Mrs. Agnes

As he told his story, Thomas would sometimes pause and become melancholic. The emotions and feelings he experienced were resonating with the old lady's heart in every word. The old lady was indeed a good listener. She felt each emotion resonate within her own heart. She held her breath during tense moments, flinched at the hardships described, and observed moments of silence when words failed to convey the depth of Thomas's journey."Such a young child..." She thought to herself when she was listening to the story. She felt the entire story intense as she hid tears in her eyes.

After, the storytelling ended. She quickly stood up, sniffling. And she grabbed his empty cup. Rain was now heavier so she started to talk. "I don't think you can go anywhere in this weather. And considering we don't have an open inn in our town, after that stupid famine why don't you stay here? Oh, also are you hungry?" When she mentioned hunger, Thomas realized he hadn't eaten for two days. He said shyly that he was indeed hungry. The last meal he had was the day of the massacre.

Old Lady, whose name apparently was Agnes brought a plate of chicken. "We had a small chicken coop in the yard. But due to the famine, we can't find enough food to feed them all so, eat as much as you want kid," she said warmly. For &Thomas that piece of meat was the tastiest thing he had ever had that night. He ate until he no longer felt the void in his stomach. The tears in his eyes were starting to shape as he left the fork on the table. He was thinking about his family. He was feeling something in his throat that was blocking him even from breathing peacefully.

Mrs. Agnes was watching this young, sinless boy. She was feeling every emotion he had within herself and was praying for him by holding her star necklace. "Lord, grant this poor child the strength to endure whatever trials lie ahead. Guide him and accompany him through every difficulty he may face." She then gently touched Thomas' shoulder and left the boy alone. She was well aware that boys in the continent would never want to show their tears to others.

Thomas started to cry as Mrs. Agnes left the room. He was crying with everything he had endured. He was crying for everyone he loved and knew. He cried by thinking about the feeling of security given by his father, and the feeling of love given by his mother. He cried by thinking about the feeling of hope given by Mr. Hanks. He cried by thinking of the feeling of wisdom given to him by Father Elias...

He cried until his eyes dried and he fell asleep when he used the last bit of his strength. Mrs. Agnes came late in the night to check on him and when she saw the little boy who was sleeping in his arms. She made a broken sad smile and put a blanket on the boy. She then turned her gaze away to the moon.

She wanted to believe that things would get better soon...
