Prologue - The Experiment

This is my first novel. I am new to writing and would appreciate every suggestion or comments you have. Pls. feel free to nitpick and tell me if you find anything off putting. Also pls. do tell me the aspects you especially like about it.

He ran through the hallway into the control room assigned for the experiment. Today was an important day – no, today was the most important day of his life. Raman had worked on the scientific theory all his life. He had started working on the theory even before gaining his P.H.D in astrophysics and physics from Princeton. He had sacrificed the comfortable life his multiple degrees could have offered, just for today. He endured all the snide remarks of his relatives for wasting away his life and education on just a theory which could be wrong and not settling for a comfortable seven figures salary.

His theory was based on the hypothesis that there are alternate dimensions present. This was a very popular theory among scientists. But, nobody agreed with Raman’s hypothesis of the existence of souls and that when a person dies, his soul just moves between dimensions and enters a new body. Due to this hypothesis Raman was ridiculed by many of his peers and even his papers were rejected by most of the reputable journals. But, Raman was dead set on proving his theory right. He knew his theory was right ever since the incident from high school. He hadn’t told anybody what had happened, but he still remembered it as if it was yesterday.

Dispelling the stray thoughts, Raman entered the room and focused on the old man sitting on a chair. The man was deeply concentrating on the papers in his hands. This was the man who was responsible for the opportunity Raman was presented today. He was a senior scientist who happened to read Raman’s hypothesis and his research on the topic. Luckily, this senior scientist also happens to be one of the most successful businessman of the world banking on his research on Quantum computers and was the first one to actually produce Quantum computers for actual governmental and Organizational use. The old man named Henry looked up from his papers and gazed at Raman. He then asked in a kindly voice, “Are we ready?” “Yes sir, we are. I have checked all the hardware and conducted physical tests of all the machines. Our software is running perfectly and if all goes like our previous experiments, we will make history. How are the numbers looking in that paper sir?” Raman replied in a nervous and excided tone. He had butterflies from all the anticipation.

Henry, the kindly old man replied in a calm manner, “There is nothing that shouldn’t be here in these numbers. Everything looks good from my end.” He paused and then said “Tell me Raman, what shall we do if the experiment fails? You have put on line all those years behind this experiment, I have put on line and expended my massive fortune behind it. Both of us would be in a royal mess if it fails.” The old man paused again as if thinking for a second and said again – “Well, Whatever happens, at least we tried. It is always better to try and fail then failing to try. At least we won’t regret it and ask ourselves the what if question. At least before dying, I could say that I have tried.” The old man didn’t say anything further and had a look of glaze over his eyes as if reminiscing something.

Raman didn’t reply to the musings and rhetorical questions of the old man. He knew the old man had his own demons to deal with. In all the years of working together he had known what motivated the old man and why the old man believed his theory. Shaking off the thoughts of failures, Raman asked the old man if they could begin with it. The old man replied in affirmative. Raman gave out an announcement on mic for beginning the experiment and started counting down from T-60. T-50. T-40. T-30. T-20. T-10. 9. 8. 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1 and he pressed the button to begin the experiment. The experiment to open a dimensional rift.

As soon as Raman pressed the button, there was no immediate effect or any activity. Then, as if an engine revving up, there was sound from all around the building. This machine was massive and comprises of whole buildings full of machines. It was out of city limits due to the hazard of there being accidents. The machine started making noise at an increasing rate. Suddenly, there was an alert notification flashing on the screen. Something had gone wrong. Raman looked up the notification for finding which area had problem. The problem was in the main core of the machine which was designed in tandem with the old man’s latest Quantum computer to exceed the limits of physics and open up a dimensional rift. Raman wasn’t going to sit back and watch his dream fail before him. Before the old man could protest, he ran out of the door asking the old man to look after the control room. Raman made his way to the core of the machine. Before he could diagnose, there started a whirring sound coming from the core and bright white light coming from the core. And then, there was a huge explosion—Boom!!!--- and then, there was Darkness.
