The Planes Walkers
36. And Back

36. And Back

The Soul Plane was as daunting as the Spirit Plane. The land still had a mist covering it but it had more purple, which made it harder to see through. There were hundreds of buildings covering the area around them as they entered the portal.

"Where do you think Wrathel went?" Nadreen asked, cautiously looking around. She wasn't sure what to take of this Plane. It was such a strange place. She almost couldn't believe that it existed.

"Couldn't have gone too far." Heyvl moved his way through the other three. The idea of the Plane seemed to not faze him.

"What would he be doing?" Irina asked Jet and Nadreen.

"Probably absorbing the Element around him," Jet took a guess at it. The Emperor did explain it but it seemed pretty strange that a Planes Walker would gain such a feat through the machine. He didn't feel any different having entered through the portal.

Heyvl and Jet both moved forward while Irina and Nadreen covered the back. The Emperor could have gotten what he wanted and sneak up behind them easily. They were in his Element now.

Jet observed his friend carrying the same sword that he left behind. He was happy to see that it was being used and hadn't fallen into the Empire's hands. "Has it served you well?" Jet asked.

Heyvl eyed the Spirit Elementalist and saw that Jet was referencing the sword. A smile spread on Heyvl's face. "Yeah it has. I suppose you want it back now, huh?"

Jet shook his head. "It's better in your hands. I've learned a few new moves myself."

"I'm eager to see them. Your friend here," Heyvl replied as he looked at Nadreen, "has told me you've been through a lot since we last saw each other. Never thought Planes like this would exist until Nadreen explained how you were a Planes Walker, and so was Irina."

"I thought it might have just been powers of my Element, but it turns out that it's so much more."

"This is still pretty weird," Nadreen added. "I mean, it's exciting, but weird."

As the four continued into the thick mist, they reached a neighborhood street. The mist seemed to clear as the buildings became more apparent.

"So if there are houses and businesses...are there people here?" Heyvl asked.

"There should be," Jet replied, "but they might be hiding. They could know what is happening." Jet looked back to where they came from. Through the mist, he could see a glinting light from the portal.

"Planes Walking doesn't open portals," Irina added.

"There!" Nadreen exclaimed as she pointed passed all of them.

Ahead, there was a large silhouette of the Emperor. Wrathel's arms were raised. Purple aura was spinning all around him. It seemed to absorb into the Emperor.

"We have to stop him," Heyvl muttered.

"But how?" Nadreen asked.

Jet's hands lit up with Spirit Element. He knew exactly how. They had to fight him.

"You actually showed up?" the Emperor asked without even turning to look at them. "You all have guts. You have walked into your doom."

"We're going to stop you, Wrathel," Jet replied.

"Is that so? You realize you're in my domain. This is my Element!" Wrathel's hands exploded into Soul Element. The entire area shook with the wave of power that came from it.

The four all fell but recovered themselves before the Emperor could react on it. Jet felt scared. His palms began to sweat. When the Emperor held him earlier, it made him feel weak and helpless like he was when Dustan was killed. Though all of his friends were here with him, he felt more at ease.

"You four are just kids. I have the entire Elemental existence at my fingertips, and you think you can take me on?"

As Wrathel spoke the Plane changed to a land of fire and smoke. Lava pools were everywhere and most of the rock was on fire. Jet could tell that this was the Fire Plane. He looked around to make sure his friends were still with him. Entering through the portal seemed to allow Heyvl and Nadreen to move through the Planes as well.

All of them were ready. Crystal Element covered Irina's fists as Spirit covered Nadreen's. Heyvl held the crystal sword with both hands on the grip with Soul Element rising around it. Jet turned back to the Emperor, who was scowling at them. Jet returned a smirk. For the first time in his life, he felt truly brave.

Jet burst into a sprint, followed by the other three. He thought that if they all attacked Wrathel, Wrathel might not be able to handle all attacks. The Emperor seemed to brace himself for them. One of his fists was full of fire and the other covered in the smoky Soul Element. Dustan had told Jet fairytales of Elementalists who could control two Elements, but now that Jet saw someone who could use any, it wasn't as exciting.

