Chapter 4: Identity Crisis

Chapter 4: Identity Crisis

Continuing where we left off, we are inside the Claire's coach and are currently traveling toward the adventures guild. This place, as I've been told, is supposedly going to help me attain an Identification Card

I turned to Claire with curiosity while traveling, "So, how important is an identification card here?"

"It plays a vital role," Claire explained, her voice filled with conviction. "An identification card allows the authorities to identify you in case of any criminal activity and also enables you to take on jobs, etc..."

I couldn't help but compare it to the identification system in my own world.

"The adventurer's guilds along with other establishment helps us create identification cards. We usually make them after a person reaches a certain age. Though there are some identification given to you after birth. But let's not get to that since you don't have that with you. But don't worry, we'll manage," Claire continued with a reassuring smile.

As Claire explained the reasons why we were heading to the Adventurers Guild, I listened closely, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt. She was going out of her way to help me, even with the guards following her coach. Suddenly, I couldn't help but feel like I was being a burden to her.

"By the way, if there are other establishments that make identification cards, why did you choose the Adventurers Guild?" I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me.

"So you can also get an Adventurers card," she replied with a smile. "It'd be easier for us to attain those two things if we just request them in the same place. And besides, I have a friend there who can help us."

I couldn't help but feel touched by her kindness, and vowed not to dishonor her efforts.

"We are here, your highness," the guard outside said, opening the door for us.

As we stepped out of the coach, I took a glance at the Adventurers Guild and saw a bustling crowd of people. We went inside and were greeted by the sights and sounds of the guild. I couldn't help but feel somewhat surprised by the various species that I saw for the first time, roaming around the guild.

I tugged at Claire's sleeves, my eyes wide with surprise and curiosity. "I thought humans were the only ones who lived here? What are these creatures?" I asked, pointing to the various species roaming around the guild.

Claire looked at me with a hint of amusement, as if she was trying to hold back laughter. "They are demi-humans," she explained. "Once part of the animal kingdom, but they have evolved into human-like species. They're special and incredibly strong, so be respectful and don't mess around with them."

I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and caution, especially coming from a person who had faced a ton of orcs.

Just then, we heard a voice calling out Claire's name.

"Claire! Claire!" The voice echoed through the guild, making me and Claire turn our heads frantically, trying to find the source. After scanning the area, we saw a girl with green short hair standing behind the counter.

"Ahh, finally found you," Claire exclaimed as she walked closer to the girl. They hugged each other tightly and I could see the genuine smile on Claire's face. It was clear that this girl was a friend of hers.

As Claire and her friend chatted, I noticed that they kept stealing glances at me, probably discussing how to help me get an identification card. After their conversation, they walked towards me.

"H-hi there, My name is G-grace," the girl stuttered, her voice timid. I couldn't help but notice her cuteness, as she looked at me with a shy smile.

"I'm the person who issues Adventurer's card. But for us to get a card, we need to first get your identity or identification card. Miss Claire already gave me the gist of the situation you're in. I'll have to talk to the manager about this and hopefully, he'll help you with your issue. You did save the Princess after all," Grace said, her voice filled with determination.

As she went upstairs to talk to the manager, I couldn't help but be impressed by her despite her timid nature. She was clearly doing her job well and I had faith in her abilities. After a few minutes of waiting, she finally came down the stairs with a smile on her face.

"Good news! You will have an Adventurers card today," Grace said, her face lighting up with excitement. "But for the identification card, I'm afraid it will take weeks to get it, will that be ok?" She asked, turning to us with a cute and timid smile.

Claire looked at me, "Is that okay with you?"

I hesitated for a moment, "Yeah, that'll be fine. But how will I get a job without the identification card?" I asked, a hint of concern creeping into my voice.

"Y-you'll be fine," Grace reassured me with a cute and timid voice, taking a deep breath. "An adventurer's card is a type of identification. Though identification cards are more important since it's proof of who you are and some other important information. With the adventurer's card, you'll be fine. Since you can't get an adventurer's card without an identification, people will automatically assume that you already have an identification card."

