According to the codex of the Crusader Order, an institution created by the Holy Alliance of Abrun in order to defeat the so-called forces of evil, working together with demons is punishable by death. But people are still people, even in a world where a person can get tangible rewards for carrying forth the will of the gods. That makes it even worse, actually: just as somebody with personal power can obtain political power, so can somebody with political power obtain personal power. Thanks to a weird quest from his father's past, a greedy baron and a heap of intentionally misinterpreted evidence, Amarion Pozen gets a front row seat to the execution of what was left of his family and tickets to a one-year long tour of the baron's prison. But the gods work in mysterious ways. While the nobles of the Holy Alliance are busy stabbing each other in the back, a civil war is starting in the east, possibly signaling the rise of a new row of tyrants. Between the crusaders, who see the world in black and white, the races of evil, who fight amongst themselves, the unknown threats just beyond the horizon, and a pair of observers even more dangerous than the gods, a new age of strife is bewing. But all that is very far away from Amarion, currently sitting in a poorly designed prison. Or is it?
