The Misadventures of Jason Lienholt

Prologue- That Time Jason Read Before Bed

Jason put down the book. It was getting late. He glanced at the clock, 'Seriously!? It's 3am? Crap!'

He had work the next day, and his penchent for getting lost in books was problematic. Getting lost in books had already caused him to miss at least eight hours of sleep that week alone. He sighed at his own rediculousness.

That said, the novel he was reading was the second book in the trilogy, and frankly it was riveting. Terry sure knew how to write a novel. The details and new world had unfolded in his mind over the prior hours that he had spent. He practically could feel the main character’s struggle and confusion as he dealt with the plot.

His kids and wife went to bed at 8pm and 10pm respectively, leaving plenty of time for Jason to get lost in a fantasy world. It was a wild sensation to get lost in a different place than his world.

Don’t misunderstand, Jason loved his family, his life, his job, his faith, and essentially everything that he encountered on a daily basis. He just craved adventure. He craved it like people needed air, or a fish needed water. In a world that had been practically explored to its corners, filled with science that was significantly advanced, there was only a few paths to the unknown that still existed: the bottoms of the oceans, the vast emptiness of space, and the limitless bounds of the human imagination.

As he closed his eyes to drift off to sleep, he remembered the design project he was currently working on. Jason was an Instructional Designer for a local university department. The department trained individuals on advanced driving techniques. Their primary avenues of revenue were first-responders, police, firemen, EMTs, and commercial drivers. It was a unique challenge to create e-learning materials for subject matter with such a material application. That said, it was also highly rewarding. His materials could help save lives, and that was heartwarming. Besides, he occasionally got to go drive the numerous squad cars, firetrucks, ambulances, and SUVs owned by the department. It admittedly was a dream job that ten-year-old Jason had longed to do. Not many people had those opportunities, especially when their actual training hadn’t targeted them towards any of the aforementioned careers!

He smiled. Another day of work was coming. It was going to be pretty fun.

He thought again of the novel he was reading. That was fun too, if only there was a way to incorporate his adventures at work with his passion for reading and writing. With that, he fell asleep.
