[Book II Chapter 139] LILY: An Unparalleled Spell

------------------------------------------------

Lily glided forwards on wings of fire while the summoning circle above her head spewed forth myriads of phoenixes. These summons dove down to incinerate everything in their path, illuminating the night landscape.

When Jayden returned with the news of the summoning pit, Kaygren had shut down every rift within its vicinity, forcing them to begin their incursions two hundred miles away.

Venturing that deep into enemy territory had prooved a challenge. Mount Gull was overflowing with sovereigns, not to mention the immortals of the hidden village of Fang. Sending in a small high-powered strike force ran the risk of finding themselves surrounded without no means of retreat. Instead, they’d opted for a large military force which could seize territory until they were close enough to snipe their target. Which is right ahead.

For the final stretch, Lily had taken the lead herself. There were no sovereigns currently challenging them, so it was child’s play to tear through the opposition. She found release and satisfaction in this chance to cut loose.

Astra had assigned her the task of overseeing the evacuation of the area North of Remnant, which had turned into a tedious affair. Once a day, she’d activate Infinity Engine and rocket around searching with Godly Reach. Every demonic beast and Fang ninja she spotted was promptly immolated. For good measure, she’d also lob potent pyrotechnics into all the rifts, explosions meant to level large cities.

Only one piece of excitement had broken this monotone. Sekken, believing himself clever, had invaded right after she’d used her sublime vagaries. Like the Laughing Man, he learned I have other tricks up my sleeve. The sovereign had fled in terror, calling out his ‘hounds of war’ and casting tens of thousands of demonic beasts in her starfire to enable his escape.

A regrettable outcome. In preparation of this Dark Age, Rose had slowly accumulated a handful fragments of Argadon’s left canine from deep in the Ether. Materializing each had taken several decades, and it was the second time she’d used one without slaying her prey. At least she took solace that Sekken had never dared to appear again.

Astra flew up besides her. “Remember not to exhaust yourself. You’re the key to this entire operation.”

“I have already activated Infinity Engine.” Lily replied. “You know how this works. I have to keep channeling full throttle, or I lose its benefits.”

“Which is why you should have rested until we arrived.” Astra countered tersely.

Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.

“I’m not going to run out of steam.” Lily sighed. “Not with the stamina buff from ‘Rallying Cry’.” Barsal Farran had remained behind at the midway point, where his sublime vagary would reach everyone. It was a nostalgic treat to fight under its effects.

Once more, she couldn’t help wondering about its full activation. Even during the last Dark Age, Barsal rarely called out his ability. Perhaps there was some rare or unique conditions as a prerequisite. In the end, it doesn’t matter. The passive by itself is insanely overpowered.

“You should just concern yourself with being ready to protect me.” Lily glanced back at the fleet of battleships following Astra.

Their journey so far hadn’t been peaceful, With Kaygren personally leading increasingly frantic assaults. The celestial tiger’s mastery over lightning, together with the ferocity of his lieutenants and underlings, made for harrowing onslaughts. Repelling them grew more difficult the deeper they penetrated into enemy territory. Thankfully, they’d retreat at any major setback, sending endless waves of demonic beasts to harass them. There was little doubt Kaygren was having his sovereigns raid Shangri-la to sustain their minions numbers rather than risking direct confrontations. He’s afraid of losing sovereigns before Mount Gull is stabilized.

This was good for their incursion force. While slowing them down, the lesser beasts presented no real danger on their own. Another bright spot was the absence of Fang ninjas, who had not, so far, involved themselves.

Lily dropped down on a ridge and approached its edge. Astra soon joined her, “Well? Is it close enough?”

Concentrating, Lily flung a fireball towards a distant valley in a ridge of the over-sized mountain. “That’s the one?” She asked.

Astra nodded, “It’s quite a distance away.”

“No worried.” Lily smirked confidently. “As long as I can see it, I won’t miss.”

“Then I’ll set up a barrier.” August Terrance declared. the Severing Air was here to ensure she could work in peace.

Lily was about to begin when she detected several immortal-level entities nearing their position. “Kaygren’s back.” She grimaced.

“We’ll deal with it.” Astra spread her ice wings. “You focus on your task.”

Without Pause, Lily extended her spiritual senses upwards. Once at their limits, she formed a magic circle to extend them further, repeating the process again and again to reach for the fake stars above.

She had already settled on her magic, a signature spell only she could use. It was one she’d designed during the last Dark Age and had been forbidden to use after wiping out an allied fleet. I also annihilated an undead army. Some people are too prickly.

Arriving at her desired high, she carefully constructed thirteen-layered magical circle, carefully adjusting its aim. Next she charged this spell array.

A lightning bolt struck again the invisible barrier shielding her, startling her. Far off in the sky, Kaygren’s form crackled with electricity. “Hurry up.” August urged. “I can’t maintained this forever.”

“Almost done.” Lily replied. Pouring in a last bit of power, she released her magic and smiled as a bright light sprung into existence. Meteors are common. Any master fire mage can create them. Now a comet on the other hand…

The celestial object descended at a tremendous pace, then there was a blinding flash when it impacted her target dead center. Lily was happy to confirm a large chunk of Mount Gull had vanished, a fiery hellscape left in its wake. If we’re lucky, that took out a couple of revenants for good.
