Chapter 47 - Hangs Block

While Melch was thinking about this, he overheard one of the students say that this assistant professor had created a report on several topics in more detail. They mentioned that the report would be available once it was released. That’s when Melch realized that the entire purpose of this class was to introduce some common or basic things to get students interested in checking out his report.

Both Leif and Melch started thinking about where one would get that report and how they could obtain it. That's when they overheard that the report would only be available at a place next to the library. It didn’t have any name associated with it but students referred to it as the “Hangs Block.”

The latest reports and research papers released by professors, assistant professors or even top ranking students would be pinned there. However, the number of copies available was limited. Getting their hands on one before the senior students would be a challenge. If they couldn’t get it from the Hangs Block, they would have to wait for the reports to be officially stored in the library, which could take anywhere from six months to two years.

Inspired by the assistant professor's lecture, some of the students had already planned to rush there hoping to get a copy. When Leif and Melch saw this, they decided to go check it out too. When they reached the front seats, they saw Edwin and sat next to him. Edwin raised an eyebrow and asked "Where were you guys during the class?"?

Leif grinned. "We have been here all along, only sitting in the back. Hey man, I have several doubts. Do professors also go to the Hangs Block?"

Edwin shook his head. “No, they don’t need to. Most of the reports are submitted to all the professors beforehand, so they get their copies separately. There’s even a dedicated division that handles all of this.”

Leif looked intrigued. "That makes sense but still, it sounds kind of fun to go there. Like a treasure hunt."

Melch sat in silence, absorbing the information. He was curious to see what kind of reports were stored there and if any of them would be relevant to his own research.

They decided to head straight to the Hangs Block but Leif suddenly said "Let's eat first and then go. This sounds like something that's going to take time and I don't want to do it on an empty stomach."

Edwin sighed. "You'll regret the choice, that you are making now very soon"

Despite Edwin’s warning, they made their way to the academy’s dining hall and had an extravagant meal. Several meat-based dishes were available and Leif piled his plate high. On the other hand, Melch ate a moderate amount, his mind still focused on the reports.

Once they finished eating, they headed towards the Hangs Block. The building wasn’t exactly next to the library. The academy’s library was built in a strange structure with gaps in its design that created hidden pathways and alleyways. Behind the library, through a narrow and slightly concealed pathway was the Hangs Block.

"The place is actually well hidden" Leif muttered. "And they didn't even use magic to do it. They just made it hard to find."

Despite the isolated location, the place was full of people. Many students pushed forward as they all tried to get inside. The entrance itself was also a single doorway, which in itself made it rather cumbersome to pass through. As Melch and others approached at that time, it became difficult to move any further.

"There's too much crowd here" Edwin said. "We should have come early."

Leif attempted to push forward but was quickly shoved back by the sheer mass of students trying to do the same. “Alright, new plan” he said. “We wait for the crowd to settle.”

Melch glanced at the crowd and quickly assessed the situation. The chances of them making it inside anytime soon were slim. He turned to Edwin. “How long does this kind of rush usually last?”

Edwin shrugged. "Depends. If the report is highly anticipated, it could take a while before the place clears up. If it's just something minor, students will lose interest fast."

"So, how do we know if this is one of those highly anticipated reports?" Leif asked.

Edwin smirked. "We don't. We either wait it out or try again later."

Melch watched as the students surged forward toward the entrance. Most of them were second and third-year students, so whatever was in there was probably worth something. If it was just a minor report, then the first-year students would mob the place instead. That was useful to know.

"There's got to be a better way" Melch said.

Leif's eyes sparkled. "You think what I'm thinking?"

“If you’re thinking of sneaking in from another entrance” Melch said “then yes.”

Leif grinned. “Exactly.”

Edwin sighed. “You two are going to get in trouble.”

Ignoring Edwin’s warning, Melch and Leif moved away from the main crowd and started looking for alternative ways in. Since the structure of the Hangs Block wasn’t well-known to first-years, they had no idea if there were other entrances. But Melch remembered that there was a library back door on the alley near the Hangs Block. In case they found the entrance via the backdoor, maybe the side pass there would be helpful in leading into the inside area.

"We must check the building's back portion" Melch said.

He nodded and both of them began moving through the alley in relative silence. Edwin paused for just a moment but then followed along, shaking his head. "If we get caught, I'm blaming you both."

They moved cautiously, not wanting to draw attention to themselves. The alley behind the library was lined with old stone walls and had a few storage areas for books and supplies. As they walked along the narrow path, they noticed a small side door that looked like it hadn't been used in a while.

"This could be it" Leif whispered.

Melch approached the door and examined it closely. There was no visible lock but the handle seemed stuck. He tried pushing it gently but it wouldn’t budge.

Edwin sighed. “Well, that’s the end of that plan.”

However, Leif had other ideas. He grabbed a small piece of metal from his pocket, likely something he had picked up earlier and started working on the door. “I’ve got this.”

Melch watched as Leif fiddled with the handle. After a few moments, there was a slight creak and the door finally gave way. It opened into a dimly lit corridor, which seemed to be part of the Hangs Block.

“We’re in” Leif whispered excitedly.

Melch stepped inside followed by Edwin, who still looked skeptical. The corridor led directly to a set of shelves filled with old documents and reports. In fact, they look as if they would have directly walked out from some storage area rather than the main section showing newer reports.

"This place is old" Edwin muttered.

Melch did not bother to comment on this and started looking through the shelves. "We need to find the latest reports" he said.

Leif nodded. "Then let's not waste any more time."

With that, they began rummaging through papers, looking for anything useful before anyone realized they had slipped in.
