With a Spark

In the middle of a barren wasteland, several lights of numerous colors and shades slowly float across several feet above the floor when several winged imps fall from the sky in an attempt to capture these lights. Some of the imps shove the lights into their mouths while others shove them into bags. The rest of the lights scatter in random directions but the imps seem to corner several of them. One of the lights was slightly dimmer compared to the others and was surrounded by multiple imps to be eaten or captured. That light shook on the spot when a circle of light appeared below it and made a hole in the ground and the light flew towards it in the hopes that it would lead to its escape. The imps attempt to intercept the light but were too slow to stop it.

Once on the other side, I see a lizard-like creature that was bigger than me. It was standing on 2 legs and it had leather covering the majority of its scales. Its scales are brown but whether that's their natural color or from dirt is hard to tell. As I examine the lizard I suddenly feel a tug towards the lizard and I'm dragged into its body. As I enter I hear a crackle that was very high in pitch, "HAHAHA, at last, I'll be able to get back at those bastards by taking back my shiny!" I feel a strange feeling and nausea. But then can see the room from a higher position than before. Suddenly a flow of information enters my mind.

This kobold summoned me in the hopes to become stronger and take back what was 'stolen' from him. Rat, the name of the kobold rants both in his mind and out loud about how he will get revenge and take everything. Sadly it seems that Rat has forgotten the contents of the spell he used to summon me. In order to summon me he had to first offer his own soul and then state his desire at which once granted the contract will be fulfilled. Meaning he sold his soul just for a gold ring. A gold ring that holds no real meaning to the kobold but was from failing to steal it from some noble that mocked him. 'I don't know if I should pity him or if this is what he deserves for rushing a summoning.'

I feel the spell weave through and create a contract in my mind. It tells me that I have to give Rat a portion of my power until he gets the ring and can not do anything that will stop Rat from achieving his goal. There is another clause where if Rat makes the objective impossible to achieve, such as destroying the ring before the contract is up, then I still get his soul and am free to do as I wish. This must be Rat's own choice and can not be forced. If the objective becomes impossible by a third party then the contract is destroyed and Rat will be able to keep his soul while I'll be forced back to hell with nothing. The contract is fulfilled once the ring is in Rat's possession and I return to hell.

Once I finish examining the contract I hear Rat mumble, "Now what power did I get? I feel different but...." I suddenly feel the contract force me to give Rat some of my power but I don't know what I can give. Suddenly a new influx of information enters me but not from the contract but from the center of what I am. The dark area around us seems to become familiar and comfortable. Rat's mind seems to open to me allowing me to pull even more information from Rat but also a new desire. A desire to own Rat's body. I push on Rat's mind to reach deeper but then Rat starts to complain, "OW, my head feels like it's cracking!" Then the contract activates again and stops me in my tracks. I feel pain ring out through me.

Once I restabilize I quickly bury the desire to hollow out Rat's mind. 'Damn, I guess that happens when I go against the contract.' I refocus on fulfilling the contract and give Rat one of my abilities. In the next instance, Rat's body becomes flat as paper and turns dark as a shadow. "FUCK, WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO ME! Wait, is this the power I gained? Did need to have a splitting headache to activate it or did my body need to get accustomed to it?" I don't respond to him because I wonder what I found out.

'First. my power over the shadows can be transferred to my host and it seems that by my nature I am very hostile to my host. Second, I now have more access to Rat's knowledge than before like a summary of Rat's life story so far.' These discoveries seem to hint at something more personal than the contract but for now, let's focus on Rat.

Once I stop wondering my focus goes back to Rat I hear him say, "... I need to show off my powers to everyone and and and-" I stop those thoughts and try to push him to refocus on the ring. "No, I'll get back my shiny, and everyone will bask in my power. They will tell stories of how Rat stole from the king and emptied the lands of its' riches." Idiotic as always but at least I should be free sooner now.

Author notes:

Hello everyone, thank you for reading. This is my first story, a brain worm from Rule of Chaos DnD. I recommend looking them up if you are interested in the possible abilities that I'll be giving our parasitic shadow. The story won't be completely based on that system but for now, it will act as a foundation. Please take mercy on me but I would love to hear your feedback and might edit this chapter further down the line. Have a wonderful day.
