The Shadow Men: Part One

I wasn’t anyone special at the time. Just your average 16-year old teenager with a dislike of authority. Because of this, I sometimes wondered, “Why me?”

I wasn’t some hero or some super adaptable anime character. Hell, I wasn’t even fitting to be a background character.

So imagine my surprise when I encountered something that changed my life...and not for the better. I still live in fear to this day, always watching my back as I feel cold gazes tearing me to shreds.

I want to tell you this story so that you know that ignorance does not protect you. They will come for you whether you know of their existence or not. But hopefully my story might be able to help you. To guide you.

Well I guess it’s now or never. I don’t have much time left. Even now they are coming for me, waiting for the right moment to strike and tear me to shreds.

It all started on a cold and cloudy day as I was about to start walking home…

The day had been a typical one, filled with the monologue of the teachers and work. After the bell had rang, the students, as usual, poured out like a wave in the ocean.

I was one of those few students who walked home, considering that the majority of my school friends took the school bus home or had their parents pick them up.

Now, you have to understand that it was late in the year, mid October to be accurate. The days were getting shorter as dusk approached earlier and earlier.

For me, having to walk 30 minutes to get to my house, this meant that as I walked, it would get darker until I got home. Usually it wasn’t too bad considering that school was released at 4:05 every day. Generally I would arrive at my house just as the sky was getting a bit too dark to see.

Sometimes my parents would worry, especially after hearing the news about several people going missing these past couple of weeks.

But today was different from the rest. A disturbance in my typical routine you might say. Of course it was nothing good. I had failed a test the previous week and today was my last day to make it up.

It was a long test with difficult problems. I knew that I wouldn’t finish quickly. If you have ever been in a school after the students are released, then you know how large the contrast is. A lively, bustling place in the day turns into a desolate and eerie building with shadows in every corner at night.

Now, our school campus was fairly large with various multi-level buildings. I was one the 3rd floor of the main building, which was located at the front of the school. Not strange since most of my teachers were located on the floor as well.

I wasn’t too worried. I mean, my teacher was still here with me of course. But after about 30 minutes I was halfway through the test when something strange began to happen.

Knock……………..Knock…………...Knock………….Knock

Four knocks had rang out in the silent building. My teacher who was sitting at her desk, tilted her head as if trying to determine what it could possibly be. I just assumed it to be nothing more than one of the janitors that clean the school.

Going back to my work, it wasn’t even a minute until we were disturbed again.

Knock………..…...Knock………...Knock…....Knock

There it was. That knocking noise again. This time it was slightly louder, and the knocks came faster. As if they were getting closer.

Now that I think about it, the janitors should have left the building already so who could that be? I glanced toward my teacher just as she looked towards me. As our gazes met, I was shocked. My teacher was shaking. Almost imperceptible, but I noticed it along with the fine sheen of sweat on her forehead.

But what scared me the most was the fear in her eyes. I had previously felt comfort in the fact that my teacher was her with me. But now….now I realize that she is also a person as well. Someone who gets frightened.

“Miss...what’s wrong?” I hesitatingly asked her.

“Nothing,” she shakingly said, although it was obviously a lie. Determined to finish my test and get the hell out of here, I poured my focus onto my paper but it was not long until we were once again interrupted by those frightening knocks.

Knock……..Knock…..Knock..KNOCK!

I jumped. I screamed. At this point I was extremely scared. The knocking noise had seemed to be getting quicker and quicker and finally the last one was loud. Very loud! It sounded like it was right outside the classroom.

I could hardly breathe at this point. My chest was pounding and my insides were violently twisting at just the thought of what could be making those sounds.

“M-miss! What do you think is making those sounds?” I asked my teacher quietly, my eyes glued to the door in fright, as I was too afraid to speak loudly. I waited for a reply but the pause was too long. Looking over I saw my teacher hugging her knees while rocking back and forth with tears streaming down her face.

“No...no..no.no no no NO! Why me, why me? I did everything they told me to. I sacrificed those people! I even drank their blood!” She whispered this out with a gradually increasing volume before ending in a scream.

At this point I couldn’t even breathe. My breath had stuck in my throat long ago. I could feel my heart pounding like a jackhammer and the blood rushing through my head like a roaring river. I knew now who had been kidnapping people at night. But what pushed me over the edge into unbelievable horror is not that she kidnapped them, or even that she drank their blood.

She had said something about sacrifice. I knew what this meant of course. She had killed those people for someone else...no….for something else. And that something is probably what’s coming now. What’s right outside this classroom.