I couldn't help but be impressed by her cuteness and her way of explaining things in a cute and timid way. It was clear that she was extremely knowledgeable and confident in her work.

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"So if I can get my Adventurers card today, how will I get a job?" I asked Grace, my curiosity getting the better of me.

"You can get a job by finding it on that board over there," she answered, pointing towards a board with posters on it.

"You take a poster from that board or quest board and register it at the counter. After finishing the requirements of the quest, adventurers come back here and confirm the success of the quest on the counter with proof, like items or a written report," Grace explained, her voice serious and precise.

"So what kind of jobs am I getting?" I asked, my interest piqued.

"It depends on the rank that an adventurer has," she replied with a smile. "But before we continue, will you fill out this paper for me so I can make the adventurer's card for you?" she handed me a form.

We took a seat in the corner of the guild and I gave her the information needed to get an identification and adventurer's card. I wrote everything on the paper. I was still oblivious on how I can read these letters though. It's not the same as ours back home. It's probably because of my ability. If you're asking how'd I get my birth date, I just made my birthday the same day and year as Claire's.

"T-thank you for the information," Grace said stuttering again, "I will process the adventurer card for you now"

She went behind the counter and went inside a room. I thought it would take long, but it was actually pretty fast. She then came back and called me. I got up and walked towards the counter.

"I-I'm sorry... I forgot... I s-still need to get your rank" she said, looking embarrassed as if she thinks she messed up. "I'm so sorry... This is embarrassing."

I couldn't help but find her cuteness when she got embarrassed.

"You don't have to apologize," I reassured her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder and giving her a warm smile. "You're helping me so much, in fact, I should be the one apologizing. I didn't even think to ask about getting a rank," I admitted, feeling guilty for not being more proactive.

"Are you sure?" She asked, her eyes filled with uncertainty and vulnerability.

I couldn't help but think how charming she was, even as she apologized. Her timid and endearing demeanor was making it hard for me to resist, and I couldn't help but think that she was becoming more alluring as time passed by.

"Y-yeah you don't need to apologize. Let's just get on with it," I said, trying to shake off the feeling of embarrassment and compose myself.

As I looked away, flustered, I could feel a sudden coldness. I turned around to see Claire staring at me with a stern expression, as if I had committed a heinous crime.

Grace reached down and got an orb. She then placed the orb on the counter.

"Alright, for this to work you need to place your hand on the Power sphere. With this, we can identify your rank easily depending on the brightness of the orb," Grace explained, her voice steady and confident.

"Let us begin," She said with a nod. she took my hand and guided it to the orb.

As she touched my hand, I couldn't help but feel flustered. I looked at her and saw that she too seemed to be feeling the same way. Claire, who had been standing nearby, suddenly got up and walked towards us, seemingly annoyed.

Without any warning, she took my hand and slapped it onto the orb, as if she was in a hurry to finish this process.

"Ouch!" I exclaimed, pulling my hand back in pain.

"Does it hurt?" Claire asked, looking at me with a hint of satisfaction in her eyes. I nodded, rubbing my hand. "Good!" she said with a smirk.

I couldn't help but wonder what her problem was. As I stared at the orb, my thoughts began to wander. Maybe I'll be ranked as the highest in this guild. I could be the strongest in this guild and no one will hold a candle against me. I started to daydream about all the women here being astonished by my greatness. If someone could read my thoughts it would be embarrassing.

"Whoa!" Claire and graces exclaimed

"So how's my rank? How strong am I?" I asked confidently, a hint of excitement in my voice.

"The Power sphere cracked!" Grace said, a look of concern on her face.

I puffed out my chest with confidence, thinking it was probably because of my uncontainable power. "Revenant, if you can hear me, thank you!" I thought to myself.

