“Do you think they were sent by the Duke?” Veronica queried between breaths.
“Most likely.” a shrill voice squeaked.
As I looked at her, my heart sank. A young girl stood before me with ears like a cat and a tail to match. I exchanged a glance with Veronica and Vayren, who shared my shocked expression.
“Who are you?” I asked cautiously, my hand still gripping my sword.
The girl hesitated for a moment before answering. “Huh, don’t recognize me.”
My mind raced as I tried to piece together the puzzle.
“So the rumors are true?” Vayren said as he approached us, his sword still unsheathed.

“What rumors?” I asked, giving Vayren a confused glance.
“I have heard that some members of the demon beast tribes are capable of taking on the form of their tribe’s figurehead,” Vayren stated.
Rin looked up at us, her eyes filled with a mischievous look. “Looks like somebody is studious. Oh, and sorry for roping you guys into this, but I wasn’t exactly keen on working for that geezer.”
My mind raced as I tried to figure out what to do next. We couldn’t just leave her here, especially if her life was in danger.
“Hey Kerth, Veronica, I think our only option is to flee to the demon’s domain,” Vayren spoke, his voice urgent.
Veronica nodded, her face set in determination. “Agreed. I don’t think any of us are safe in Cariseia for the foreseeable future?”
“Demon’s domain it is, then,” I said in agreement.
As we made our way out of the inn, we could hear the sounds of approaching militia in the distance. We didn’t have much time. Yet Misty stood apprehensively in the doorway.
“Hey Misty, what are you waiting for? We have to get going.” Vayren shouted.
Misty slowly looked up from the ground and met our gaze. “You already helped me enough. Don’t worry about me.”
“Ha, not a chance. You got us into this mess, so you might as well show some commitment.” Vayren snorted.
“We’ll head for the demon’s domain. I don’t think there is a Cariseian alive who would follow us through the demon’s domain. So, are you coming?” Vayren asked once more.
Misty’s lips curled into a smile. “Alright, but no regretting your kindness later. Oh, and the name Rin. Rin Ocicat not Misty.”
Thus, our party set out for the demon’s domain, joined by a new member.
