Alex pushed against the heavy window frame in an attempt to dislodge it from years of dirt and grime that seemed to be acting as a very effective glue to keep the window closed. Most of the windows in the dorms at this orphanage were barred or completely boarded up but not this one. Alex was in a room that attached to the attic space above the girls dormitory. She had to stand on top of her bunkbed just to touch the decades old mushy ceiling tiles which were disturbingly black and wet in some places. Realizing she wasn't tall enough to actually grab anything sturdy enough to pull herself up, she decided on the precarious task of standing on the metal piped headboard for the bed. On wobbly legs she stepped up, leaned against the cold stone wall for support and managed to grab the top of the wall beyond the ceiling tile. Alex pulled herself up with everything she had and after struggling embarrassingly for a few moments, she manage to get herself into the space above.
After exploring the dingy room she found herself in for a while, she felt her way through the darkness to a door that was slightly illuminated around the edges. She knew there was at least a crawlspace or attic above the dorm as two dormer windows could be seen from the courtyard. Alex tested the old doors knob and it opened surprisingly smoothly. The door opened to another attic space with what she had been searching for, windows. Windows with no bars to keep bad children from sneaking out to play in the night or worse, escape. She rushed a quietly as possible to the windows that no one had probably looked out of since their installation and began her work.

Creek! Swoosh!
The window finally gave way and slid upward, making far more noise than Alex had hoped. Cold wind blew in, sending Alex's hair into a swirling mess and obscuring her vision. She managed to rangle her dark black main into submission and took a look out into the brightly lit night. The moon was nearly full and shining down on Alex, welcoming her to join it in freedom. She had had enough of being treated like she was crazy. This place was worse than all the others, excluding that one place she tried very hard not to remember. The so-called teachers at this orphanage did not teach the children anything but to do chores. Alex was quite sure there wasn't a proper math book in the entire place. Most of the children couldn't count to one-hundred, let alone do basic math. The place was a spot to dump children no one wanted or cared for in any aspect.
So tonight, Alex would make her escape and travel the world with nothing but her own two feet to guide her. Her feet and the others feet as well obviously. There wasn't anywhere her feet could take her that could help her escape them.
