Somewhere in Whites City, New Mexico...

Kaila and Claeg were hunting again, doing their usual routine. They'd find their prey, stalk them, then lure them somewhere secluded before feeding.

Tonight, their current prey was a couple they'd been following.

Kaila watched, hungry, from the rooftops as the couple was unknowingly steered toward a series of dark streets.

Claeg was trailing them from a distance, making a rhythmic clicking sound with his mouth meant to disconcert them as he closed in on them and caused their panic levels to rise steadily.

This subconsciously prevented them from turning around.

Then if they started heading in an unwanted direction, Kaila would drop down and do the same, steering them away.

What made the clicking so amazing to Kaila was how the humans had no idea they were hearing it. From the humans' perspectives, it was their "gut" telling them not to go in a certain direction.

Kaila and Claeg had picked up this hypnotic tune long ago to make hunting less noticeable to the masses.

If they played together, they could walk past a group of people, and it'd be like no one saw them.

Together, Kaila and Claeg guided the couple into a secluded alleyway where they were boxed in.

Once the twins ceased playing the tune, the couple came to their senses and looked around, wondering why'd they go there.

Unfortunately, when they turned around to leave the alley, Kaila and Claeg appeared from around the corner, blocking their exit.

Now alert, the man placed the woman behind him as she quaked in fear.

"What do you want," the man asked, panicking as he tried to stay strong. "You want our wallets? Here, just let us go."

He tossed his and the woman's spatial bags at Kaila and Claeg's feet.

Kaila picked up the guy's spatial bag and walked toward him.

"Your money isn't what I'm after," she said, her voice sweet and trusting, as she attached the guy's bag back to his hip.

She began to seductively circle the guy, edging the woman away from him as she caressed his neck and shoulders.

"I want you," she whispered lightly in his ear, causing his body to stiffen.

Claeg used his large fingers to turn the woman's trembling chin up toward him softly.

"And I want you," he said, wiping away her tears.

The woman made the mistake of peering into Claeg's eyes, suddenly noticing how they weren't normal and sensing the blood lust behind them.

Her body tensed from his intimidation as she slowly raised her hands to grab his large forearm, clutching it with all her strength, but that only showed her how pointless it was to resist.

"Please don't kill me," she pleaded hoarsely as her shaky hands traced up Claeg's arm.

Claeg smirked at the implication and glanced at the guy. Unlike the woman, he seemed less on edge as Kaila continued her ruse.

The guy smiled at the woman, thinking he understood what was happening.

"It's gonna be okay, babe. We've done this before," he told her.

Claeg laughed.

"I seriously doubt you have," he said as his eyes shimmered in the moonlight.

The guy's facial expression quickly shifted from confusion to sudden realization and finally to horror as he looked from Claeg to Kaila, who was glaring at her brother.

"Cover her mouth," she said to Claeg. She covered the guy's mouth just as he became hysterical and began to freak out.

Claeg placed one of his large hands over the woman's mouth, muffling her scream just as it came out.

Both humans struggled helplessly against the strength of Kaila and Claeg's grips.

"Couldn't you have held out a little longer?" Kaila asked. "That's the fourth time! Since I know it's been a while, I figured you'd forgotten and were trying to get back in rhythm, but you know we're supposed to be discreet. We don't want them alerting others."

"That was when we were humans," Claeg rebutted. "Now we're beyond that, and humans can't hurt us. Besides, why continue the act to drug them eventually? If you want them to stay quiet, then you can Order them to."

"No, I can't. None of the High Gods can remember? It's one of the few differences between us and the others," Kaila reminded him.

"Oh. I thought that was just me," Claeg responded. "Oh well, it doesn't change the fact that humans can't do anything to us."

Claeg looked down at the woman and bared his razor-sharp teeth at her. Her struggle intensified as she tried even harder to break free of his grip.

"Don't worry, I'll remove my hand," Claeg sadistically assured her. "But first..."

He brought down his teeth in a forceful bite that even pierced through the bones of her arm. When he released his grip from her mouth, her throat let out a pained scream that shot through the silent night sky.

Claeg took a deep breath as her scream filled the air, and the chunk of her arm he bit off slid down his throat. He sighed with extreme satisfaction.

"I can't get over how much the blood tastes better than it ever did before," Claeg said blissfully. "And the meat – it's bursting with extra flavor! Is it the adrenaline? Is it their fear? Ahh! We've been missing out, keeping them dosed. This is the true reward of the hunt!"

Kaila watched her brother, now intrigued, and uncovered the man's mouth.

He immediately began to beg for his life, but Kaila sank her teeth into his neck, hitting a jugular vein that gushed potent blood into her mouth.

She threw her head back and touched her lips, amazed at the new taste.

"Incredible..." she said softly.

Kaila and Claeg spent the next few minutes devouring their prey as their minds descended into a drunken euphoric state they'd never experienced before.

"This is the best!" Claeg roared. "After five hundred years, we're gods among men! We can eat whoever we want!"

Kaila suddenly faltered.

"What?" Claeg said, covered in blood.

"This feels off now," Kaila stated. "Don't get me wrong, the taste of blood is more potent now, but the thrill of the hunt is starting to fade like it did when we used to hunt animals."

"Yeah, you're right," Claeg agreed. "Humans are easy pickings now, so we need to hunt bigger game. Game that won't sit there to be slaughtered. It needs to be a challenge; that way, it's worth it when we catch them..."

"The others...The Primordials," Kaila suggested. "They're the only ones left who can challenge us. But Avarice will be angry if we cause too big a commotion or kill one before he gets what he wants from them...however, if it's just a taste, I'm sure they won't die."

"Yeah, okay," Claeg said, nodding in anticipation. "We should go for one of the more powerful ones. Avarice would be happier if we brought one of them back...after we get a bite, of course."

"No, we shouldn't go after any of the Supreme Primordials before getting the clearance to fight seriously," Kaila told him. "We should target one of the weaker ones. With us together, it'll be easy to overpower them, grab a taste, then bring them back so that Avarice won't punish us."

"Okay, so we go for the weakest," Claeg repeated. "Which one was that again? Naomi or Arne?"

"Naomi," Kaila answered while focusing. "Now, be quiet. I have to concentrate."

Kaila closed her eyes and expanded her sense as she searched for Naomi's energy. She knew they were usually at the Heart's HQ near Phoenix, so it was easy to figure out what direction to search.

After sifting through the human's energies, she finally began to sense someone more powerful. Due to the chilling nature of the power she felt Kaila was positive it was Naomi's.

"I found her," Kaila announced. "Although, it's strange – we were told they've met up with Michael, but I don't sense him with them."

"Maybe he's out," Claeg proposed impatiently. "Or maybe he left like the others. Either way, there's no one powerful in our way, so let's hurry; I'm starting to ache."

Kaila gives her brother a big smile as he lifts her and places her on his back. If he was carrying her, he must've planned to run as fast as he could. It'd only take twelve minutes to get there at his top running speed.

"Primordial blood..." Kaila said excitedly as she licked her lips. "I can't wait."

Fun Fact: Claeg and Kaila were born into a wealthy family in Seattle over five centuries ago, and although they're twins, they weren't born on the same day.