The Emperor threw fire towards the four, so they all split from each other. The Fire Plane was dangerous. The stone and rock that allowed them to run felt unstable. Jet carefully made sure that his steps wouldn't push through the brittle stone. He barely managed to use his Element to sidestep enough to dodge the fireball.

"The rock is brittle!" he called out to the others. They were already jumping from any stable platform to keep moving towards the Emperor. Irina was using her Element to create a more stable ground.

"Too bad for you all," Wrathel laughed. He was able to walk on the lava without any problem. Fire Elementalists have always had an immunity to heat or burning. It seemed to attribute to whatever they wore as well.

Jet blasted Spirit Element at the Emperor. Ranged attacks were best in this environment. The pale green Element soared at Wrathel, but he easily moved away from it.

"You'll have to try harder than that." Wrathel then blasted for individual balls of Soul Element to each of them. Jet watched as Heyvl and Irina were naturals when it came to avoiding the Emperor's attacks. Nadreen used her Element to block the Soul energy.

The Emperor continued to move further away into the Fire Plane. It made it harder for the four of them to keep up. He was toying with them. Soul and Fire Elements were shot at them every so often, causing them to slow down and watch their steps.

Heyvl decided he had to move quicker. He wasn't sure how to use his Element but he knew how to use the blade. As he ran amongst the brittle stones, one of the Emperor's attacks landed right in front of him. Heyvl braced himself until he realized it missed him.

"It seems like you'll have to try harder," Heyvl laughed. He continued back into a sprint. The stone below him cracked as his foot pressed down. He looked down and saw lava began to slowly spurt out.

Jet looked over to see Heyvl's face lose all color as he looked down. He had known what happened. Jet quickly blasted Element next to Heyvl and switched places with it. Jet then grabbed Heyvl before the lava collapsed the stone path. He move backwards onto more solid stone. Heyvl looked back at Jet and smiled.

"Thanks."

"This Plane isn't optimal for this. We need to get him to change the Plane." As Jet said it to Heyvl, his eyes widened. "What if we get him to get us to go to the Spirit or Crystal Plane?"

"How could we do that? And why?" Heyvl asked.

"I'm guessing the machine responds to Planes Walkers in their native Planes. That's why we were in the Soul Plane when we entered."

"Wouldn't he know that?"

"Possibly, but perhaps we can trick him."

"You think so? For a person who had such a large plan for power, he doesn't seem like one who would be tricked easily," Heyvl explained as he dusted himself off. The two stood watching Nadreen and Irina continue towards the Emperor.

"Before you arrived, he seemed to be irritated by my taunting."

"Taunting huh? Doesn't sound like something you would do."

Jet shrugged with a smirk. "When you get captured and spend a bit in the desert sun, maybe you change a bit."

"Same could be said while you travel through an entire land of snow and bandits."

Jet nodded to his friend. He knew the Emperor didn't like being taunted at or made fun of in his abilities. Wrathel didn't have much of a tolerance for Jet's mocking. He couldn't be sure if it was a weakness, but he had to try to use it to his advantage.

"Well let's try this," Heyvl told Jet as he readied his sword again.

Jet gave him a nod. Before they could move, the Plane began to change. The lava and fire all faded away into a dry land. The ground below their feet filled in with rough dirt and rocks. The sky that was once darkened with smoke and fire, was now more open and blue.

"This is more like it," Heyvl laughed. He didn't hesitated to run towards the Emperor in the distance. They were all on flat ground and would have an easier time reaching him. "Come on, Jet!"

Jet looked around. He wasn't exactly sure what Plane that they were in. It looked like a section of the Ahrurian desert. The ground below him began to rumble. It suddenly came to Jet what Plane it was.

"It's the Earth Plane!" Jet shouted out to his friends.

Heyvl didn't break his stride to Wrathel. Before he knew it, a fist made out of complete rock emerged from the ground in front of the Emperor. The Earth fist slammed into Heyvl with great power. Heyvl flew back towards the other three.

Jet watched his friend tumble in the dirt. Dirt and dust was kicked up as Heyvl came to a halt. "Are you okay?" the Spirit Elementalist asked.

"Yeah...I'm fine." Heyvl's breath was knocked out of him.

Jet knew that Elementless didn't have as much tolerance to pain that Elementalists did. But perhaps Heyvl could take more as an Elementalist now.

