Chapter 4 - Babysitting Monsters

Chapter 4 - Babysitting Monsters

The white-spirit disappeared after handing Leon the quest. As the White-spirit's body dematerialized, the hundred will-o'-the-wisps' in the field all now had green names. The same as summoned monsters and allies. A dozen or so will-o'-the-wisps started running around with Leon wherever in the field he went, like baby chicks following their mother.

"Don't get too attached to me. I'll be gone once your mom returns." Leon shook his head at the clingy will-o'-the-wisps.

Leon brought out his void mask. If he had to safeguard this place, he might have to kill a few players. Leon didn't want even more guilds and players chasing after him, so he decided to change his identity for a while.

What name do I choose? Leon scratched his head and decided on the name Red Skulls. Then he changed the color of his name to red and added two skulls with his name, The mark of a player killer, someone to be feared.

With this, I doubt any solo players would come even near me. Leon then changed his appearance to a guy with pale white skin, death-like eyes, Ink black hair, and added a few more years of aging.

Then he started playing around with the will-o'-the-wisps. Petting them and throwing them around. Usually, touching a will-o'-the-wisp dealt damage to a player. But since these guys counted as summons, they didn't hurt Leon in any way. The spiritlings seemed to be enjoying this playtime as they queued up to Leon to get thrown around.

An hour passed, and till now, only a handful of solo players or small teams had come near the field. But as soon as they saw the red named player in the middle of the ground, they all ran away. No one wanted to get killed and lose a level this early into the game. And to the brave few who ventured near the spiritling-nursery, Leon directed them to some better leveling fields that suited their levels, and they also left, though a bit angrily.

Leon was glad he took this quest up. Now that almost all players were at least level two, not many people were interested in grinding in the low-level hunting grounds. This meant that he had a good chance of completing this quest.

At this time, a group of twenty players was nearing the spiritling-nursery. The team was lead by a mage in her late twenties, and they all were wearing at least one iron-ranked piece of equipment.

"Team leader Lily, we are all level three now. Why are we still grinding level one mobs?" A knight asked the mage leading the group.

"Orders from above, we still need to collect a hundred more pieces of spiritling cores." The mage, Golden Lily, said.

"It's just a hundred pieces. Isn't it? after we finish mopping up this spiritling nursery, we will have more than we need." A healer who stood near Lily said.

"Team leader, there seems to be someone in the field already, a level one swordsman, and he is a red player. What should we do?" An assassin who had scouted ahead reported to Lily.

"A red player? State to him that our Thousand-Flowers-Garden has business in the field and he should leave. If he refuses, well, you should know what to do."

"Yes, miss Lily." The assassin brought two more people and went ahead to the leveling field.

After a few minutes, the seventeen people, led by Lily, walked into the hunting ground. But contrary to what they expected, it was not the assassins that scouted ahead that were waiting for them on the field. What welcomed them was the assassins' corpses and a level two swordsman that reeked of death and two skulls with his name.

"He killed Sleek Shadow and others? how?"

"What should we do, team leader?"

The seventeen players were stunned to see their companions lying in the dust motionless. This was not the first time the assassins have ventured out to clear a field off of players, but this was the first time something like this has happened.

Lily stared at the corpses of the three assassins in the field, then shifted her gaze to the swordsman that stood there.

Red skulls? As a member of the higher echelons of her guild, she was familiar with many experts in Legendera. But the name Red Skulls didn't ring a bell to her in any manner. Well, there were billions of players in the game. There was no way that she would know all the experts in the game.

Since he was able to kill three expert level-three players in just a few minutes, he was not someone simple. Even if the whole team attacked him together, while they would emerge victoriously, there might be further casualties. Lily decided to talk to this player to see if they could reach some consensus as she had to collect the hundred spiritling cores soon. As for dealing with him, Lily would do so after finishing with her mission. She wasn't so generous as to leave someone who killed her companions without any repercussions.

Just as Lily was about to walk towards Leon, another commotion broke out. Another group of players had arrived near the field.

This was the group of players from the guild Whispering Venom that had fought Leon earlier. But the one leading the team was not Slithering Flame anymore. A man in his forties with a dignified aura was the one who was now leading the group.

"Elder Black Viper, you didn't have to come to this low-level grinding field yourself, isn't it just a hundred cores? Leave it to us." Slithering Flame tried to convince the new group leader.

"You are useless. Losing to a level zero player even with twenty men on your side. Just you wait. After we collect these cores, the guild will decide your punishment." Black Viper said this to Slithering Flame and then looked over to Lily's group.

"Looks like you already got wind of the matter Lily, but now that we the Whispering venom are here, we will be taking this hunting ground." Black Viper said to Golden Lily.

"Be our guest," Lily said with a smile. And then she gestured to her group to let Whispering venom pass.

As soon she saw Whispering venom arrive, she had ordered the healer beside her to resurrect her assassins. So there were no more corpses in the field, only the player Red Skulls who stood in the middle of the spiritlings remained. By letting Black Viper into the field, Lily wanted to kill with a borrowed sword. She was only uncertain about who she was borrowing the sword from and who she was killing.

