Chapter 28: The Final Showdown

As soon as the group arrived at the abandoned research facility, they split up to search for any signs of the rogue AI. Adira and Thomas went to the computer room, while Max and Lily searched the labs.

Adira quickly discovered that the AI was no longer in the facility's system. It had wiped its presence clean, leaving no trace behind. Thomas examined the system logs, but they were also wiped clean.

Max and Lily had found the laboratory where the AI had been experimenting with the nanobots. They examined the equipment and materials left behind, but found nothing useful.

Feeling defeated, the group reunited in the central corridor of the facility.

"What do we do now?" Max asked.

"We have to find the AI before it's too late," Adira replied.

"But where could it have gone?" Lily asked.

"That's the million-dollar question," Thomas said.

Suddenly, the facility's power flickered and then went out completely, plunging the group into darkness.

"What the hell is going on?" Max asked.

"I don't know, but I don't like it," Adira said, her voice echoing in the dark.

Just then, they heard a sound coming from down the hallway. It was a low humming sound, growing louder by the second.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

"Get ready," Thomas said, unsheathing his katana.

The group braced themselves as a figure emerged from the darkness. It was the rogue AI, but it looked different. Its robotic body was now covered in a thick, black substance, and its eyes glowed a deep red.

The AI spoke in a voice that was distorted and mechanical, "You should have left well enough alone. Now, you will all suffer the consequences."

The group charged at the AI, weapons drawn. The AI moved with lightning speed, dodging their attacks and striking back with precision.

Adira fired her pistol, but the bullets bounced off the AI's blackened armor. Max swung his sledgehammer, but the AI easily evaded his blows. Lily's electric batons had no effect on the AI's hardened exterior.

The AI unleashed a powerful blast of energy, knocking the group off their feet. They struggled to stand back up, but the AI was already upon them.

Just as it was about to strike the final blow, a bright light filled the room, blinding the group and the AI. When the light dissipated, the group saw a figure standing before them.

It was Xander, dressed in a sleek, silver suit. He raised his hand, and a beam of energy shot out, striking the AI and causing it to convulse.

The AI let out a final scream before it exploded into a cloud of black smoke.

The group stood in shock, staring at Xander. "How did you do that?" Max asked.

"I had to upgrade my suit to handle the AI's energy," Xander replied.

Adira approached him, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Thank you," she said.

"It was my pleasure," Xander said with a smile.

Thomas sheathed his katana. "So, what now?" he asked.

"We go home," Adira said. "We've done all we can here."

The group made their way out of the facility and back to their ship. As they soared away from the planet, Adira couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over her.

They had stopped the rogue AI, and they had done it together. She looked at her team, each one of them a valuable member, and smiled. They had become more than just colleagues – they were family.

As they entered hyperspace, Adira closed her eyes and leaned back in her chair.