"This area might be more dangerous than the last Plane," Jet explained to the others.

"Well the entire land is the Element, but I think all would be equally dangerous," Irina added.

Jet nodded. All the Planes allowed the Emperor a new Element to his disposal. If he wanted to, he could have easily swallowed them all up with any of the earth around them. Perhaps the Emperor was toying with them after all. He knew that could be his way to get him to change the Plane.

"You're certainly tough, hiding behind other Elements," Jet said out loud to the Emperor.

Heyvl was smirking on the floor. Irina and Nadreen looked wide eyed at Jet, surprised at the taunting.

"Do you want him to throw more rock fists at us?" Nadreen asked.

Jet smugly smiled at them and then said, "That's all he would do is use the new Elements to bother us, rather than fight us in his own."

Wrathel frowned at Jet's words. "I don't need to use this power to fight you brats! I could save it for the armies and show them the true power of the Planes Walkers!"

"Well I'm sure with your power you could cause a lot of havoc in Planes you don't care about," Heyvl chimed in.

The Emperor took the bait. The Plane began to change into the Spirit Plane. "I believe you're right, for being a poor Lonavian. Why destroy the other Planes that I hope to overpower when I can simply cause your precious Spirit Plane more trouble."

Nadreen's fists lit up with Spirit Element. It made Jet's and Heyvl's rouse more convincing. "These are innocent people!" she yelled. There were no natives to the Plane around. They had all fled when the Emperor began to fight Jet before.

"Your Element has always been a pain. They're regressive. They held the world at their fingertips and failed to take full grasp. I'm sure the Planes people are no different!"

Wrathel's Soul Element lit up and caused a few nearby buildings to crack and shake.

Heyvl gave Jet a quick glance as to say "Hurry up and figure out how to gain the power." Jet nodded in return. The Lonavian held one hand to his side. He began to think that the last hit broke some ribs, but he knew he had to remain a distraction for Jet.

Irina and Nadreen both were already running at the Emperor when Heyvl began to walk. "I hope you can figure it out fast, Jet," he thought to himself.

Jet watched as the three began to engage the Emperor, which provided sufficient distraction. Jet brought his Element to his hands and began to sense his surroundings.

"Okay, Spirit Plane. I came from the portal. Show me the power to fight the Emperor."

The Spirit Plane had never felt alive as it did just then for Jet. Even though the Planes people had scattered, he felt more energy. "Is this it?" he thought. The green aura swayed as the Ahrurian moved his hand to get some sort of reaction.

"Please give me the strength of the Planes. The man over there doesn't deserve that power. He..." Jet muttered with hesitation, "He killed my brother."

The Element shimmered in his hands as if a breeze blew by. Jet looked around to see if there was a response. The Spirit Element flickered more wildly. Suddenly, several similar looking auras appeared and began to swirl into Jet's Element.

Before his eyes, he witnessed every Plane. Spirit and Soul flashed quickly, along with the Crystal. Fire and Earth went by just as fast. Water appeared as a vast ocean with several islands of villages. Air came next as a large open sky filled with flying machines. The Lightning Plane was a strange land of technology that Jet hadn't even seen before. The last two Planes that appeared were a land of completely Darkness and a land of complete Light. Jet blinked a few times after the Planes came to him. Each one had given him more energy and power. He suddenly felt all of the Elements at his fingertips.

Wrathel must have sense it. He blasted the three others away from him to get a better look at Jet down the street. "No!" he bellowed out. The Emperor's words caused the buildings to crumble.

Jet looked over to the Emperor. Wrathel was bounding over to him now. Each step destroyed the road below his boots. Jet could tell that Wrathel was using as much power as he could.

"You dare, after all this, try to oppose me and my power that I worked so hard for?!" Wrathel spat.

"You killed my brother and you're trying to destroy the world!"

"I'm not trying to destroy it, I want to rule it!" Wrathel replied.

Jet blasted his Spirit Element to keep Wrathel away. It had more power to it now. Jet smiled as he saw it slow Wrathel down. "This tower has the ability to completely wipe out the world with its power. You're too blinded by your need for the power to see how much you've put everyone in danger! All because you killed my brother."

