Obsidian Core has to end. I started running into the same troubles that I had when I initially stopped writing it, so I started diving into other Dungeon Core novels to find what I liked, what I didn't, and if there was something I was missing.
Turns out, there was. There's no GROWTH in Obsidian Core. Sure, Sybas can expand and evolve his creatures, but that's it. I purposely didn't put an overall system in the world, I thought it would make it different and maybe more interesting to read and write. But it also crippled the story. I can't keep recurring characters if they don't grow, and Sybas grows too quick for anything else to keep up with. I think I'm already bumping up against this problem, and in ten or so chapters I would start having to work around it actively, and in twenty I would just be flat out denying it exists.
While a dungeon expanding on it's own is the core of the genre, it also gets boring fast. I also didn't put in a good enough system for him to gain new monsters and flora. There are a lot of little problems, that together make it untenable.
I do know a surprisingly number of people liked Obsidian Core, and I do too. Frankly, I think it's great, especially for my first big attempt at writing both in general and in the genre. But it's smarter and better to accept the flaws and try to do better in the future, than to try and force it.
Fortunately for you all, (I hope), I do like the dungeon-core genre and plan to try again, hopefully better and with a more clear understanding of what I'm doing and need to do. So I will be writing a new Dungeon Core story, in the future. I still need to work out it's system, and other kinks, probably plot a lot of it to make sure it works, but I do plan on doing it.
I still need to work out a lot of what I'll be doing, the system, the creatures, any specialization, characters, all that. But When I do start writing again, I plan to have ironed out as many kinks and flaws as possible, and hope to go further than Obsidian Core did.
I will post a chapter on this story when I start writing the new story, in case that helps people who want to try it too.
Thank you for all your time reading, commenting, critiquing, and so much more. Obsidian Core was a better first story than I could have imagined, and that's because of all of you. I can only hope my next attempt in the genre, is good enough to pay it all back.
Thank you so much.
