Volume 1: Phantoms Descends
Chapter #1.2
Ken
'It’s Saturday night in the real world and I’m still stuck here. It seemed tonight shall be another busy night and yet despite the chaos I still found solace at this tiny prison located south of where the 100 are located.
Gotta Rest…
A well-deserved rest...'
Ken was on deep thought and kept his eyes closed, as he required a little respite to regain his nearly depleted physical strength while he listened and observed his surroundings.
After nearly 2 weeks of constant battle, where broken shields and masses of corpses lay since the event had begun, and the barely over twenty-six thousand players who went and participate after week of battle it has now been reduced clad both themselves and the environment with destruction and mayhem had now been reduced to less than a thousand participants.
Only a 2 days left remained till the gates of Avernus shut and banish all remaining dungeon raiders out of the tower. This everyone had managed to move as one this zone would’ve been over quite some time ago but the players weren’t a single cohesive force, that inhibited them to progressed faster. As always pride, greed and ego clashed fruitlessly as they battled with hundreds of thousands of sentient humanoids and varying monsters.
After all, Avernus was the 1st mythical conquerable free zone to be opened the game company allowed the siege to last at least 14 days.
The time was closing in as each and everyone was getting more desperate and hopeful for they are nearing its conclusion. As within the ashes of the countless corpses and wake of the towers, destruction rose 4 prominent group left stood proudly. 2 of those are what remained of a renowned alliances of major guilds that antagonized each other, a professional small guild that had mostly consist of veteran players did not mix with any other clans or alliances, and the other was a group of 100 misfits put together for a common cause who managed to slip through the chaos. Such group should’ve perished along time ago but they are made up of 100 veteran players from disbanded guilds, some are mercenaries, defeated guilds, and solo players. There was supposed to be a fifth but somehow they suddenly disappeared without a trace.
There were several investigations but somehow no trace was found so they just dismissed them as though they had given up.
The battle was taking place in a massive Molten Prison located within an active volcano as the major forces scatter and clash to dominate this burning world.
Amidst the ensuing chaos a pioneer had casually sat on one of the broken prison cells as he watches the events that had been transpiring outside his cell.
Damn! Due to a lack of a true command structure and overall coordination, the idiots fought like madmen and then twice we got screwed over at Sea world and Necropolis. I don’t even want to think about what happened on the Frozen Tundra. When everyone was fighting that giant skeletal dragon the right wing shattered by that tail sweep and because of a reckless mistake many had died at the center when that surprising acid breaths hit and melted the others like butter. Overall the Wicked Syndicate’s Empire and the others assault had become bogged down due to conflicting interests to their material gathering and heavy competition with the other groups.
Joining the siege seemed like a good idea at that time and to relieve boredom after finding out the others won’t arrive for a few more days.
My friends couldn’t enter because they arrived after the siege had started.
Now I’m stuck here like an idiot with the rest of the unruly mobs .
Good Job, Ken.
Ken had begun to felt the accumulation of stress within him as he viewed. After the disaster and the discontent due to from the free-for-all conflict, several groups disbanded and those without liege or allegiances banded together and slipped ahead within the chaos. But they had to be stuck here on this massive Molten prison for several hours now.
This place could be described as a city of fortresses rather than a prison as each path and area are filled with either traps or molten soldiers. Progress became stagnant as they were unable to force their way through the scorching heat and the packed ranks of Fire elementals, Fire Drakes, Goblins and the annoying burning hounds. With such fearsome resistance stonewalled everyone’s progress. Even after nearly a week of continuous battle within Avernus, Two of the remaining major forces had at least kept rotating in and out of the battle, No group could still locate where the Molten Prison’s [Keeper] room lie.
Reminding himself that this isn’t a raiding force but unruly mobs with each of their own agendas.
He didn’t particularly mind though but for some reason, he couldn’t get along with the second largest remaining group that associated themselves under the banner of those self-proclaimed "Lords of Pioneers" and their associates known as the “Lords Alliance”.
So far Ken felt the only progress in the battle was being made on the far edge of the side of the Molten Prison’s Left wing. A famous small guild yet elite with a peculiar name called the “Damn! I thought She was over 'LVL' 18” a name that's more like a pun about underage female players. With that kind of name one would think that they would be lacking female players but the pleasant irony of it is that that guild itself had been dubbed by the many pioneers as the "Valkyrie Legion" because they had a higher ratio of female members, that fiercely defended the western gate against the constant attacks from dozens of monsters that came forth from the back gate at regular intervals.
Though they weren't that many like those of the Syndicate or that high level like those of the associates of the self-proclaimed Lords Of Pioneers, the Valkyrie legion demonstrated abilities matching nearly the players of those within the hall of fame players or so. In addition, their equipment was considerable above decent, so their attacks and defenses were also quite good. Alone, they could easily take down one or two dozen Fire Drakes, but there was a problem.
They were far too few of them and the fatigue had begun to show and the Valkyrie legion only had 38 members remaining and only 6 of those had the a profession similar to healers. Therefore, when the enemy was upon them and even with an amassed of a strategy and arsenal at your disposal it would still be difficult against the enemies that would just charge at them relentlessly while swinging their swords, claws and magics at them in desperation to defend this dreaded prison. Problems would begin to accumulate no matter how much any kind of group tries to cope with it with limited resources.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
It was no wonder that there was a considerable loss of Health with each clash.
The second problem was, even though they had lost that much Health, there wasn't enough Healer professions that could sustain their numbers indefinitely so there was no way to recover properly. That had been the cases of the majority of every group who participated here.
