the lute's strings as he prepared for the unknown. Jason's hand instinctively went to his own neck, where the mysterious amulet hung, its symbol pulsing with a soft, blue light.

The air was heavy with anticipation as the figure stepped into the moonlight, its features illuminated in a flash of clarity.
