Chapter 3: You are a wizard H*rry

Riding on Alistair's strong back, I felt a strange comfort despite my paralyzed legs. Around us, the mountains loomed like silent giants, their dark shadows sprawling across our snowy path. Alistair's boots crunched rhythmically in the snow as he shared fascinating insights about a powerful force in this world—something as common here as the Wi-Fi signals back on Earth.

"It's everywhere," said Alistair, his eyes twinkling with the thrill of sharing his secret. "In the air, the earth, the very heavens above us—and we can dance with it.”

Perched on his back, my curiosity piqued. "Dance? You mean, control some kind of magical power?”

He laughed warmly, the vibration comforting against the cold. "Well, the folks here call it the 'Essence.' Magic isn't entirely wrong, though. It's more real than you can imagine."

Rhythmic crunching of snow under Alistair's boots accompanied our journey, until an unexpected slip broke the cadence, nearly sending us sprawling into the snowdrifts. After he steadied us, I quipped, "Looks like even the Essence can't keep us on our feet, eh?"

Alistair's laugh rang clear and bright, dispelling the bite of the cold air. "The Essence isn't a crutch, Damian. Harnessing its power is more than sheer force—it's about balance, perception, and a touch of grace."

That got me thinking, a spark of interest flaring in me. "It's a kind of inner power, then? Something we can use to fight our battles?”

Alistair shot a knowing smile over his shoulder. "Exactly, Damian. But it's subtler than pure might. It's about a deep connection, deeper than bone.”

Alistair was patient as he talked about his own abilities. His large frame housed great power to channel the Essence, but his finesse was simple. He was strong but not subtle.

Finally, we arrived at a cozy cabin that promised warmth and rest. Alistair dove into a pile of old books, flipping through pages for precious details. It took hours, but he eventually found what he was looking for. "Understanding your ability is the start," he said firmly, closing a book with a thump that stirred the dust.

"How?" I asked, eager despite my physical limitations.

He stood, offered me a rough, strong hand, and pulled me up. "First, learn to listen," he said gently. "Then, to feel. The Essence is there, but it's quiet. You have to tune in to hear it."

If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

Outside in the snowy silence, Alistair instructed me to close my eyes. "Reach out with your mind—not your hands. The Essence is there, like the warmth of sunlight you feel but can't hold."

At first, all I felt was the biting cold. But slowly, a warmth sparked within me, unfamiliar and inviting.

"Do you feel it, Damian?" Alistair whispered amidst the hush of wind and night.

Hesitantly, I nodded. "I think I do."

"Encourage that warmth. Let it grow, but keep it in check," he guided me.

I immersed myself in this inner sensation, feeling the Essence burn like a controlled flame within me.

When I opened my eyes, the night was unchanged, but something had shifted within me. I now felt an energy that linked everything—the ground, the air, the sky.

"Remarkable," Alistair murmured as I drew a tiny flame towards me. "You're a natural conduit for the Essence."

I grinned, pride swelling. "Am I really that good?"

His smile was shadowed by concern. "Your talent is bright, but your vessel is small. Your capacity to channel the Essence is limited."

My enthusiasm waned. "So I have the skill, but not enough power to sustain it?"

Alistair nodded empathetically. "You might increase it with practice, but only so much."

Disappointment gnawed at me, yet I wasn't ready to give up. "Can the Essence heal my legs?" I grasped at hope.

He pondered. "True healing requires a master, and such skills are rare. They dwell in the capital, far from this modest cabin.”

"So, it would cost a fortune?" I said, sarcasm lacing my words.

"Yes, that's the way of the world," he agreed.

We both fell quiet, the only sound the popping of firewood. But inside me, determination burned brighter than any flame ever could.

Refusing to be defeated, I resolved, "I have this incredible power at my fingertips. Let's see where it takes us."

With the Essence's faint yet stubborn pulse within me, there was no surrender.
