Chapter 1- Waiting for our turn

Chapter 1- Waiting for our turn

1st of August 2021.

The winter had yet to reach its pinnacle, but the cold was already enough to prevent blood from flowing to the tips of my extremities, making it evident that the upcoming winter would be a harsh one.

Yet, for the most part, I felt none of this, too busy trying to control the power of two opposite emotions that decided to run amock within my body, fear and anticipation.

That and a bit of indigestion, I guess. I wonder where the hero's association toilet is, or do they not need to go? Is it a perk of the job?

I wish. That way, my parents won't get annoyed by me for going to the bathroom every time before dinner.

"Ahh... Why did we have to wait so long to unlock our powers? Couldn't we have just done it at home?"

"In theory, anyone over 18 could unlock their powers without waiting for this day. The problem is that it is a felony to do so."

"AH! Screw those bureaucratic asses. They only want us to come here so they can note down our powers and personal information. Will, once we are supers, let's destroy this place!"

"I'm sorry, john, but I'm allergic to that kind of trouble."

"Man up, Will! From today we'll be super! The kind that kids look up to with respect and admiration!"

"Do you know any kid who looks up to terrorists? Also, we won't be heroes until after University."

"I did!"

My childhood friend, John, was always the anti-government guy in our friend group. Even before we knew what a "Government" was, he was already preaching that politicians are blood-sucking vampires.

Only once was there a super with blood manipulation powers in the government, yet somehow it became the spitting image of every politician for people like John.

It ironically goes to show how popular the guy was, I guess.

My mother says that John is like this because of his father. The man got arrested for committing some crime on the front lines.

There are rumors back in the streets that he killed some officer above him, but John thinks otherwise. He believes that he got framed by the government.

Unlike my friend, I believe those rumors. The guy scared me more than any Villain I've ever had the misfortune of seeing in person, even the old guy that lives on my block. That ever-present smile of his still makes me shudder. John somehow saw warmth in it tough.

Luckily, John didn't grow up to be totally like his old man, just a little on the dumb and extremist side but still way more likable than his father ever managed to be.

'Doesn't that make him more dangerous, then?'

A part of me thought that one day I'd have to face my friend as an enemy, but the other part didn't care.

I'm not a Hero yet. It's not within a civilian's responsibility to worry whether or not someone could be dangerous to the government, only to worry about how to survive until adulthood.

I'm sure he's already on some list somewhere, and I'm there, too, by association.

Besides, I won't deny that some of the things he has said, over the years, about our government were on the nose with the reality of our situation.

"What are you thinking about, Will?"

"You."

"I know I'm cute, but I don't swing that way."

"..."

"Neither do I.

I was thinking about which power we'll get."

"Fire and Ice! That way, we can be like that game we used to play when we were younger!"

"You mean fire and water?"

"Nah, water is boring."

"John."

"Yes, Will."

"I. From the bottom of my heart. Wish for you to get water powers."

"Go and respectfully screw yourself, Will."

"Is your mom available?"