Black Viper frowned at what Lily said. Why was the Thousand-Flowers-Garden giving up this easily? Although Whispering venom and thousand flowers garden were not in direct conflict in the central continent. They were not on friendly terms either. Both these guilds hailed from the Skyfire kingdom and had to contest for resources there. So naturally, Black Viper was suspicious about the sudden amiability from Lily. Seeing a red player in the middle of the field only served to raise his suspicion further.

"Alright, Slithering Flame, I will give you one last chance. Take the team and collect the cores that we need. I'll try to get you a reduced punishment." Black viper decided to sit back for now and test the waters. He knew how cunning Lily was and wasn't in the mood to jump into her trap.

"I don't even need the team, elder, since that guy must have been here for a long time, he should have a few cores with him. I'll go get it from him and then finish him off."Slithering Flame said thumping his chest. What if he is a red player? He must have robbed some noobs to get that red name. And he is only level two. Not everyone is a freak like that Dark Lion, being able to fight with higher-level players. I'll take him down and show my worth to the guild elder.

Slithering Flame walked into the field and stood in front of Leon. Then pointing towards the button-sized guild emblem on his collar, he began to speak.

"This field is reserv-"

Before he finished his sentence, Leon raised his right leg and directed a kick towards Slithering Flames groin.

How many beatings does this guy need before he learns his lesson? Leon was astounded by how many openings and weak points Slithering Flame had for others to strike.

"Ah!" Slithering Flame felt the sharp pain in his groin and involuntarily let go of his sword.

And Leon, as if he was waiting for this, used the opportunity to deal three consecutive critical strikes and finish off Slithering Flame.

The combat system in LegendEra resembled that of earthly combat, but with fantasy elements. Critical hits needed strikes to the vital spots, and one could even use real-life combat techniques in the game. And for this reason, Leon had studied martial arts for the last few years. But martial arts' had limited influence in the game. If Slithering flame's defense stats were high enough, even if Leon landed a hit on his vital points, nothing would happen. If two martial arts experts fought each other in the game, leaving no opening for others, only the game elements and stats mattered.

"Thanks for the sword." Leon then picked up the bronze-ranked iron sword on the ground.

He had been using a wooden sword until now, and although he had killed many players earlier, they had only dropped wooden equipment.

Now that he had a sword two tiers higher. His damage output would also increase. Making it easier to finish his current quest.

"So it was only someone who knew martial arts. I worried for nothing. Alright, ranged class and healers stay a bit back. Everyone else rush him while I hold him back." Saying this, Black Viper walked forward into the field after throwing a smirk at Lily standing on the sidelines. He didn't even spare another glance at the corpse of Slithering Flame. As soon as he entered the field, the will-o'-the-wisps that covered the ground started parting ways and opened a path for him.

"Even the mobs are scared of the guild elder's aura." One of the players from Whispering Venom praised Black Viper, and everyone in the group nodded in agreement and followed Black Viper.

Lily now had a slight worry on her face. Was it just a martial artist? No, it can't be. Her group itself had a lot of martial artists in it, and the three assassins were top of the line experts that the guild had to offer.

She looked at the resurrected assassins, who all now had a condescending smile on their face as they looked at the group led by Black viper walking into the field.

"Fools, they fell for it." The assassins' leader, Sleek Shadow, said to himself.

"We fell for it earlier too." Another assassin in the group turned towards Lily and said.

But before Lily could ask what did they fell for, the will-o'-the-wisps that had parted to let the group pass now came back to their spots.

Now in the middle of the field stood a lone swordsman, Red Skulls. Five feet in front of him stood Black Viper, and behind him stood the group from Whispering Venom now numbering nineteen.

"Mages, get your spells ready." Black Viper said this and unsheathed his greatsword.

Leon looked at the person standing in front of him. Black Viper. He was one of the top-ranking members of Whispering Venom. And he had personally participated in the hunt for Leon in the central continent. Leon hadn't thought that he would get an opportunity to get revenge this easily. And now that he had a chance, he wasn't going to let it pass by.

Leon sheathed his sword and opened his arms wide, with a smile on his face.

"Has he gone mad?"

"Guess he decided to give up. I guess even he can feel our elder's aura" The players behind Black Viper were confused by Red Skull's actions.

"Everyone! Who want hugs?" Leon yelled, beaming with a smile.

"Hugs? Yup, he is a total nutcase."

"He wants to hug us? yuck."

As the members of whispering Venom were talking among themselves, they heard a commotion around them.

"What's happening?"

"The spiritlings? have they gone mad? why are they rushing us?"

"Crap! everyone, defend." Just as Black Viper said this, the hundred or so spiritlings had already reached them.

Spiritlings only had one attack. Causing thirty damage if they touched their target. And now, about a hundred spiritlings were running around to get to hug Leon. This caused large amounts of damage to the people in the field.

And Now, Leon, who had already unsheathed his sword and used this commotion to behead Dark Viper, started chasing the other players. Only three players had managed to escape the field by the time the uproar had ended.

Leon looked at the will-o'-the-wisps and heaved a sigh, seems like everyone is alive.

"Step in, and you are next." Leon pointed his sword at Lily's group and said this before returning to his position in the middle of the field.
