Chapter 2: On the Streets

A curfew? What's going on?

The man was wearing what looked like an alteration of the police uniform - a black kaftan with four straps of white around the arms and two around the waist. His accent was strange.

"Look at me when I'm talking to you." The policeman, as Gaus decided to call him, said. Now that they were close enough, Gaus could see the typical mustache and the lack of beard of the traditional guardsmen. He also had a tired expression on his face, which, coupled with the blatant anger radiating from him, made him look older than he probably was.

"Sorry, I was..." Gaus stuttered, not really sure what to say.

He stared at him up and down. "Who are you?"

"No... one." Gaus answered.

The policeman rolled his eyes and, after a few seconds of silence stare, said,  "There's been a murder in this area last evening, did you know?" Apparently, it was a rhetorical question because he didn't wait for any response. "You might want to start talking before I drag you to the station."

"Look, I know nothing about any murder. I'm here by accident." Gaus said, trembling internally.

"Huh? You're here by accident?" He gave him a suspicious glare.

"I.. I... Look, I don't know how to tell you this, just leave me alone..." Gaus stuttered. Everything was just not normal. Under the normal circumstances, he should be on his way to milk Abul, the big cow of his neighbor, a former nomad who had decided to settle down in town two years ago.

"No, don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to explain yourself at the station. Tell me your name, kid."

"I'm.. Liyan, Liyan Carlos." He lied. He could be just paranoid but what if someone was looking for him?

"Carlos?"

Gaus nodded.

The policeman looked disappointed. Apparently, he was expecting some nobly surname.

"You have wasted my time. Let's go." He said, yanking his collar. Gaus was too slow to dodge and his raincoat paid the price. The policeman grabbed his neck instead and dragged him forward. He didn't think cuffing was necessary, giving the fragile nature of the suspect. Thanks to that, Gaus easily put his hands on the screw.

The world blurred and disappeared. When everything returned back to normal, Gaus was standing in the alley, facing the yellow wall again.

Now that he knew a policeman would appear in about... two minutes, he ran. Seconds later, he was out of the alley looking for a place to hide and collect his thoughts. The houses looked completely unfamiliar, made of stones and shining things. They all looked the same to him. Even the streets looked the same. This was not the village he grew up in. And the worst part was everyone had locked their doors. Nobody but the patrol was out. Gaus decided to just find a nice, secluded corner and wait for tomorrow.

That took him the next fifteen minutes. He was finally alone, hiding behind some kind of dustbin that was big enough to hide his entire body. It wasn't nice in any way but it was better than being behind a cell, that much he knew.

Time to take a closer look at this mystery watch.

There were two small windows at the lower left corner of the dial. One was showing time and date (probably today's date), and the other was blank. He tapped the date window.

03:00:53

Tuesday

6th April

Year 1851 AC

Huh? So tapping the windows did that.

He tapped the blank window. Unsurprisingly, four panels appeared.

"......"

"....."

Gaus opened his mouth repeatedly to talk to himself but he didn't know what to say, so he just remained silent and maintained a calm look despite his inner panic. Out of all the directions he had thought his life would take, none was this one. In truth, he didn't even know what direction that was, if any.

"You're completely surrounded. You have the right to remain silent."

Gaus jerked his head in the direction of the speaker. She was a big, sturdy woman with a mustache. A freaking mustache! She was accompanied by two policemen, both carrying unsheathed swords.

This was no time to remain speechless. "I did nothing wrong." He said.

"Remain still if you're so sure of that." The woman said with the same androgynous voice.

"Put your hands where I can see them." The other officer said, eyeing Gaus' empty hands. But he was a tad too late. Gaus' fingers were already on the crown.

"I'm warning you, DO NOT..."

Gaus turned the screw back.

He knew it wasn't safe to stay there, so he left into the city in the dead of night.