Even with all the preparations one couldn’t possibly guess every scenario one would encounter.
Thanks to that, they had to apply first aid or eat food to recover Health after the fighting was over. There were many cases along the way where they had to fight a monster legion before they were done recovering.
"Hey Ken!, Don't just slack around by yourself will ya! We’re heading out. Nya!"
Ken heard a familiar loud voice came from the nearby corridor shouting nonchalantly without worry.
While within this level shouting loudly would cause undesired attraction but Ken and his group manage to secure this entire building as a base camp located on the southeast corner of the Molten prison.
While the entirety of the molten prison itself seemed like it’s a dome within a volcano it had a vast size of about 495 mi². Rather than a single prison, it is a collective of many scattered prisons with branching rivers of lava in between and effectively making it a city with nearly the size equivalent to famous Los Angeles City which had the size of 503 mi².
An impressive feat of this tower is that isn’t bound by common sense.
He knew that the person was just shooting in a general direction rather than knowing where exactly he is. Ken did not respond but rather he stood and dusted and prepared himself to set forth and left the cell to meet the person who called him.
Upon exiting his cell there was a figure standing in the corridor, staring at him. The figure itself seemed to melt into the darkness, but it wasn’t like the way thieves hid in the shadows. It was rather the person’s figure covered with fluffy black fur skin, a being who belong to the humanoid feline race with the eyes that shone brightly in the darkness.
The feline creature stepped out of the dark. He wore a black gentlemen’s clothing. In his hand, he held a dagger, and his eyes were looking directly at Ken.
“Ah! There you are Nya! Been looking for ya boy we gotta go! Captain found something interesting”
“Hey! Can’t I slack off a bit more?”
“Nya! Vice-captain already complains to captain that we should just leave Nya behind because you slack off too much”
"Heh! Guess time to head out. Alright, since they overlook this much! Now there's no need to worry. I’ll go."
“I-is that so. That’s great Nya.”
The duo moved and walked along the silent corridor, then walked down the stairs and to where all the others are whilst Ken took a bottle of water to drink. The heat was bearable thanks to his a rare class ring he brought along that has a good amount of [Fire Resistance] stats he had to equip after entering this zone yesterday. If not he would’ve died from heat exhaustion quite some time ago.
Exiting the corridor and entered the a large hall. Ken could see that apparently everybody was already present, He could hear several people arguing.
"Dirty bastards! Reasonable prices my ass! They're deciding what's reasonable by themselves.
“Dammit!”
“There is currently no company engaging the eastern gate and no information had been gathered about that location thus far and we are requested as there aren't any group with enough martial ability to investigate it. That’s why the Lord's Alliance and the Wicked Syndicate and their allies are asking for assistance to check the eastern fortress and we are the closest one to it." A slender young man who wore a magician's robe stood, who held a dark staff in front of the crowd declared. Ken instantly recognized him without even the need even if it is very unpleasant but he did not want to say his name.
"If they insult us further I'll Axe their faces myself.”
“Are they crazy? let them do that by themselves. Without a doubt, they are just trying to use us to further their own goals.” A sturdy tall man with pale red hair wielding a massive Ax Legendary class known as “Axe of Perun”, the axe wielded by the Slavic god of thunder and lightning, Perun. As the man was voicing himself in front of the crowd Ken knew the guy was a hothead with the profession of [Axe] for which he relied solely on Axes and had a level of 282.
His strength in the battlefield was without question as he was known to have had single-handedly chopped the head of a massive 50ft Frost Giant named “Bato” who had the level of 285 several times higher than him on the previous floor "Frozen Tundra" before and earning him the title of “Giant Executioner”.
“Khan! Enough already! The ten leaders voted 8 to 2 and we are basically a mercenary crew.”
“Most of us already agreed to the terms and both the Syndicate and the Alliance are confronting the main Molten Horde as we speak. Besides, the Syndicate and the Alliance will send some of their men to assist us. Might be an easy Astral Coins gain if nothing significant happens. If something does then let's just do the usual and send it to oblivion.” An elegant black knight spoke casually who tried to calm the sturdy axe man.
“Bu-”
“Enough!”
Just as Khan was about to interrupt with another complaint, The man spoke in a clear and commanding loud voice, making Khan realized nearly everyone present shared the same opinion, so he reluctantly gave a straightforward unwilling nod as agreement and subsequently tried to shut himself up.
Such scene would trifle others if one would speak against the man who carries great strength and Titled as the “Giant Executioner” but everyone knew that the one who made the other forcibly calmed down was someone who everyone deemed to be the strongest man in the group. A person with an unyielding charisma that made him the leader of the this misfitted group.
Ken knew he’s a well known chivalrous man with a profession of [Dread Knight] and his current level had managed to reach 286 as he wielded the Legendary class "Skofnung". A legendary sword with mystical properties.
“——What about payment Ronan?” The Dread Knight Inquired the slender young man who wore a magician’s robe on his left side.
“150 each from both the Alliance and Syndicate totaling 300 and each merc member would receive 3 as agreed upon completion of the objective.”
“And the request?”
“Investigate eastern fortress and try to locate level 10’s Molten Prisons [Keeper]. If found report back immediately to both the Wicked Syndicate and Lords Alliance and do not engage the [Keeper]”
Several murmurs could be heard from within the crowd.
Ken saw that the leading knight turned around and saw him, then proceed to survey the room and then declared.
“The break’s over! Everyone head out and show them what we've got.” and then the crowd roared wild.
To be Continued.