"The sphere cracked but didn't show any signs of illumination," Grace said, her tone filled with disappointment. "I'm sorry but without illumination, you're gonna be in the 6th set," she added.

"What's that?" I asked, confused.

Claire put her hand on my shoulder, shaking her head and sighing in disappointment. "Tsk tsk tsk... After going through a lot by saving me, you're ranked as a 6th set, I can't believe it" she said mockingly with a smirk on her face.

"Why do you look like that and sarcastic? It's a high rank, right? Right?" I said, trying to convince myself that it's a high rank. I looked at Grace with sad eyes, hoping she would tell me that this was a good thing.

"Ahem... I'm s-sorry Aaron, but th-this is the rule. You will be ranked as a 6th set. But it's our first time encountering a sphere of power cracking. So that must be something right?" she said, trying to put a positive spin on the situation.

"Fine..." I replied, feeling disappointed in myself.

"But what are sets anyway?" I asked, still confused about the ranking system.

Grace reached down and took a piece of paper. She then wrote down the rank numberings, explaining each sets.

"Each person who has ranks are part of a set. There are 7 sets, meaning 7 ranks. The 6th set is the lowest rank. You can get quests with the difficulty of 6th set and 5th set. 6th set will be the most comfortable while 5th set will be your highest difficulty. You can climb the sets depending on the quality of the work you put into your quest or if your power is above your current rank. The sets are comprised of 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, and lastly the 0 Set. Are there any more questions?" Grace explained, her work mode evident in her professional tone.

I couldn't help but notice how she changed her whole identity when she's in work mode, it's like she's a different person.

"Thanks for the information, Grace. I will do my best as a 6th ranker," I said, trying to put on a brave face despite my disappointment.

I couldn't really complain, as she had helped me a lot.

Claire and I walked towards the quest board and viewed the quests there, but my mind was still preoccupied with my low rank. I couldn't help but feel a sense of disappointment and frustration, but I knew I had to push through it and work hard to improve my rank.

The poster had two available quests for 6th sets. One was to find a missing dog and one was to pick herbs. I couldn't help but feel disappointed, as these quests felt like simple errands rather than actual adventures. I let out a sigh, feeling frustrated and unfulfilled.

"Why don't you pick this one?" Claire said, yanking out a poster from the board. "Grace did say that you can get quests for 5th set and it says here that it's harvesting slime cores. It won't be hard but at least you'll fight," she added.

"Stop patronizing me, I'm already down as is," I told Claire, feeling depressed.

"But you're right, I can't grow if I don't start from the beginning, right? I'll take the slime quest and do a great job and become a 5th set," I told Claire, trying to stay positive and determined to improve my rank.

I took the poster from Claire with a sense of determination, and walked over to Grace. "I'm taking this Quest!" I announced confidently.

"S-sure, but do you have weapons with you?" Grace asked in a concerned tone.

My heart sank as I realized I didn't have any weapons. I turned to Claire with pleading eyes. "Just a small sword please??" I begged.

Claire looked at me with a mix of annoyance and amusement. "Hmmm... What am I going to do with you" she said with a sigh.

After a couple of hours, Claire and I went to the weapons shop just in front of the guild. She bought me a sword and some leather armor. With my new gear in tow, I returned to the guild with a renewed sense of confidence. I marched up to the counter and slammed the poster onto it, catching Grace off guard.

"I'll take this quest!" I exclaimed, my determination clear in my voice.

Happily, Grace smiled and eagerly accepted. I then stepped outside and turned to Claire, inquiring about where to find some slimes.

"Slimes are typically found in forests. There's a forest just outside of Aurora, you might find some there," Claire replied with a smile.

"Thank you so much, Claire. I couldn't have done this without your help. I really appreciate your support," I expressed gratefully.

Claire blushed, a hint of fluster in her voice as she replied, "Just come back and see me, then we'll be even."

"Of course, my princess," I playfully replied as I walked away and waved my hand, signaling my departure on my quest.