"Your brother could have avoided that if he was stronger!" Wrathel's body erupted in the purple counterpart Element. His hands had both Spirit and Soul in them.

Jet's smile faded after hearing that. "My brother was strong!" Tears began to form in his eyes. "He was stronger than you'll ever be!"

Wrathel started to blast his own Element back. The two Elements clashed and began to struggle against one another. The Emperor's gave way a bit when Heyvl, Nadreen, and Irina both started to attack him too.

"Miserable little pests!"

Irina's Crystal Element slammed into Wrathel's back, alongside with Heyvl attempting to slash at his armor with his Element. Nadreen joined Jet's side and started to push her own Element along with his. She gave him a nod, and Jet returned with a smile.

"We all can't let you take over the world, Wrathel!" Jet yelled over the noise of the Elements crackling and sparking.

The Emperor frowned and tried to give it his all. He couldn't let a bunch of kids defeat him after he's come so far. His Element continued to flow from him. He also threw in every other kind of Element he felt at his disposal. The multiple Elements bellowed from the Emperor's own being. The burst of energy caused all four of them to be pushed back on to the ground.

"You should be thankful. If it wasn't for your brother, I wouldn't have been able to get this much power," the Emperor said with a smirk through the aura of several Elements. The armored man was now engulfed in each Element Jet had witnessed.

"I think you're confused. You're the only one thankful for it. I'd give anything to have my brother back," Jet replied as he stood up weakly. The power emanating from the Emperor seemed to be hurting him just in the presence of it.

The Emperor simply laughed. "It's always the poor and weak who are held back by family. I did everything I had to reach where I am! Your brother was simply another cog in the machine."

"How many innocent lives have you taken in the process? You're a murderer, Wrathel. No one should follow your rule," Heyvl replied from behind the Emperor.

"You brats can call me anything you like. It won't matter after I take your Souls."

Every Element continued to blast out of the Emperor. Heyvl, Nadreen, and Irina had to move away to take cover. Jet felt the urge to move the Elements as they came at him. Water splashed to the floor as Jet took a step towards the Emperor. Wrathel was also moving towards Jet.

With a wave of his hands, Fire roared over his head and Earth sunk into the ground. A different Element came by with each step the two became closer.

"You're a fool to go against me," Wrathel said. He was almost within reaching distance of Jet.

"Jet!" Heyvl shouted.

Jet wanted to be close to the Emperor. He could only think of one way to stop him.

Wrathel reached out to Jet and grabbed him through the chaos. Immediately, a clear purple shape began to pull from Jet. Jet managed to reach over through the pain he felt and grab Wrathel. A green spirit started to pull from the Emperor.

"What the? No!" Wrathel screamed as he pulled harder on Jet's Soul.

The pain was excruciating. But he knew the Emperor was too powerful to defeat by any other means. The power of all the Elements allowed him to get this close. The two were struggling with each other's grasp.

Heyvl broke from cover and began to fight his way through the Elements. Irina and Nadreen went to his side, using their Elements to shield as much as they could.

"Leave Jet alone!" Heyvl yelled at the Emperor. His words could barely be heard through the destruction the Elements were causing to the ground and buildings.

Wrathel's face held a grin as Jet's Soul was pulled further and further out. Jet could see it before his own eyes.

"I should have killed you the same way that night."

Jet didn't reply. He focused all his strength on pulling the Spirit from Wrathel. He wasn't even sure if it would have the same effect, but it was his natural Element and the only chance he had. "Come on," he told himself. "This is for Dustan."

With everything he could muster, and all the Elemental power the tower had given him as a Planes Walker, Jet gave one final pull to the Emperor's Spirit. Jet opened his eyes to see the Emperor's face in shock. Jet had pulled the spirit out of him. He released it and it dissipated into the air.

"No..." Wrathel managed to say before his body fell to the ground. The Elemental chaos stopped. Jet couldn't think straight. He felt weak. He felt like blacking out.

"Jet!" his three friends yelled in unison as he fell to the floor.

As they began to carry him, he managed to open his eyes and see a familiar spirit. It wasn't a Planes person, but an Elemental spirit. It began to wave at him as he was carried off away from the destruction.

"D-D-Dustan?" Jet muttered before losing complete consciousness.
